Title: cap protectors for Sachs cranks and countershaft
Post by: john durrill on March 27, 2004, 12:41:37 AM
Fellow POG'ers
How may would like the protective end caps for pulling the main bearing inner races and removeing the mag flywheel and counter shaft sprocket?
We are in the process of making up some ( Mark , Rod i have two made up now for you and want to send you the small one also . Thats the reason for the delay)
The cost would be nominal. We need to buy an 10 mm end mill to do the small caps, so $5.00 would cover each cap either the large or small one , plus shipping.
Let me know and we will make a run of them up.
Doug Wilford was kind enough to loan me the large one to get the measurements right on it. I am waiting on the Herc folks in Germany to answer an e-mail with the measurements on the small one befor we start on them.

Ron can you measure the OD of the small cap and the overall length?
Leo sent me a note he is looking but is 99% sure he does not have a small one.
Thank You,
John D.

If need be I can send you diameters from the puller on Monday or Tuesday.

John,
Sounds easy, but see if this makes sense.
1.  The OD that is closest to the flywheel is 12mm.
2.  The ID for same is 10.7mm.
3.  OD for the big end that the puller rides in is 14mm.
4.  Length is 9.5mm.

Mine as you can imagine is well used.  If you need mine or anything else let me know.
Respectfully,

Ron Carbaugh

Ron,
If i understand you correctly the od is stepped or tapered from
12 to 14 mm?
We turned down a shaft tonight to make the small end cap. the od we picked is .554. the id of the hole we will bore is .4062(13/32).
We can do a step if its necessary. I just cant remember a step on the one we had back when we owned the shop. The closed end has to be thick enough not to distort that is very important and at 90 degs to the crank end. What do you think? we can turn ones like you have  it will just take a bit more time.
If you think it will need the step , yes please send me your old one and we can make exact copies.
I know that there are many different mag pullers ( dimentions and makes) floating around . I can use the crank nut flush with the crank end and pull my mag or remove the inner race, but i know others can not with the mag pullers they have.
We would like to have them as close to the orignals as we can make them.

John,
After some thought and looking at the cap I have I realized mine started out with the same OD, but has become been compressed from many years of use.  So use the ID & OD that I gave you for the flywheel end for the model.  The end for the puller is tapered on the inside to help center the puller.  That way if someone has the puller with a taper end it will fit or a flat end it will fit.  John if you need to look at the cap just say so and it and I will send it.

Ron Carbaugh

Ron,
We can make them from the specs you posted then.
thank you for doing the home work for us.
This will save many cranks and countershafts if they are used by the members. I know  a lot of crank rebuilders have a very hard time if the crank ends are damaged truing the crank up. For now ( unless someone makes up a run of the countershafts) they are getting hard to find in good shape and crank halves are very hard to find in good shape.
We are useing Grade 8 bolts to make the end caps with so they will hold up as well as the orignals.

John,
Sounds like you have a excellent plan.  I have seen the result of people having nice engines with crankends just destroyed.  Thank you as always for your commitment in helping others.
Just a side bar do you remember the race (hare scrambles) that use to be in Bainbridge (Ga) every year?  I believe it was called The Water Melon 100.

John,
I'll go in for a set. Seems I might need them for my Six Day project. I can't remember if I used a socket over them when I tore down the Berkshire 30 yrs ago!  Have you heard anything from Martin about the primary gears? Not that I'm close to testing, though.

John,
My check will be in the mail today.  I have e-mailed my address directly to you (I didn't want Karl to know my address).  Thanks John for once again sharing your time and effort to the Penton Owners.

All Owners of Sachs engined Pentons.
The caps we are discussing on this entry are to me basic tools(along with a flywheel puller) for maintaining a Penton bike equipped with a Sachs engine.

Mike,
We will do another run later . It takes about 2 hours to make 1 of the small caps up from start to finish. A lot of turning and several different operation. We only have a little Smithy 1220 lathe, mill set up and are not machinist by any stretch of the imagination Will get some stock ready, cut into sections and next time I have a weekend free will do another run. Any one else that needs them let me know we will try and do enough for all that ask.

Ron,
The last of the caps should leave in the morning by USPO. The boxes are hand made and small chuckle chuckle! So if you have a normal size mail box you should see them soon. Try the small caps out as soon as you can and let me know how you like them.

John,
I got mine last week and had put the flywheel back on to see how they worked. The small one fits perfectly on the crank and inside the puller also. I haven't put my hands on the puller for the countershaft sprocket yet, but I'm sure it will be just fine. Cudos on your work. Thanks again.

John,
We have a problem Houston.  I took the Brand New caps over to The Hobby Place where some of the finest MX/Enduro bikes are hidden.  I arrived with two sets and left with one set.  Those are some big boys and they just gave me no choice.  Good news is the are great and Richard Sanders and Capt.Don Schlutz are happy with their new tools.  Thanks John it was a pleasure to help out two of my best friends.
