Title: Penton Owners...a funny bunch
Post by: nwwr100cs on July 25, 2004, 03:06:19 PM
Penton owners keep "rehashing" how rare and collectible the bikes are but when it comes time to buy one they won't "ante" up to what they have previously told you they were worth.  What's up?  I guess they want you to "give" it away. Any response?

Yes, I will respond.  Since I don't know your name(you didn't sign your post)you will know mine because I sign all of my posts.
I purchased two Pentons in the last two weeks and spent $4500.00.  Doesn't sound like any give aways to me.  I will give you the benefit of the doubt since I don't know what Penton you were trying to sell, but something is only worth what someone wants to pay.
You can make posts like you did because it is a free country, but please don't get personal when you indicate that Pentons aren't collectable.  And, I will add that I paid $50.00 for a Penton in the last year because guess what........that's what the person was asking for it!

Hey Ron,
I think this person is in Central Texas and has a Jackpiner for sale. He has pasted it in Novermber (you responded to his post) then, he posted again in January and again in June. Now here is the 4th posting. Don't know anything about it other than it is in Texas and is in MX trim with fresh tires and new progressive shocks. Cerianis rebuilt. He doesn't say what year it is or how much, but that it has multi position shock mounts and that he is not giving it away.

Ron-I personally didn't mean to offend you...did I mention your name in the post? So don't take it so personal, BTW all I said was Penton owners were a funny bunch, that is my opinion! I have tried to sell a Jackpiner MX on this website 3 times for a reasonable price(I think) and have been haggled with on more occasions than I care to mention.  Maybe I chose the wrong forum but correct me if this is not a forum about Pentons for Pentons.  My "e"-mail address is attached so why must I give you my personal identity-that's my privelege if I chose not to do so. Did I step on your toes?

I don't want to stir trouble but all in all I have not had the best luck selling bikes on the POG site either.  eBay and word of mouth seem to get the most money for me.  Some POG members are very informed and are not in a hurry to find what they want and newer or non-POG members have tended to ante up more $$ for parts and bikes in my opinion.  Because I have been around POG a long time and know many of you guys I TRUELY mean no offense I just kind of agree to a certain extent with this guy.  Even in real life family and friends are rarely the highest bidders nor do we generally wish them to be.  There are of course exceptions to all generalities.  Now don't everyone get mad at me.

nwwr100cs,
OK, here is my take before my Mother makes me go to bed.  I actually called you on the bike when I believe it was on e-bay, or you sent me a picture from the Penton For Sale post.  The Jackpiner (if my memory serves me right) was a basic MX model with a green Six Day enduro tank.  When I called you I think the price was $800.00?? and you or who ever I was talking to told me that two other people were interested and if I wanted to see it the bike was located at a business in New Braunfels(TX).  I passed on the bike, but did tell one or two people about it.  End of that part.
I did however purchase a Jackpiner from a friend in Katy(TX) for $1600.00, but it was original with a full enduro kit from the factory.
You stated that you were haggled on different occations.  If you post something on this web site anyone can read and respond to your ad.  We could close up our site so only Penton Owner Group members had access, but choose to operate under a free society menu.  To call us "Funny Bunch" is I think disrespectful and as stated on a previous post please put your bike on ebay and let the market determine the price.  And that is my privilege to say what I have just said.
Finally, I would be happy to come by and look at your bike in good faith and tell you or any person interested in purchasing your bike my thoughts.  I am not an expert, but feel since you have been unsuccessful at selling the bike another opinion can't hurt.
Respectfully,

Ron Carbaugh

I looked back..all the way to November and looked at all three of the guys post..and theres no mention of price..why not? I always try and put a price even if it's to high, at least then you don't have for the most part people calling or emailing you with crazy offers..by the way how much do you want it & do you have any pics?
you may want to try eBay I've bought & sold quite a bit there for more than I thought I'd get..but coming on a forum and calling names surely won't help you sell it there..just my thoughts..maicobuddy[8D]

I'll jump on the bandwagon here and say that I agree with Ron. It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I went to Mid-Ohio this year and met some great people, and if they are "a funny bunch", then I'm a part of "the funny bunch" also. They have such a love for these bikes, that they will look for the most perfect example to aquire, whether to keep as original, or to make a museum masterpiece. I also agree with Larry; you don't really want to sell to family or friends, because you know in your heart you can get more from outside the circle. I recently aquired a Six Day from an old friend that needed some significant work, and he wanted more than I thought it was worth. Our mutual love for the marque let me take this bike home to get the work and respect that he knew I would give it. All in all, it boils down to the old addage: "One man's trash is another man's treasure"

Blue Dog and others...

WOW! is that a record price for a Jackpiner?  The only other question I have is how "original" is the bike?  It looks like an awesome example of originality, but when it comes to ebay I always wonder how much of it is "restored"?

OK-so everyone has a "bent"on this..I still don't understand why a running Jackpiner with fresh fork rebuild, new shocks, new tires, new chain, new cables in good running condition won't sell for more than $800.00.  As for the so called Six Day tank if you gentlemen strip the blue paint off your Jackpiners you'll find green gel coat underneath.  That doesn't make it unoriginal, maybe I should paint it blue again so it will seem original?  As far as the "funny" goes
how do so many who ride a non common bike made for a few years get the impression that funny is a blasphemy?  No insult intended but I assume some was taken.

nwwr100cs.
You are mistaken about the Jackpiner tanks. Orignial Jackpiner tanks were all blue gel coat. Not painted blue over green. If you have a blue tank with green under it, guess what. That's a Six Day Tank.

If you try to strip the blue off of a real 'Piner, you won't find 'Jack......it will be blue, through and through......now you're funny too. [:o)] :D

Hate to burst the bubble boys but some Jackpiners and Harescramblers tanks and airboxes were another color underneath because there were extras that were used.  Just another example of being efficient and useing what was available at the moment.

Larry is right, and that was true even on the steel tanks.  But, I guess I fell into nwwr100cs's trap and I am part of the "funny bunch" because I like Rob's reply.  I hope Mr. NWWR100CS finds his way to ebay and sells his bike and that it makes his life a lot happier.
I'm on my way to strip the NOS Jackpiner tank I bought from Larry some time back.  Wish me luck, or Rob was right when it comes to "real 'Piner tanks".  We'll see[:o)].

Re: Donny-this is where the "funny" comes in.  What is a fuel tank...a vessel to hold fuel-correct?  If the tank is the same size, shape and is proper then why would that constitute a "non" original and lessen the value.  Other posts have stated that some of the tanks of that year have a different gel coat, so........now YOU funny too!:D Responses welcome-I have band aids for feet that get stepped on.

Never said you were funny. I did read Larry's post about the tanks being painted over. I perssonally have NEVER seen that, but Larry has seen more Pentons than I have. I have only encountered about 20 Jackpiners that have passed through my hands, and I must say that all 20 were blue gel coat, not painted over. I do know that they did paint some of the early Steel Tanks, but have never seen a fiberglass tank painted over that was stock. Doesn't mean there weren't any, just I've never seen them. Send that band aid. [8D]

My two cents:
nwwr100cs is probably right when he sees Pentons selling for higher prices elsewhere. The people on this site who know these bikes well and have an understanding of what it takes to make them right(both monetarily and time-wise) will probably balk at paying top-dollar for a bike that the purists among us would view as only half-done. Most of us have found out the hard way that if the first 90% of the project take 90% of your cash, the final 10% of the project usually requires an additional 90% of your cash!

Also, I don't think the 'Piner commands quite the price as a comparable 125cc, 250cc or 400cc, as in most vintage motocross clubs there is no class for them to race.

Finally, if someone were looking for just a good 'rider' nwwr100cs's bike would probably be priced about right. Most folks here are generally looking for 'parts doaner' bikes to finish other projects or a fully restored bike for their collections.

OK, sermon over.

I think that POGGERS might have a better handle on what the relative value is on Pentons. In the last 2 months I have obtained a 125 for $3,000 a 100 Berkie for $8,000  both from the same POG member,  and a JP for $800. The 100 is a showroom piece, the 6 day is cherry and the JP is a racer, complete and ready to ride. All have different intrinsic values. The only bike I think I might have overpaid for is the JP. I think maybe "funny" wasnt the word you were looking for. Possibly it was "informed"

No-it was "funny" as previously stated. The heated debate here proves that![:I] Some have overpaid and some have underpaid but the ability to debate over a motorcycle whose production numbers were small yet cherished to the point that folks get "heated" up over a common descriptive is definately "funny"!

No disrespect intended....most people in the US are what I call "asleep" or so called "sheeple", willing to be told what to do and led around by more dominant people.  When I say "funny" I mean left of center which in my opinion is a good thing, I tend to be that way myself, again, with the many makes and marques(Japanese, etc.)of motorcycles to ride/race only a few have the balls to ride a lesser known marque in vintage racing.
