Title: Alloy Tank Year?
Post by: vmx1963 on August 13, 2004, 06:29:20 AM
G'day all, can someone tell me what year frames these alloy tanks fit?  I suspect it's the pre high-breather models around 72.

VMX,
I would have to see the measurements where the back bone of the frame where the tank fits over.  All of my tanks that do fit the 1972 CMF do not have the lower section as this tank has.  Lower section = the strip of aluminum that goes back to front on the sides.  I have seen these tanks on Pentons (1972 Six Day), but I didn't look at the fit.  Hope that  helps

Alan, I cannot answer your question, but I would like to comment that the image you provided is a cool photo.  I especially love the dog peering around from behind you.  Classic.  TED

Ron is 100% correct. I think the tanks came in two versions, one for the 72 and early 73 (non high breather) and the other for the high breather frame. The difference is the width of the opening at the back side of the tank underneath.

Thanks for the responses fellas.  Ted, as much as I like taking credit for other people's work (I am a manager after all), the photo isn't mine.  It's on eBay at present if anyone is wanting a nice alloy tank.  I just picked up a similar one on eBay and am waiting for it to arrive.

VMX,

I agree with Ron and Donny, although I've seen identical tanks both with and without the aluminum strip along the bottom.  I seem to recall most of the thin, rounded tanks, like the one you have pictured, being for the non high-breather frames. The real test is the shape of the tunnel.  The '72 non high-breather version will have a rounded tunnel, while the '73 and newer high-breather version will have a flatter, wider tunnel, especially at the rear.

Take care,
Kent
