Title: Home Page Photo Quiz - August 2004
Post by: Admin on August 14, 2004, 09:36:39 PM
Before we get started on this months Quiz, I (Sheriff Ron Carbaugh) want to thank all the POG members that made the trek to Mid-Ohio this year and especially the ones making it their first BIG MEET.  It was more than one could expect.

QUIZ: In the picture please name the individuals pictured and at what event this picture was taken.  Kindly start from the left and use number 1, 2, 3 etc. going right to indicate the person's name you are trying to guess.

http://www.pentonusa.org/archive/homepage/index_091504.html

Now for you out there that guess all of them right imediately :(, the Sheriff will know where you got the answer and next year at Mid-Ohio I will point out these individuals as possible people to watch out for on the track.   Boy, the Sheriff is glad there are no old AMA techs that read this site, not that I ever shaved the corners on the rules.

Let's have a good time and feel free to add information or ask  questions as you go.

Ron Carbaugh

The front rims on bikes # 1,2,& 4 look like shouldered aluminum Akronts from here. Can that be..?

Wonderful picture, thanks.

What makes me enjoy this picture so much is seeing Mr. # 1 in there. I don't believe I've seen many photos of this era with him included.
I just got a letter from #1 today.
4 and 6 ??

Rob,
#1 was far better ridder than he lets on.  Lets just say he had some VERY good days riding a Penton.  Very observant on the front wheels.  Notice anything else that stands out in the way of enduro equipment?

Donny,
  Good first effort.  Day 1

Donny,  Correct on the headlight.

Kip,  Correct on the rims and they are hard to find and normally overlooked at swap meets.  Thanks Kip for the lead on the headlights mentioned above.  I can't believe you told the world(POG Forum) where they were and as far as I know no one called Domi Racing to purchase one.

Contact Dick or Johnathan at Domi Racer, they have a lot of CEV stuff, i.e. taillights switches, lenses, wiring, bulbs. I'll bet they may be able to help you out. Why I even saw 3 original Penton steel tank large green headlamps there in isle #97 area, complete with dust. Also a good place to get the early Magura lever sets as seen on steel tankers. Give em a call or get a catalog!

Could they be Rick Spangler, Ed Vierman or Lyle Renshaw ?

Sheriff Ron, Is Kerrville anything like Mayberry ?
You could use a deputy like Barney Fife.

The "original Penton wrecking crew" at the Berkshire in May '68. As featured on the cover of Still...Keeping Track, No. 7, Summer 2000. No. 4 and No. 6 would be Cliff Chaffe and Ralph Haslage respectively.
A classic and memorable shot. Four "new" Pentons, and two Huskys which were ridden by #5 and #6.
Al Born and Doug Wilford told the tale of the arrival of the very first batch of Pentons, a couple of months earlier, at the this years "Penton day at the AMA". Don't miss it next year.

Mike,
You went to exactly where I was hoping that someone would go to find the answer.  You may notice that it isn't exactly the picture that is on the Still Keeping Track but close enough for horse shoes.  You may have one error on you answer, and the Sheriff has gone to the UPJ (Unofficial Penton Judge) for a ruling.  I will try to get the Judge in session, but you know how the Big Time Guys operate[:0].  More soon.
Mike I have an original of SKT #1 will a copy do?

Donny,
Ohio is a long way from Dan Siego.  Don't give up on Pony Express.

Mike,
The part that I thought might be in error was (is?) that I thought this picture might have been taken in 1969 at the Bershires.  The obvious answer is 1968, but we wills see.  Either way someone will jump in and settle it for us.
  Who is #1?

You're absolutely right. This is not the exactsame picture as on the cover of Still...Keeping Track. Because "Mr. #1", Al Born's, head is in slightly different positions in each of them. They were obviously taken moments apart. As to the year, we'll hear from the experts I'm sure.
As for issue #1, a copy would do just fine, thanks much. I will get an address to you separately.

I'm betting the year was 68, due to the fact that one of the bikes has the 68 style headlight. I'm sure that if it were 69 they would have the latest and greatest of everything, including the lights.

Left to right. Al Born, Tom Penton, Leroy Winters, Cliff Chaffe, John Penton, and Ralph Haslage.

Thanks Mike, that SKT was before my entry to the POG.

At this 1968 Berkshire International Enduro / Trial, John Penton was the only entry completing the 350 mile two-day enduro portion of the trials with a perfect score, and the only one to receive a Gold Medal.

Leroy Winters riding a 125 Penton lost only 3 marks to be the top Silver Medal winner.

I'll guess that van is a dark green '65 or '66 Chevy.

thanks
Bob

Also at that event the "Manufacters Team Winner" was the Penton Team.

Rob,
Thanks for clearing out old business and making my handler (Dane) happy.  And I might add Dane is a good handler and would be happier if I would quit sending him the same MotoPlat to test.  I just explained to him that I though if I put next to a good one for a year it would fix it's self......it was worth the try, but Master Dane caught it[V].

Ok on to the next part of this great racers quiz.  One person picture is Leroy Winters.  My question is which bike is his and how do you know it from the others?  Remember there are five bikes pictured (I know actually six).  We will use the same numbering system as we did for the riders, left bike is #1 etc.  Go....................[:p]

The only problem with the list, is that Cliff's last name, is Chaffee. Otherwise, good job.

The van guess is off by brand only. It was a Dodge, though honestly, I can't remember what year. The Company bought two of them, one dark red for the Husqvarna business and this green one for the Penton business. I don't know what ever happened to this one, but the Husky van met an untimely death, in which I was involved.

We were coming back from a race somewhere, (can't remember where) and I think my cousin Chris (Kovach, JP's other sister's family) was driving, got sleepy, left the road, and flipped it. I was sleeping in the back, and all I remember is fighting off flying tool boxes. Fortunately, the bikes were not with us, so we didn't hurt any of them and neither were we injured. The van, though, didn't live, though we did manage to salvage some of the parts and stuffed them away in one of the Penton family buildings, "just in case". They resided there up until about maybe 10 years ago, when that building was cleaned out of you can't imagine how much "memorabilia", when they were finally discarded.

Adm,  Karen & Bill,
Thanks for the compliments, but put the blame, oh I mean compliment[:I] on the POG people that contribute and especially the expertise from Dane, the torrid late night reading by Bob Wordlow(Rob W) and the rest of the people that tax my memory or what is left of it.  I always like Donny when he makes a guess knowing he doesn't have a chance at a correct answer, but the attitude and determination comes out.  That is the kind of enthusiasum that drives the whole nature of the Penton Owners Group.
Now for the down side[V].  Actually Al is looking at a Chevelle(327ci - see the flags on the front fender) and wondering who was invading his space.  For those of you not familiar with Al Born, he only has 49 years of service at Ford, and to say the least I raced Chevrolets all my life, but lucky for me I bought a Ford on my last purchase(to help Al's pension fund)[^].

Leroy Winters' bike is numero 2 or, the second in from the left.
At the time, Leroy's bike had a round frame mounted canister behind the front fender. Notice under the tank, and almost touching the cylinder head, clamped to the front down tubes of the frame.
It kind of looks like that chrome tool can Hodaka had on their bikes. But I can't say forsure what it was.

Again...this is really a wonderful photograph! It says alot to me. Great topic!
Thank you Bill, Karen, & Omar Sheriff.

Rob,
You are just making me work too hard.  You are correct and that was a trade mark of Leroy's bikes.  I don't know why his bikes were so well prepared that he hardly ever had problems and if he did no one, no one knew about it.  Also if you noticed (for those of you at Mid-Ohio) the 1968 Penton I purchased had the same tool box on it and it had spent it's entire life in Southern Michigan.
Oh, and Rob please if you are going to pick on me that is spelled with two "r's"  Omar Sherriff.  Get that sound right[^].
More..........as soon as I reload after all these shots taken at me!;)

Ok on to the next question.  Rob W you are disqualified for 20 hours and don't try to use that fake name of RobbyMX the Sherriff is on to your tricks;).
#1 has been correctly identified as Al Born and as the people that know Al he is a VERY proud person and is a sharp dresser and is always sooo neat.

QUESTION:  You can see that Al is race ready in the picture, for the day, but who helped him with his ridding gear??  Even at Mid-Ohio you always notice he is neat and dressed nice.  In the picture you  will notice he is all business.

Ron,

I'm surprised that you haven't identified the "tool box" that Leroy employed on his bikes, since I'm pretty sure it came from one of your former employers. I believe that it came from a CB160.

And no, Al wasn't outfitted by the Lorain County Department of Corrections, despite the fact that the color may have been right.

Ron, Considering I'm working from 3 small photos I'm really doing pretty good. What I'm having trouble with is the rims...they look like shoulderless aluminum but I can't tell. Also the tailight is a tough one as I assume it's like the one I've seen in a profile view of Tom Penton's 68 ISDT bike. I can't be sure but it is small and mounted on a license plate bracket.

Questions:  We have several out there that are un answered.
Dane is correct on the tool box on Leroy's bike coming off a Honda 160.  Since I know someone is going to say this isn't correct remember that Honda made several models of the 160.  The box came off a CB160 Sport.

Q: Prior to the release of the Penton motorcycle, what did Leroy ride in the ISDT.

Sept. 17-22 1967
42nd I.S.D.T.
Zakopane, Poland

U.S. Vase Team
Bud Ekins
Malcolm Smith
John Penton
Leroy Winters

Riding Husqvarna's

also- The "100 Mile National Championship Enduro" held in Jamestown, N.Y. on October 8, 1967. Leroy was the "Bantam Champ" riding a Sachs.

But, what I'd really like to know is why did Leroy Winters ride a Honda SL125 at the 46th I.S.D.T.(Isle of Man) in 1971.

Thanks
Bob

PS, and also...how and the heck do you insert someones quote, I've been trying to fiqure that one out for a year.
Title: Home Page Photo Quiz - August 2004
Post by: Kevin Grimes on August 24, 2004, 10:29:56 PM
Rob,
In 1965 Leroy rode a Honda S-90 (highly modified)at The Isle of Man
In 1966 it was a Husqvarna 250 in Sweden
And as you said in 1967 it was another Husqvarna 250 in Poland
 1968 Penton Italy
 1969 Penton Germany
1970 Leroy was injured in a tragic auto accident enroute to Spain
 and was unable to compete
In 1971 lets just say a lot of things worked toward Leroy riding as
an independent. Honda offered a new SL-125 and a $1000.00 dollars
to Leroy and he brought back a Silver Medal
1972 Leroy rode the same Honda SL-125 in Czechoslovakia

#1 in the picture as we know is Al Born.  To say he is a nice guy is a understatement.  I am just going to take time to give you my input on Al and please lets have fun and honor these guys for who the are and what they have done for Penton and POG.
Al is the Secretary of POG and his reporting is so good to help all of us that are not able to make the meetings keep up with our POG Business.  Al not only had one of the first Pentons, but rode the first Races that Pentons were entered.  This a milestone that can only happen once in a lifetime.  He still has his original Penton(I think it is V003................if I'm wrong I'm in trouble).  Al was a great racer and was low key.  As on can tell from his flaw less appearance I bet his bikes were the preped the same way.
Al never has really been able to hold a steady job(49 years with Ford).  Seriously, Al is so dedicated to his Company that I had to buy a Ford last time I bought a new truck, something about helping his pension.  Al is tireless in helping people and I have been the benefactor of this help.  While I was in the hospital for 4 months my family would receive his calls weekly and report my condition.  Al even had on of his friends at Ford, who had been through the same transplant, write me a letter.  What can I say but Thanks Al for being you and helping us youngsters with POG.
Of course you know I can't close without telling a fun side of Al.  Last year at Mid-Ohio Al was visiting with me and Richard Sanders when a young man came up and wanted a picture next to Al.  Right after the picture we heard the guy tell his buddies "see I told you I could get a picture of John Penton".  Of course Richard and I couldn't let this go and told his buddies that the should get John's autograph before he left.  Well Al turned a little red in the face, but you know he does a nice Autograph.

Al has not only been confused with John Penton, he has also been confused with another great racer. Al, Tom Penton and I went to the short track races while we were at VMD west a few years back. At the conclusion of the races we stood to leave and a person tapped me on the shoulder from behind, I turned around and the lady pointed to Al and asked if he was Dick Mann!
Earlier that same day, Mr. Penton had just completed his lap of honor as Grand Marshall around the Sears Point Raceway and was being interviewed by Dave Dispain. Al was riding the Penton steel tanker that Mr. Penton had used for his ride through the crowd towards the POG display. A gentleman with a camera positioned himself for the perfect shot and then hollered out his thanks to "John Penton" as Al rode on.  Al just gave me one of those " hillbilly grins " :D and kept riding.
How detailed are Al Born's records of the clubs meetings you ask,  it took three meetings to get him to quit asking "who was that" when someone sneezed!:D

All kidding aside, Al Born is one great guy and he sure helped Mr. Penton get the Penton motorcycle into the winers circle right from the start and I am really honored to have Al as a friend.

Person #2  TOM PENTON
Again I would like to give a personal side of people that I have had the honor to deal with and/or have known during (and continuing) my Penton experience.
I met Tom Penton over the telephone during my early racing of pentons, probably in 1973.  You have to remember that the main focus of Pentons in Central and Eastern parts of Texas was Moto X.  I had a situation come up where I got a new piston kit for my Berkshire and after many hours of testing the engine would be faster that it had ever been for about 60% of the power band and just stop.  I had made some major changes for that season including blueprinting the engine, porting and a new pipe.
I was at a stand still and generally being a very difficult person to be around. My Father ask what the problem was and I explained the situation.  My Father being a machinest and not really wanting me to race motorcyles told me to disassemble the bike and bring only the parts that I had changed to him.  Well in less than 10 minutes he found the problem.  It was, from the factory, a out of round piston.
My next step was to call Penton with the situation and let someone know about the problem in case this wasn't the only one that was mismanufactured.  I happened to get Tom on the phone and expalined the entire situation.  He just said "no way" and had never seen the problem before, but really wanted to be sure that that was the real problem.  So after he got it he let me know that he appreciated the heads up and that it appeared to be the only one or that there were no more with the same problem in stock.
In the future it was always easy to get in touch with Tom and I always identified myself as the MX guy from Texas.  Kinda funny now that I look back on it, but at the time it seemed neat.
Here is where the real basis for the above explaiation begins.  Tom Penton is a very detail person.  If you ask him a question or ask for a explaination you better be ready to listen and he will not let you off the phone unless he feels you understand the answer.  Now this is 1973 and I was getting phone calls averaging $20.00 each when I called.  There were no great rates back then so if you were going to ask a mechanical question you better be ready to listen.  I would always try to end a call in that I truely did understand the explaination, but Tom wanted to be sure that it was totally understood.  So I came up with the philosphy that I had better have a good question when I called Tom or don't call.  To this day I wish I had a copy of some of those phone bills just for the memorys.
When I think back on Doug Wilford's explainations of how the entire Penton process was think and do, I always think of Tom and the fuel hose from the carburetor to clear it out after a fall.
THANKS TOM FOR THE GREAT MEMORYS ALL STARTED BY A LITTLE PISTON

Person #3 Leroy Winters
Again just a little personal side of some of the people in this months Picture Quiz.  I guess so much has been said and written about Leroy that I don't want to bore people with the same old stories, but I did happen to be friends with Leroy and want to share with everyone some insight on Leroy.
I first met Leroy on a racing MX racing trip up through Arkansas and Oklahoma back in 1973.  He was nice, but I could tell he was too busy to bother to hit a few races.  I later found out that he was busy readying for the ISDT.  So I only got to met and visit and discuss Pentons and that was our initial meeting.
Some years later, after going to work for Honda, Leroy and I started trying to get Honda more involved with the enduro market and ISDT.  To put this in perspective Leroy was a Honda dealer.  Our efforts along with a lot of input from others was starting to get some interest from Honda which produced the first XR line.  As I moved from one job to another at Honda, Leroy and his friend Mike Lewis(ISDT Rider and also a Honda Dealer) became better friends and we had more input to Honda on various bikes.
Leroy's shop was located in Fort Smith Arkansas and was a show place in itself.  Leroy once built a Helecopter that was so beautiful that the company that built the kit bought it back from him to use as the show piece.
Later in life I followed Leroy, seems like I was like so many other always behind him, into the wilds of Mexico and Copper canyon and beyond.  To say Leroy was full of adventure was an understatement.
There are many other stories, but I wish Kevin Grimes would tell a story or two on what it was like to grow up in the same town where Leroy's shop was located.
Anyone else with a story please jump in.

Story-1 Growing up down the street from Leroy's Cycle Shack was a great opportunity for a young lad to observe and learn many things that I still use today, but more about that later. I remember the first cycle shop being in the basement of the house located on the property that would later be the sight of the "Honda Store" as Leroy would always call it. I have pictures of Leroy actually erecting this structure himself. If you ever visited the place you couldn't help but notice the architecture of this huge buiding made up of 12 inch wooden beams, encorporating three levels, a high arched ceiling, a loft for displays, and an apartment upstairs. Leroy  designed this building and salvaged the lumber to build it from a locomotive repair depot. The landscaping outside was all Leroy with rock walls, waterfalls, and live fish swimming around through the moat as I use to call it. When I asked Leroy why he was up on top of all those high beams himself erecting the building, he said he didn't have enough money to hire people to do things he could do. Needless to say Leroy could do it all. In later years Leroy eventually moved out of this building and relocated to a new struture south of town in front of his house. There is a whole other story in itself, imagine a house, round in shape, multiple levels, secret passage ways, and a swimming pool that had a window so you could see beneath the water from inside the bar area. Leroy's son Bart, at one time reopened the orginal Cycle Shack and called it Bart's Bike Barn. Today the original building still stands, privately owned and not used for any commercial purpose. If your ever traveling through Fort Smith Arkansas detour over to the corner of Hwy. 271 and Cavanaugh Road and see this ghost of history past before it either burns or fall down from 40 years of relentless termite attacks.     Kevin

Story-2 Every school day I would ride my bicycle past Leroy's Cycle Shack on my way to another daily dose of education. Many mornings Leroy would be out with a water hose washing down the parking lot. One day it was raining and sure enough there's Leroy out in the rain washing the parking lot. I had to stop and ask why he would be engaged in such activity in the pouring rain?
He replied "oh that's easy.....you use less water." As I road off to school I realized I had just received the days education.

Hi Russ,

the website had a major server crash in 2005, and I don't think backups were able to be 100% recovered, so this pic may or may not still be findable.   Perhaps your best bet would be to send an email (from this site) to the Admin or Paul Danik (President of POG).  Admin is the "author" of this thread - go to the first page of this thread, click on email icon (middle one) in the Admin's initial post, and email your info/request to him.

Russ,

Welcome to the POG website.  I just spent some time looking through a number of photo albums and I don't have the original photo in question.  I do have the newsletter that ran the picture on the cover, I will be more than glad to make a copy of the cover of the newsletter and mail it to you.

I remember your brother, his name comes up quite often when I am around the gang from Amherst.  Do you remember Al Born?  I traveled with Al and John Penton to Sears Point, Cal. a few years back and lots of Al's stories revolved around times that he and your brother spent together.  You can send me your address at   [email protected]

    Great to hear from you.
