Post by: tmc3c on January 05, 2005, 02:41:12 AM
Can anyone give me the color green I need to paint my steel tanker tank ? And also the correct white also ? I am in the process of getting all of my ducks in a row before my new quest!!:D

Thomas;   The best advice for the color green that I can give you from my experience.    Clean off a good area of the tank.   Take the tank to a paint dealer that has color matching spectogram or something like that, to try to make a match.   Even at that I was back four times to get the mix changed to make the colors as close as possible.   I think someone once told me there are more shades of green than any other color in the spectrum.   When trying to match the Penton Steel Tank green, I believe it.   Plus the Penton green has quite a metallic base to it, which also adds to the task.   Have Fun

Thomas,
  We can work on this just like we did on the 250 Penton.  I will email you a picture of the steel tanker I am getting hopefully this month.

Here is a post by Crash Carden from a few years ago on this topic. I have not gotten around to paint on my steel tank yet, so I can't verify color match. That same thread mentioned paint codes on the Penton Restoration Page. Hope this helps. When you get it painted, let us know how the colors work.

"Hello Clayman, I have a restoration paint chart that states 1968-71 steel tank 125 color is L79835 green metalic, steel tank side panels,L79621 white, Frame,L15001 silver metalic. All paint products are R/M Brand Limco Supreme Single Stage.Pre-paint cleaner,Dupont 3949S. Primer,SEM Self Etching 39681 Gray. Scotch Brite(Brown)after primer and between coats. Reducer,LR1272. Hardener,LH85. Steel tanks black stripe separates two tone with white stripe 1/2 inch above black stripe.Shock Bodies All, L13572 Black. Hope this helps you out I got this restoration paint chart from a penton parts dealer. My paint& body man tells me that a pint of each color will be enough for multi coats and with paint left over for touch ups. Good luck, Crash."

Doug, My bike has been painted of all colors YELLOW and had been taken all the way down to bare metal before doing so. On a brighter note I played golf yesterday and it was so warm it was HOT ! but my game wasn't !!

Ron, You need to open a Penton dealer! What a beauty!!! How do you find em ? That in itself could be a book,I bet you have my old bikes that I raced in the 70's

Crash, Thank You !! I belive that will cover it!! Th:)anks

Can someone tell me if the paint codes posted by Crash Carden (below) are the exact codes that were used on the bikes when they were manufactured?

I just got off the phone with a rep at BASF the company who owns R-M Limco paints. I read off the below paint codes and this is what he told me:

L79835 = metalic jade green
L79835 = mellow white
L15001 = metalic silver

He gave me the name of a few places in MA where I may be able to find these colors, but he told me to drop the "L" designation before the paint codes as the "L" is no longer used.  He also told me that the original Limco Supreme Single Stage is no longer produced as paints have come a long way and that it was most likely that the originals had lacquer.  He said these colors are available from Limco in two different paints.

1.) A less expensive enamel (maybe $18-25 per qt)

2.) An expensive/durable base coat gel coat would run between $20-35 per qt. The gel coat will out perform the original paints as they are more durable than what was available even 10 years ago.

Again, drop the "L" prefix/designation when referring to these paints.

I spoke with Lyn (male) He sounded like he knew what he was talking about.

Has anybody gone this route tracking down the original codes through BASF?
