I just came in from the Mailbox. Opened up the envelope containing the newest issue of Vintage Views. And who do I see? Our own Bob Wardlow. At least I think that is him. They couldn't identify him by rider number due to the mud :-). Way to go Bob!
Mark
Thank you Mark,
Yep, out of the 5300 AHRMA members to grace the cover, this month is my 15 minutes of fame. I won't be due to come up again until the year 2446, so I'm gonna take it all in right now.
Something to watch for if you're riding AHRMA events, is to see if Matt Benson is there taking photos, he offers these photos for sale and you can find them on the AHRMA site. Last week I ordered two 8 x 10's from the same event as this mag cover. It's a shopping cart sort of thing thru "Dot Photo", it took three days and they're beautiful photographs.

For those of us who don't get Vintage Views, Thanks for the home page picture of Bob !! What a cool shot !! Way to go Bob !! GO TEAM PENTON!![8D]Thanks Karen for looking out for us !!
Thomas Carmichael
A big thanks goes to Matt Benson from AHRMA who provided the original photo for us to work with. Incase you haven't noticed, if you click on the home page photo it will enlarge for better study of it's neat details. , THANKS KAREN!!!
Notice the toe on the shifter, light body english, total concentration, what a great shot! If you didn't know better you might think this shot was taken back in the "70s".
OK you AHRAMA racers this ought to get you motovated for this coming season. Lets hear from you guys, what are your plans? What are you riding? How do you prep your bikes? What are your favorite event locations? Motocross? Trials? Cross country? How about some pointers for guys who are sitting on the sidelines thinking about running some events.
Thanks Paul,
I don't ride or race my Penton nearly as much as I'd like to. But about half the times I have gone in the last few years, I've ran into some wet and sloppy conditions.
It changes everything, the bikes reliability, your riding pace and riding style. Having no traction wears you out faster because it's harder to relax. I've gained a much deeper appreciation for guys that can ride fast in the mud. Now that my bike is worn in (looking used and commited to be a racer) I like the mud once in awhile.
The day in this picture I'm using a new Michelin S12 front tire for the first time. I was love'n it, and so relieved to get rid of the worthless Dunlop 777 that tried to kill me.
Ever since I started riding Vintage, I switched to a open face helmet, non-neon pants, and pads under the jersey, just to feel the part I guess, but it seems natural to me. I actually like wearing a open face helmet better. I know I've heard of the consequences, but I just got a new blue Bell RT. So I'm gonna be stylin even more this year. :)
You can see I have two pairs of googles hanging around my neck. Even if I had five tear-offs on the googles they would'nt have lasted. If they still make them, I'm buying some Smith Roll-Offs.
It's hard for me to make a schedule of the events I want to ride this year. That all revolves around freedom and cash. But the rides I'm hoping to make are-
- Local trail rides
- One or two, Great Lakes Region AHRMA Vintage MX events.
- One, Midwest Region AHRMA MX at Byron, IL.
- Three, AHRMA Natl. Vintage MX's and CC's. Casey, IL., Mid-Ohio, Portland, MI.
- The "Fall Pine Cone Vintage Enduro" (Jackpine).
- The Leroy Winters ISDT Reunion Ride.
Rob
Kudos on the cover shot Rob.
I remember seeing that you were bidding on the helmet a while back.;) That sure will look good with the skunkworks stripes on it for your next picture.:D

I also Love the shirt you are wearing !! It matches the one I have on now except mine is short sleeve. I am planning on running on March 20th in Washington G.A. "PRO -FLO SOUTHEAST VINTAGE & POST VINTAGE MX SERIES" I will run this and see if I can make some of the others. I will also try and get Greg Holder to pull one of his Toys out of the garage and go with me, that way we will have at least one Penton out front !! Ya See I am a TEAM PLAYER !!:D[:p]
On two other occasions, Poggers have made the cover of the AHRMA newsletter and we thought this would be a good time to give them some deserving recognition too. And who will be the next Pogger to make the cover of AHRMA??? ;)

Hey Ron, There's your bike!
Thanks for posting the pictures. I can't describe how it feels for Joe Blow rider to open that envelope and see his picture on the cover of a national newsletter.
They probably want to put a PENTON on every cover but feel they must put some off brands there to be fair;)
Dennis Jones
Dennis,
Is this part of the lessons you promised me on ridding trials? I like the bike and it is a Hoot to ride it at he race tracks..."what kinda bike is that Ron". When I tell them a Penton it gets into a serious discussions. Thanks again Dennis for parting with it. I love it.
Ron Carbaugh
Ron, you have to put a cast iron motor on it. You won't believe the difference the porting makes on them. Plus you can bore it out to 152! My machinist hates me for doing them. I know how you like to bore stuff out. You can even use a 100 cylinder. You're used to over-boring them. OOPS! did I let the cat out of the bag?
Lew Mayer
Hey Lou,
What event were you riding when that picture was taken, it looks kinda sandy and has a lot of pine trees? Man I can see lots of nice soft places to fall:D It reminds me of the area where they run the Swamp Fox Enduro, I believe that was around Charlestown, NC.
Dennis, was your picture taken at Mid-Ohio?
Paul
That was Gainesville,last year.
Lew Mayer
Hey Paul, That is Charleston S.C. that the Swamp Fox is ran. That is where my buddy and pal Bobby Manucy gets his handle from here in POG "Swamp Fox" ! Have you ever raced in it ? Greg Holder just ran it last week and he said he thought he got a 4th overall. He was riding a NEW 450 Husky. Charleston is HOME for me even though I live in the Upstate of S.C. now. And YES it does look like the Francis Marion Forest.:D
Thomas Carmichael
Thomas,
I rode the Swamp Fox back sometime in the 70s, maybe 73-74. Jack Penton his brother Tom and I ran down in Jack's van. I really enjoyed that ride, the trails seemed to have a great rhythm to them, lots of nice tight twisty stuff through the pine forests. I remember riding on some banked and contoured single track that was designed to carry water to help fight forest fires, kind of like riding in a bobsled run.
Lew, you mentioned at the York swapmeet that you were heading to Gainesville again this year, when is that? Do you ride the trials and Cross Country both?
Paul
Paul, That picture was at Peoria, IL. It was a brand new section and the crux move came right after the photo. I had 2 cleans and a crash on it. Not sure whitch one the photo was.
Dennis Jones
Thanks Dennis. I remember watching you at Mid-Ohio before I knew you, you really ride those trials bikes well. I guess now you perfer the cross country, or are you doing both?
Paul
Lew,
We need to talk. That is why you have my email address...get it![8]
Ron Carbaugh
Paul & Thomas,
I went out there this last weekend and took my daughter again to see the junior enduro. KTM was the weapon of choice even for the kids. I talked to a guy there from Florida riding a 77 Bultaco who said he had some Penton's in the past. There was also someone racing a Triumph TT500 and another older KTM. I missed the first four rows of the start, so I didn't see Greg take off, but I did drive around to some of the trails that were accessable and see some more action. TC, we are going to have to put our bikes in there next year! I've just never done one and wouldn't know where to begin, but the ride would be so much fun. Racedaypixs was taking pictures, and yes, the one of Lew looks like it could have been right there. Link to raceday from //www.setra.org//

Paul, the cross-country and trial are on Fri. Mar.4. I'll ride them both like last year. This year I may try the Ironman and ride the Vintage MX on Sunday. Never rode an MX in my LIFE. After Friday, my buddies may just abandon me with my Six-Day at the track and head for Daytona. If I ride the Ironman, it'll be on all Pentons. JP,SixDay and trialer.
Lew Mayer
My soon-to-be-wife (yes, my days are numbered!), Toni, noticed a big "GOOF" on the Vintage Views cover. Can anyone else find it? And no, I'm not talking about the one the Penton!
Gary
Hey Paul, You got to ride in the forest in Charleston before Hugo hit and that was when it was the best. Tall Tall Pines , open Trails, and berms that seem to go sky high !! I remember well ! and WOOPS !! How did you do down there?
Thomas Carmichael
Thomas,
I would like to tell you that I won the national overall and was the only finisher, but that would be a big lie:D I do remember that Jack, Tom and I all trophied, but the main thing I remember is what a great ride it was through all of those pines and there was nice soft soil without hardly any rocks, just talking about it MAKES ME WANNNNNNA RIDE!!!!!!
Gary,
You guys got me on this one! I guess I will hafta tune in tomorrow for the "rest of the story".
Paul
Gary
I've been known as a big GOOF.
I think that AHRMA is a little late in sending out last years January issue. It's so late they decided to headline 2005 sponsors!
Rob
That's a beautiful shot of your Mint 400. All covered in mud just like it was meant to be.
WARNING: The Surgeon General has determined that castor smoke can be hazardous to your health. It is highly addictive and causes delusions of grandeur.
Thanks Paul,AHRMA used to have events like Ridgedale, Mo that were just a Trial and Cross Country. All my buddies were riding both and I was left standing around. I started looking around for a Penton and found my Jackpiner and it just kinda took over. My first ride on it was at that Rigedale CC and it was also the first competition other than a trials I had ever rode in my life. I got a first out of six in my class, that Penton new what to do because I sure didn't. I do plan to ride more trials this season.
Dennis Jones
Thanks to Kent Knudson for bringing this to our attention. It seems that a 4th POGGER was on the cover of the AHRMA newsletter. The following is the information sent to us by Kent:
"Our groom-to-be, Gary Roach, made the cover in September 2001. The shot is of him on our 400 beating Tim Shephard for the Open Age Expert win. Gary went on to win the AHRMA Open Age Expert and Sportsman 500 Expert National Championships in 2001. We were also pleasantly surprised to find this image used on the 2002 AHRMA t-shirt. Keep up the good work!"
