Title: How many chain links needed?
Post by: clayman on February 19, 2005, 12:23:52 PM
Can someone please tell me how many chain links are needed for my 1971 steel tanker? Am I correct thinking that the chain size is 428?
Thanks,
Clay

Hi Clay,

428 is correct.
My '70 (same thing) has 120 links in the chain. With 14 and 60 for gearing, and the rear axle almost all the way forward.
Chains normally come in 120 and 130 link lengths. If your sprockets are this size, I'd say it'd be safe to go 120. If they're much larger, do the 130 and cut to proper length.
The early parts manuals for these bikes list the standard chain length to be 120 links.
Hope this helps,
I mailed you a letter today.
thanks,
Bob W

Bob,

Thanks for the info. I'll probably buy 130 links to be safe, then cut it to fit. Will be sending you a "care" package, soon!:)

Take care,
Clay

Hi Clayman.  I ,am using a 428H  126 links. But the "H" is a little to wide for my chain guide so had to modify it to make a little wider. Plain 428  chain wouldn,t need the mod.   hope this helps   Don H
