This Quiz will have us taking a closer look at Steel Tankers. Of course the standard rules apply...that is Rob W can't answer the quiz for the first 24 hours[:o)]. Actually we will be doing some studies on steel tankers in the future (the future is now) that will give everyone a chance to contribute. So stay tunes and we will have some fun, but remember old racers (me) move slow so be nice and patient.

I believe that this is an Italian of some note. If it is who I think it is, he is the son of a baker and began riding Penton motorcycles when he was still in the Italian military.
Dane
I'm guessing that this bike has a blue and chrome tank and is called a Jackpiner???
Donny Smith
If Dane thinks he's Italian, perhaps Mario Rinaldi?
Jeff DeBell
All good guess' but not on mark yet.

Jeff, didn't Mario Rinaldi race bigger bikes, 350s - 400s?

Peter,
Think much earlier than Mario Rinaldi. This rider had a link to Mario though.
Dane
Peter listen to the Big Guy(Dane). Actually he is kinda a smaller type guy with Big Credentials......[:o)].
O.Sherriff...A kinds big guy with small credentials.
Ron Carbaugh
Well, if no one else is going to take Dane up on his clues, I believe this is none other than Arnaldo Farioli.
Kent
Dane & Ron, Kent nailed it (like I'm telling you something you didn't know:D)- Arnaldo Farioli - but I don't think I would have gotten this one for another day or two of Googling and poking. Great photos. Great Quiz. Great fun with the banter!
Good job Kent! (Does he win a shiny new Steel Tanker?;))
The gals and guys of POG are the BEST!
GO PENTON!

Check out the number on the number plate, is that John's or Leroy's bike from way back? I believe I have a large photo of John riding that bike in "68" ISDT[?] Then again, I may be crazy[:p]
Ahhh, Farioli! Of course! As Mr. Know-It-All used to say "You should have known." Isn't KTM Farioli still a strong presence in the World Enduro Championship and ISDE?

Sherriff is being silent since we have some good dialog going on ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ[}:)].

O. Sherriff, Looks like another fine one you've got brewing here.
The bike in the picture is alot like the bikes used in the 1969 ISDT in W. Germany. Comparing it to the bike Mr. Penton rode, 1)it has the same style of silencer on the exhaust pipe.
It does appear to have chrome panels on the tank, and 2)the '69 ISDT Team bikes had chrome panels on the tank. 3)They also had little oval KTM decals above "Penton" on the tank. 4) They also had tank bags. 5) Their riding clothes look the same. 6) In that same ISDT, Leroy was #71, J.P. was #76 and that bike is 79.
Could it be Bud Green??
It kind of looks like Jeff or Jack abit. But my eyes are'nt what they use to be.
Thanks,
Bob W
OK...It is Arnaldo Farioli and then the Guru(Rob W) comments from there on are on point from my Memory which is slowing down everyday. Kent thanks for your input.
Now can anyone throw any light on where this picture was taken????
Thanks to everyone for the time and input...so get those old magazines out and computers humming.
Ron Carbaugh
Ron, Thanks for challenging us with the quiz each month. I'm anxious to hear more about the location and bike. Maybe Dane could even elaborate upon the Farioli/KTM connection a little bit for us.
Peter, I like your idea about winning a shiny new Steel Tanker! I'll take mine in blue and chrome[:p]
Kent
Kent,
Great idea....I think...Dane[:p].
About winning a New Penton I can't explain the feeling when I get a lead on a lost Penton...I hope that feeling never dies...thanks Peter

I first met Arnaldo Farioli the summer that I lived at Mr. Trunkenpolz' home. I don't know anything of his background before that, but I know that at that time, he was in the Italian army, and when he was not involved in training, he worked for his father in their family bakery.
At that time, since KTM was not manufacturing any competition motorcycles except for the Pentons, there was no distributor for the Penton's in Italy. So Arnaldo would come up to KTM and buy two or three bikes, take them back to Italy, and then sell them to his friends and acquaintances. Through this "business", he eventually became the Italian distributor for KTM.
At the time he started becoming an dealer for the Penton's, Arnaldo was one of the best Italian riders in the enduro world, so besides selling the Pentons, he also rode them in the Italian events as well as other international events. I don't know much of his competition success, but his business savvy eventually made him a very wealthy (at least by my standards) man.
A few years ago, Arnaldo finally sold the Italian KTM distributorship, to KTM, but I believe that he is still involved in running the business.
When KTM went bankrupt in the early 90's, Arnaldo was one of the 5 people who stepped in and assisted in purchasing the company from the bankruptcy courts. There were some big money investors, but since they didn't know anything about the motorcycle business, they allowed the distributor group to operate the company. It was in this business transaction, that Arnaldo ended up with KTM's museum pieces, which includes the prototypes of the 125 and 175 Pentons.
Dane
Another interesting feature in this photo is how much air Arnaldo is catching on that steel tanker and he sure doesn't look like a guy who is in a midair panic thinking about his return to earth. It does however look as though he had used all of the travel in his forks before. I guess when it comes to fork travel it isn't how much you have but how well you use it.
Paul
Dane,
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of Arnaldo with us. It sounds like a delegation of us POGers needs to be sent over to "research" Arnaldo's collection[:p]
