My brother and I just sandblasted and painted our first steeltanker frame. Man are there a lot tubes and crevices to get to. Also a lot of small parts that get painted. It was worth the effort though as it came out looking sweet.The original paint on the tank polished out nice. With the motor done and seat recovered and a box full of stainless fasteners that the UPS guy just delivered comes the fun part. Bolting it all back together :D I should be well on my way to having a steeltanker pit bike for Mid-Ohio [^]

What primer and paint did you use? How many coats did you apply? Did you wet sand between each coat application?
I'm gearing up to do the same thing, and can use the advice, for sure!

Tom, V2271 is coming along real nice. I sent the seat to Rick in the Dalles and he did a real good job. Got some of Al's repo steel number plates, exhaust cap, and chain gaurd. We were able to make that bent exhaust pipe look like new.
Larry, We sandblast all the parts and wipe them down with a metal prep that is thin, blue and smells like alcohol. Then a coat of epoxy primer. When dry to the touch 2 coats of paint, when dry to the touch 2 coats of clear. No sanding at all between coats. When all the parts have been prepped and hung up the whole painting process only takes about an hour. Thats about as much as I can tell you as my brother is the painter and I'm the flunky sandblaster. I can find out more specifics about the paint if you like

Rod, the fasteners are one of the best parts of this rebuild. I just discovered //www.boltdepot.com . There website is super easy to use, they ship fast, have everything you need to restore a Penton, and best of all no minimum quantity. I made a list of every bolt on this bike as I took it apart plus extra stuff for stock and got it all for a little over $60.
