Title: Correct Carb Boot?
Post by: imported_n/a on December 14, 2005, 07:56:45 PM
POG, The carb boot on my 74 Six Day is the ribbed version and seems to be incorrect. The carb is of course a Bing. When installed the boot seems to be too long so consequently it's crammed in between the airbox and the carb. The carb and airbox holes seem to be almost directly opposite one another but the boot looks like it's designed to come off the carb and then up a little to the airbox. Is there one out there for a better fit? I've seen some non-ribbed versions that look like more of a straight shot from the carb to the box. Thoughts? Thanks in advance,

Do you have a reed valve? What you describe is what I had with my Six Day equipped with a reed valve. I did some surgery on the boot then boiled the boot for a few seconds in boiling water to make it more plyable. It fit like a glove.

I have noticed that the Bing on the B engine is not as close to the air box as the Bing on the "D" engine. Which do you have?

Rod, Don, thanks for the replies. Late B engine and no reed valve. Suppose I could whittle on it a bit but prefer not to. It just doesn't seem to be a straight shot to the carb and was wondering if it may even be restricting the air flow a little the way it's sandwiched in there.

John, same boot as in the photo and after closer inspection two of the ribs are collapsed inward which has the effect of stretching the whole thing out about an inch. It's also quite hard just in those two areas, not brittle, but not plyable anymore. I'll put this minor issue to rest and get my hands on a new one! Done deal, thanks for your time and the picture.

crheeterman,
Finding a new boot is very hard to do. I wish you all the luck in finding one, but, if not you can boil it to make it more plyable, get the shape back and install it. Gotta do it when it's still warm though.

Hi Guys,
Sorry to get off the subject, but does anyone sell the rubber carb adapter shown in the photo John linked to?
I have a cylinder with a mounting plate welded to the cylinder and I need one of those rubber adapters. Mines got a bad split.
Thanks for any help.

Lew,
I don't know if they make the Six Day for Sachs engine boot, but they do make a ton of others. They bought a lot of NOS different KTM boots that I had to use as models.

Donny,
I know, I thought he was too except I thought I bought two from him in the last 6 months to finish projects.

Ron,
They are availabe from two companies that sells other carburetor accessories.  I will see if I have any address in my bookmarks.  I know BilDough (Bill Cappel) bought one in November.  Maybe he will read this and answer the question.
