I am also looking for a Airbox for a 1978 MC5 125 and do not know if the type pictured is what I need. If so after Phil I could use one...Kirk

Rocket,
I have a cover like you are looking for.  It isn't an extra, however.  I'll talk with Tom B. and some others about repop possibilities with either 'glass or plastic.

The picture that is posted is actually a 125, but the 250 airbox is very similar. My brother has a 1978 MC5 250 also, and he bought an NOS Acerbis air box that is Opaque in color and seems slighty smaller and would need spacers to fit the frame, but it is the correct design with the top and side openings. He is also looking for the side cover that converts the airbox to a true hi-breather once covered. The part # on the airbox he bought is 55.06.101.000 I don't have a 1978 MC5 chassis manual yet to be able to determine whether it is a 125 airbox, or which model it fits. We both need the correct 250 airbox, and he may consider trading his for the correct one. I need the airbox for my 1978 250 MC5 and eventually will want the side cover, but that can always be added later, the airbox by its self is what I need at this point, as I should have the frame dissasembled, painted and ready for reassembly within a couple of weeks or so. Thanks, [email protected]

The 125 & 250 airboxes are the same (400 too), all sharing the same part number. The difference is in the airfilter boot to the carb. The part number for the 125 boot is 51.06.026.500.

The Opaque colored airbox my brother has, differs from one that was pictured for sale on eBay a while back before I bought my 1978 MC5 250 in the design where the orange original airbox for sale had a much lower section below the filter that allowed water to collect and drain while not soaking the filter, and the Opaque NOS box is rounded off at the lowest point of the filter not having that feature. I saved the picture on my computer at the time for reference and can email it to you if you wish. I wonder why the difference between production and replacement stock?

Sorry dont have one , but does the 1979 mc80 use a cover like this one or is there foam lip on the side panel ? I could use a filter cage if anyone has one .  Also do you need to take off the rear wheel to get the air box in the frame on the 1979? thanks GD

The 79-81 250 airboxes at least do not have an opening on the side, only the top. I have a couple of extra 250 79-81 style airboxes, but no extra cages, retainers, or locking rods. I bought mine off of eBay and you often see the cages, retainers, and locking rods for sale with the airboxes. I have special ordered 3 KTM UNI filters from a local Honda dealer that include a cage inside the filter. If they turn out to be as expected, I would sell or trade at least one of the cages I have.

I have a complete airbox, except for the white cover from a 78 400.  Looks the same as the photos.  Any fair offers accepted.

Post by: 454MRW on January 04, 2006, 08:05:32 PM
I would like to thank Phil and Tony for their help in locating a 1978 MC5 complete airbox which is on its way to me as we speak for my latest project, which I pulled the engine out of just this afternoon.
I would like to note that the pictures I was sent of this airbox is not quite like the picture shown, or like the Acerbis NOS one my brother has, but it should be correct, which leads me to the conclusion that although the manuals may shown that 1978 MC5 airboxes are all the same by part number, evidently there is some differences between either models or date of production. Thanks every one!
I am also still looking for at least 1 or 2 of the rubber grommets that wrap around the "U" shaped bracket in front of the tank on MC5 frames. I thought I had located some NOS ones, but the gentleman was mistaken. I have one original one, but I also need one for my 1977 MC5 project frame and my brothers 1978 MC5 250. Thanks!

Mike,

Have you spoken with Al Buehener about those rubber tank grommets?  He's the first person I would speak to about it.  It helps if you have the make, model, year, and part number handy when you call.  You can find his phone number under the Suppliers link on this site.

I'm glad I could help you out.  Pictures are worth a thousand words aren't they?

Phil,
I don't have a 1978 MC5 chassis manual yet, but want one and in the 1977 MC5 chassis manual I have, the only part shown for this application is incorrectly shown and listed as one of the round rubber bumpers used on the sides and the rear of the bottom side of the fuel tank. Like I stated before, not all information in the manuals are entirely accurate. I have pictures that I can send Al of my original part from the 78, and on the 77 MC5 frame that sold on eBay a few days ago, so hopefully he might be able to come up with a couple. Thanks again!

Michael,

If you have photos of the rubber parts you need, please send them to me.  I have both a 77 & a 78, so I may have what you need.

I have an orange airbox on one my '78 models that was made by HiPoint. The top of the box is closed, and the opening is in the back, right in front of the inner fender. It has the left side filter access hole, but the hole cover is a different shape. It also has a different filter and cage, and the cage is held in by a rod. It has the HiPoint name molded into the plastic.

I had a new 125 in '78, and it would quit running at any water crossing or when it rained heavily. KTM said that the design of the top of the airbox was the problem, and they gave me one of these HiPoint airboxes for free.

If any of you guys can help me, I am trying to restore a 79 KTM 250 and I noticed in this recent series of posts the discussion on airboxes. If someone has a decent airbox for a 79 i would be interested in purchasing it. Thanks

Bob,

I think I can help you here.  I believe I have a complete airbox available.  However, I don't think I can locate it until early next week due to my upcoming weekend activities.
