Bob,
Thanks for stepping in and offering to help.  I will be in touch with Ric if I have anyone wanting any of his bikes.  Since he is a Registered Honda Tech and has been since the 70's his bikes are as described.

To everyone;
I just sent this email to Ric and feel he will respond.  I just thought I would break the ice for him.  You guys are the greatest.

Ric,
Excuse me bothering you, but you need to go on the POG site and give people the choice of sending you a check or paypaling you.  I feel like you are really uncomfortable with this because I know you are a proud person, but your NEW AND OLD FRIENDS want to help you and Mert.  Let me know if I can help.  I would like to pay pal you if that is OK?

Hello all you great people,my e mailbox is jammed up with kind thoughts and wishes and i'm trying to answer them all and keep an eye on Mert as well.i really did not expect this and don't know what to say or how to act, except let's just say i'm a lot choked up right now and typing thru tears.I have never seen any other group of people with so much love and compassion for a animal they don't even know.Though he is a great little guy i must admit.Mert is home(after 3 days in emergency and sedated but you would never know it)with his buddy Malcolm-my other golden, and  he's doing as well as can be expected but has a long road ahead.let me just say that i am selling some things to cover the tests and treatment and hope to have it all covered and i didn't expect this and really don't know how to act(did i already say that?).YOU GUYS ARE REALLY PIECES OF WORK-GOOD WORK!i just was selling a few bikes and you guys do this -what a group-i'm speechless and that don't happen often.i'll keep you updated and am answering emails as fast as i can while trying to watch for seizures and keep him out of stuff.he's a handfull sometimes but will sit in the garage and watch while i work on bikes for hours.if he needs a ct scan i'm going to try and get it done this week.the neurologist said today the problem is in the brain for sure.i just can't tell you guys how i'm feeling right now-all i know is this is a great bunch of guys(and gals).anyway thanks for thinking of my buddy and me,i hope to have it covered but if you must, either way Ron said is ok though i don't feel right about it, if he is saved....... that's all i can say right now.hard to watch the little guy and write when i'm all emotional like this- Thanks Guys You Are Something Special.  , my address is   Ric Emmal  2930 W. I always said that dogs were better friends than most people.
Example: Call your best human friend up at 3AM & tell him you want to play fetch with a ball.  See what he tells you!!!
Then, try it on your dog.

Gavin,
You make a good point.  You could put it on the other board, but I think most people read both.  You choice and thanks again for your Great Idea.  I talked with Ric last night and he was resting when he could keep Mert down to rest.

Like Randy said "I always said that dogs were better friends than most people".

I even kicked in an extra $5.00 for my pet wild duck that lives behind my house...I guess he is a race duck and wanted in on the action.  THANKS EVERYONE

Hi All, I hope to thank each and every one of you personally as soon as possible.right now every minute on the computer is a minute not keeping an eye on Mert(or at least not watching as close as i should be)so i must be brief.Gavin-where did you ever come up with this?you have a heart of gold i guess as do all of you guys.Tom,i will try to get Bob to post pics of Mert(on quad as pup and now)asap.and TB don't worry about relisting those parts-those are for one of the last ones i would sell anyway(a project),and thanks to these guys generosity i may not have to.this came up so quickly it caught me unprepared and i now realize what's really important(not that i didn't before but i WAS on a bike buying binge for a while).if some or all must go they must, but i assume you guys want me to keep the Pentons and sell the others first-ok- done!he's acting up a bit, gotta go.My bikes are great but they never jump up and lick my face after a hard day. Thanks , Ric

P.S.-Donny and all,Mert's AKC registered name is Mert Lawwill Emmal,my other golden's Malcolm so as you can probably tell On Any Sunday had a HUGE impact on my life. When the desert racer crashed to avoid turtle(fake but neat), picked up the turtle, brushed him off and set him off the trail-that says it all- desert racers (and for sure ALL Poggers)are good people...  The day i saw that movie the rest of my life fell into place-racer,m/c tech, etc.I'm a bay area native and Mert Lawwill, the human one, was one of my heroes and lived a few miles away back when a normal person could afford to live there in Marin County.I must apologize for being slow in answering emails i'm trying to get to them-so busy.I'll try and do some after my boy goes to sleep.Just so much thanks,Ric

Hi Guys,First of all Mert is taking to his new meds fine, which is quite a relief.apparently some dogs get worse with treatment as their immune system goes haywire.I can't make the national as Mert is still on seizure watch and hates long truck rides anyway, but the truck left today and thanks to you guys my only Penton that's a runner(the 250)was not on it with a for sale sign.IT's safe at home where it belongs. Also some projects and parts bikes i bought quite a while back from oregon and was picking up at the race won't have to be sold for now as Thom Green said i could pay him fuel money whenever i get it for delivering that stuff(super nice guy),and Bob's picking that stuff up for me.you guys have really helped out and the support and kindness is incredible.just knowing i have you guys in our corner for this fight makes me more optimistic.photos of Mert will be posted by Bob monday hopefully.Robert "Skip" Page must get a special thank you (for incredible support-amazing!)Skip-I have your footpeg you need but lost your phone #,please call-I'm home all weekend..And thanks so very much again to all of you-i'm so proud and honored to be associated with POG .i'll keep you posted....Mert,Malcolm, and Ric                          P.S.-Good Luck to all our Poggers racing out there this weekend-go fast, stay safe,Pentons Rule!

To Everyone,
Here is a picture of our new POG mascot...I haven't checked with the bosses yet, but it might be nice to have Penton Owners Group mascot named Mert.  Thanks to Gavin Housh for getting the ball rolling with a great idea.  We have helped a fellow POG member and helped save a neat Puppy.  Thanks to Gavin and everyone who helped with the special gifts.  I would also like to say a special thanks to a POG member by the name of Skip who went over the top on
help and even visited Ric in person.  Great People.

Thanks for posting the photo Ron.Tomorrow is Merts big day as he goes back to vet for more testing.I'm working on a thank you list but i don't want to forget anyone so i hope to include it with the next update on Merts condition.Mert told me he would be elated to serve as POG Mascot if you chose to bestow that high honor on him!Maybe we could have a yearly-(or monthly) mascot,if the higher ups approve. That's one of my favorite pics of him in one of his favorite places-riding the couch!sounds like a good idea to me(couch riding)as i worked a little late tonite. He will lay up there above me on couch and insist on animal planet on tv(they watch it all day!).Randy Kirkbride-thank you so much for the help, the calendar, and the picture of your beautiful german shepherd Nala and lovely Berkshire.I'm framing it and it will hang in my living room.I'm praying for her recovery as well.Yes Ron,-i can't thank Skip and the rest of you guys enough, and again those who i have not personally sent a thank you note to,i haven't forgot-i will,it's just been so hectic lately,i thought he was taking a little step back (bumping into things)but it may just be the meds...Please cross your fingers and toes once tomorrow if you would, as we see the doc's tomorrow(i get to pay a visit to cardiologist myself after Merts Vet visit-Oh Boy!)anyway off to the couch my friends- and i'm very proud to call you my friends,Take Care-Mert,Malcolm, and Ric....

Hello Friends,Well it wasn't a great trip to the Vets as he did bring up the subject of a timeframe for euthinasia if he does not improve-i guess if it has gone too far he will only get worse and suffer, which i would never want.I told the Vet,Dr. Baker (one of my Honda quad customers) that i would not consider putting him down until all options are exhausted or if he is really suffering with no hope of recovery.so i'm a little bummed, although there was a bright spot as he now has regained reaction to the "blink" test the vet gave him at least in the one eye,so in that respect he is improving. He still has trouble with his hindquarters kind of being out of sync with his brain as he has trouble getting up on the couch or bed.I'll keep ya posted as today (and the last few days)have been very busy.i changed jobs to be closer to home and now i can check on him at lunch.besides i've been asking for my overdue vacation since july to have some time to take the dogs up to the mountains(they love it there),but was told we were too busy and they needed me too badly.so now i can take some time as soon as i get the new shop i work at caught up a bit.at least a couple three days.as usual i've rambled on-just wanted to let you know Mert's hangin in there-Thanks, Mert,Malcolm, and Ric

Ric, I finally got back home Wednesday and 11 pm. I drove from San Jose to my place in one shot. 18 hours.... I am still trying to recover. Pheonix was great, I am sorry that you could not make it but understand why you could not, I hope the parts and things i brought for you are what you were expecting....I saw clay yesterday at the races, He was taking pictures and generally enjoying the beautiful day we had.. The track was perfect and the track was fast..... and I managed to win my class.
Please know that we will keep our fingers crossed.... in prayer for you and your dogs, hoping for a full recovery for your beloved Mert. (nice picture by the way)  After all they are his creation as well and he takes notice when even a sparrow falls. Take care my friend!!!

you are so welcome, yes the parts will work just fine. I have a seat after all, well sort of, the seat base is aluminum and has been fixed more than once and is in preatty bad shape. I had thought of fixing it and then making a mold to make a fiberglass replacement, but that is probably alot more than I can really do. but the seat foam is in good shape and getting a new cover should be pretty easy. by the way, when you get around to sending me money don't send the money instead to my friend and your Firstturn, He gave me the Sixday bike a year and a half ago and then when things got tough for me, told me not to worry about paying him, do me  a favor and give him the money, He would not take it from me but he might take it from you. Ron is a great guy and a highly valued friend. you are right about this group they are the best, in a league by themselves, though I must admit there has been very few vintage folks that have not treated me like a long lost friends. While I was at the race in pheonix I lost my wallet and I had so many people looking it was amazing, everyone was so helpful... on sunday afternoon I found it.... I had tucked in a place that I would normally never consider doing and there is was nice and safe.... That was a rough 24 hour period, but I am thankful to have it back, sure made my return trip alot better....
Take care and I am glad that Mert is doing better, I will continue to keep all of you in my prayers....

Ron,Looks like i.o.u-again,still,or more! let me know your needs (as far as parts go)i'm still trying to go thru the mettco stuff and see whats needed for THE replica.Thom-Just from corresponding with Ron Carbaugh, never meeting face to face,i can tell you he has ALWAYS treated me like a brother, that's why i got so upset and couldn't hold my tongue when there was bad words said about him in this forum(but please let's NOT go there-OK!).To further make my point i have entrusted to him my somewhat meager estate of motorcycles, parts, and my tools-(not meager!) for liquidation to help my family out when i go to the big trail in the sky.He did not hesitate and immediately agreed to take care of it for me and my family when i pass on.Just a super guy always ready to help.I told him he WILL have my Penton 250 for doing this-(He refused)so you guys make sure he takes it!This made me feel much better when i had a scare a while back. And one 71 steeltanker will go to POG for the group-that bike was GIVEN to me by a cancer victim to whom i promised i would restore it to its former glory. So as you can tell Ron and I are pretty much on the same page-i consider him a blood brother-partly because of our Honda roots, and mostly because he's one hell of a guy.So yes Thom i will force him to take the money somehow-one way or the other if thats what you want.If you need a seat pan i think i have one-call me.Thanks again Thom-for the favors and also the kind thoughts,.....Ric,Mert,and Malcolm...............

Hi Guys, I feel like the least i can do is keep you guys updated on Mert's condition so here goes-He is still stable with only 2 setbacks-no more seizures, just a wobbliness in his hindquarters and growling at his shadows, etc. If he stays at this state and things don't get any worse, that would be fine by me as long as he doesn't suffer.Though it would be great to have him 100 percent, and he's having everything done to give him a shot to get there.I've sold some non Penton things to cover the "just in case" expenses so there is no real need for any more help-Please,just buy something nice for your Penton(or your dog or even your wife!).Also i need to add Gary Ellis and Ron Corporon to my "guys to thank" list.As long as you guys want to be informed I'll keep you updated as to his condition. Thanks Again and Take Care, Ric,Mert, and Malcolm...................

Hi Guys,Just to update you on Mert(since that's the first thing everyone asks when i talk to them!).He's doing good.Still has a problem with his hindquarters ocassionally,as if his back legs just don't work right sometimes, but we will address that at the next vet visit.Other than that, for the most part i couldn't be more pleased with his progress.I think he's due for next vet appt. on Thursday so i'll keep you guys posted.Thanks,-Ric,Mert,Malcolm......

Hi Guys, I know this is a motorcycle site, and not a dog site but i HAVE to urge anyone who has a dog or other animal and lives in the southwest-ca.,az.,n.m.,tx.,and others to check out this site below regarding the horrible disease my dog Mert has,Valley Fever.i figure if one dog is saved(or kept from going thru the hell that Mert has had to) by a Pogger reading it and helping his pet,it'll be worth the space. Thanks to all who helped/prayed/shared kind thoughts/sent cards/well wishes, and i'll only update you if his condition changes for the better (or worse, god forbid) as i'm sure some of you are tired of hearing of his troubles and we can use the space for m/c issues as intended-(as suggested by an email i received by one unhappy Pogger). All other email i received was very kind and positive-thank you.I never intended to upset anyone or use so much space(i was just going to sell a bike, then you guys took the ball and ran with it).Mert is getting the best possible care, the crisis is averted, and my 250 Penton(and my other projects)still are here where they belong-thanks to you guys,so please just an occassional prayer or kind thought is all that is needed now.I sold some other stuff and will put it away towards his future care, surgery,or whatever. We're looking at 4 to 12 months before he's out of the woods completely, but i'll still let you know periodically how he is(maybe monthly).I owe you at least that.Again we can't thank you enough-Ric,Mert,and Malcolm........ Here's the site for valley fever-if you live out here your pet could have it and you might not know it until it's too late so please take a look!                                             //www.vfce.arizona.edu

my father-in-law got valley fever too, it nearly killed him as well! improperly diagnosed for 9mos. the disease is borne from spores in the desert dust, common to wild land firefighters, (as in my father-in-law's case), farmers, field workers, road builders, etc. anybody that works in a unusually dusty environment.

Yep,Desert racers too!Although any racing i have done has been in Nevada,Baja, and So-Cal;it makes me wonder when out riding how much of these spores I'm inhaling.I heard about a guy who was diagnosed with lung cancer only to find out later it was valley fever. On the valley fever website they say there may be a vaccine in the works. The sooner-the better.Malcolm,(my other golden)is going in next week to be tested to make sure that if he tests positive we can nip it in the bud (before it migrates to his brain if he does have it)by putting him on the meds at that time. But he has no symptoms (Thank God!)so maybe he got lucky at least so far.Had i known about this disease i surely would have thought twice before moving here.Or considered a lightweight scuba type breathing system for racing and for my dogs!Cheers,Ric and co.

Hi Folks,I just thought i'd update you-Mert had a bit of a problem when the vets tried to back him off his seizure meds.No seizures, but he was acting like he was ready for one when i started his phenobarbitol back up.The vet agreed we should try and taper him off more slowly,so we lowered his morning dose and left the nite doses alone. He's back to where he was before the dose change now, tough little bugger that he is.I guess we have to be patient and let the meds do their work. He's still got issues but i cherish each day with him now, even when he's a bit grumpy!Take Care,-Ric,Mert,Malcolm............

Most of us I would imagine are dog owners. Probably the best friend anyone could have. They ask very little and give lots in return. One mans dog is more like everyones friend and we care enuff to want to know.We know if you lose one what it's like and don't want it to happen to soon.

Ric, for some reason I was thinking that Mert was out of the woods... So sorry to hear that he still is having issues. I will go back to praying for you and Mert. If God cares about the sparrow that falls from a tree then he most certainly cares about man's best friend. Take care and pet mert for me.

Thom,So was i because he had been stable and seizure free. You wouldn't believe how helpless you feel when he's laying on the ground convulsing. He had the disease so bad i'm just lucky to still have him here.but he's been good since changing dosage again-so far so good.At this point its a matter of letting the meds do their job while trying to control/avoid seizures. Thanks for the prayers and kind thoughts.Ric

Mert had another seizure last week but has been to the vet and he said one seizure every 2 months is acceptable for how bad he has this disease. It's just hard to watch, but he bounces back from them ok.Thought some of you might want to know.Other than that he's doing great. Thanks for still being concerned you guys.

Ric,
If you ever feel the need for an addition to your anumal kingdom I will gladly UPS my rat terrier. She could never replace any of your animals but is very broken in to 2 cycle motors and plays well with others.[:p] Tom B

You could always move to the NE, we got something up here they call "Cabin fever". It usually happens after the second good snow storm. It usually goes away on it's own in April. Might be a good change.;)

P.S.-if anyone knows how to move/start this post under general discussion please let me know-Thanks

Ric, this post has been in this forum so long, if you move it nobody will know where to find it. Let it run, we understand.
House in the pines would be nice, I'm looking for a little lake front, with a couple of acres for a little privacy.
