Title: Source for 6V Headlamp
Post by: KJDonovan on February 05, 2006, 09:38:12 AM
All,

I have recently noticed that a few different vendors (Al B, Terry E and others) now have reproductions of the Preston Petty style front number plates and headlamp holders.  I am anxious to pick up a couple for my bikes but before I layout the cash I was wondering if anyone knows of a source for the actual 6V headlamp to put inside of it?  I have an old motoplat ignition that is 6V and do not want to end up with a nice front plate and no headlamp.

Thanks In Advance,

Kevin

Kevin,
Check out this posting from last year. I was looking for a beam for the Preston Petty headlight as well. I followed Paul's lead and they work great. Any auto parts store will have them:

"If you need a sealed beam for the Preston Petty headlight, I found the Wagner 4411 tractor light, 12 volt, with no hi/low beam, fits perfect. A while back some guys were looking for a 12 volt replacement."

If you are not are dead set on using 6v sealed beams, the 12v tractor sealed beam available at most auto part stores (as suggested by Chakka) will work on your 6v Motoplat....Please understand that it barely glows at idle, but shines under power.

I've been using one for years on my 77 GS6.

Better advice is to use the 12v bulb as when you gas the bike with a 6vbulb on a 6v system and no voltage regulator, kiss the element goodby;)

Kip,

Is the same true when choosing between a 6V and 12V tail light?
