Title: Need fenders for 79 MC80
Post by: 79mc80 on March 08, 2006, 01:18:28 PM
I am looking for fenders for my 1979 MC 80 175cc KTM.
Stock one are still on the bike but are showing their age.  Bike still has the original tires on it so I am trying to maintain the originality of the bikes appearance.  I am told DC Plastic may be of help but can't seem to find them on the web.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Tom Brosius has nice fiberglass replacement fenders for earlier bikes and the side panels and headlight masks for some models available, but I am not aware that he has the later models fenders yet. DC Plastics advertises on eBay as well as their own site. Type in "KTM fender" on eBay, or "KTM Side" and DC Plastics listing for reproductions that were made from nice original and/or NOS fenders and side panels that myself, Phil Ketchum, and others have sent to be reproduced. The front fenders are not quite finished yet, but Don just listed the GS rear fender. The costs are around $ 50.00 plus shipping. Mike

Thanks to you all!  I did contact DC Plastic and they have a rear fender, and said I could use their Tony D for a front.  I'm not real sure what a Tony D looks like, so I will go out on the web and have a look.  I have been away from this type of bike for a while and all I really remember is the Preston Petty line of plastics.

I did not realize there was a fender with the number plates molded in, I assume this fender is a rear unit?

Forgive my being somewhat obtuse at the present time!

Best regards to everyone!

Ron, the way I understand it, is that some time in mid 1980 the number plates were changed from the side panels to the rear fender and continued to be part of the rear fender in 1981 and possibly some of the later year models. Mike

Hi Ron,
I have a picture of a 79 MC80 125 which shows the number plates as part of the side panels and not on the rear fender. My guess is that your 175 would be the same as the 125. I'll be glad to forward the pic of the 125 to you if you send me an email.

There is also a bolt on numberplate shown on my 79 Chassis parts manual that attaches to the GS rear fender, and it may have carried over to 1980 until the change over to the integral rear fender with molded in numberplate. The MC models used the side panel numberplate design until that change some time in 1980 from what I have seen. Mike
