Title: Stripe on Airbox / Exhaust Covers
Post by: Chakka on March 19, 2006, 10:23:18 AM
Has anybody tried striping tape from an autobody store to replicate the white stripe found around the yellow number plate? I just finished painting a few pairs and don't dare to put more masking down for fear of lifting my new fabulous topcoat. While it may not be original it seems a fairly simple way to go. Some originals I have seen almost look handpainted, that could be an option as well if I can control my hand.

Go to one those next day sign shops. They will have a machine that will produce a vinyl application to the exact contour of your plate. Plus they can produce extras if you need them.

I used a pre-printed background (heavy vinyl) on the exhaust side of my 250. On the airbox cover, I used yellow paint with a vinyl tape stripe. So far it's held up but it's still early. Maybe a little clear coat will beef up the stripe.

I like the idea of the sign shop approach but it would seem that the vinyl would have to be fairly thin to adapt to the abrupt angles of the cover. Just my take.[:p]

The vinyl is custom cut to the shape of your plate.

I tried to use the pinstripe tape but i was not happy with the results ... I did two Husky tanks with an airbrush and the results were terrific thats the way I am going on my 2 Sixdays .....BT
