Title: rust covered front fork springs - 70 Steeltank
Post by: lksseven on April 16, 2006, 09:31:51 PM
I'm tearing down my '70 Steeltanker for a complete resto, and the front fork springs are quite covered in rust, which is heart breaking (the forks themselves are unmarked on the outside).  Can I just use rust remover on them and still use them, or do I need to replace?   If use them, after rust removal, how else can I treat/coat them to restore/protect?

Thanks, guys!

Larry,
In this case I would just bead blast them and coat tehm in oil till your ready to reassemble.  They should do fine unless they are rusted almost in two pieces??  Glad you are starting on the Steel Tanker Project.

Thanks Ron!  I wouldn't have thought to have these springs bead blasted.  No, the rust seems to be mainly surface - I don't think it's rusted into the muscle of the metal.
