Title: Penton Logo
Post by: Rain Man on June 12, 2006, 08:54:36 PM
Yesterday I was @ the Southwick Nationals (MASS.) along with a few 1000 other enthusiasts and saw something that was a bit appauling, to say the least.  I recognize the graphic design on the head of this page as being a Penton logo, and it has been since I was a kid back in the early seventies.
I saw this fella with the logo on his tee shirt and said "hey I recognize that, its the Penton logo".  Well I was shocked when I see the "Racer X "  Logo right smack dab in  the middle of  the penton logo.
Alwyas some SOB throwing a spanner into the whole gear box :(

Ray,

I know that to some, it is blasphemy to associate the Penton logo with anything else, but in this case, there is a mutual appreciation between the Combs family and John Penton. JP is absolutely amazed that the Combs family has been so involved with motorcycle sport and he appreciates their work. And the Combs family is very appreciative of JP because he allowed them to use the Hi Point (actually High Point) name for the raceway at Mt. Morris, PA. They also are very respectful of JP's riding accomplishments, and that's why there is a John Penton GNCC event.

Hi Dane,  I don't know much about the "racer X " thing, it kinda   new to me, but the NorthEast has always been a bit behind the times anyway. (possibly still a good thing !!)
does the Combs family own/operate racer X ??
I guess I should just Log on to their website, seeing I have a whole bunch of their stickers here with the addy on it.
It was just kind of a freaky eye opener

BTW; there wasent 1-   2 stroke on the track !!

Ray,

Davey Combs, Dave and Rita's youngest son, started RacerX as a local newspaper I can't remember exactly when. And it has reached the top of the pile today. And of course, the family started Racer Productions, which promotes the High Point National at Mt. Morris, PA and the Steel City National at Delmont, PA. And of course, they got MX Sports off the ground, which is who puts on the Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn's.

In case you didn't know, Dave Sr. passed away from cancer, some time back, and Rita took the rains and still guides lots of the operations today.

The oldest son Tim, is more of the grunt guy who gets his hands dirty at the events and their daughter, Carrie Jo, is an attorney and is married to Jeff Russel, former KTM National Enduro Champion, and son of the owner and promoter at Sunday Creek in southeast Ohio.

Dane, I checked out Racer X web site today and was amazed !!   I thought they were a riders gear warehouse sorta thing.
They had a picture of MX AMA #7 mistake that led to MX AMA #4 winning moto #2 @ South Wick on Sunday thus taking the overall !!
Just a matter of seconds! wow
Great photography, and right up to date information.
This is definately a cool publication of the US racing net work,
I wish I had checked this out a few years back.
