I've been experiencing clutch slipping in higher gears at speed. I know the adjustment is on the actuating arm but I was also wondering about the basket itself. Should the bolts be tightened to a specific ft/lb? I know in the early model motors there was supposed to be 3-4 threads showing, but this is an '81 motor. Any guidance is appreciated! Thanks.

If the clutch is similar to the newer KTM's, the torque on the pressure plates bolts is only like 60 inch lbs. Have you checked the metal plates to make sure they are not warped? I had trouble with a earlier clutch and that is what the problem turned out to be.

Dave,
Have you tried the procedure in Service Bulletin #24?
Here is a link to it just in case you have not seen it:

Dave,
You might want to visit the following site. Their primary focus is the 495, but you can also find a lot of information for 78 modesl and up.

Dave,
Here's a good link I found for you on the http://www.495mxbikes.com site concerning blueprinting your clutch basket for a nice smooth action.

Sorry for taking so long to get back with all of you........it's been one of those weeks!
Rod. I can't find any info on specific tightening specs on the '81. I don't know if the modern is the same. I did find a couple of warped metal plates and replaced them.
Phil and Tony. I looked at the basket last night and it is smooth. Looks like someone may have beaten me to it.
Raymond. I have been running Specto 80W but tried Maixima 75 LTM after reading that it may help with slipping.....it didn't.
John. I'll do the procedure mentioned in the bulletin tonight.
Thanks to all. It's great to know that there is so much knowledge just a click away.
