POG, Can anyone tell me the part number for a 1980 250 exhuast or better still is it the same pipe as a 1978 MC5 250 [?] Lastly where is the actual part number stamped on the pipe as I can only find 54 stamped on mine.

Hi CHris,
The part number for the 1980 250 is 540.05.170.900 and the part number for the Muffler end is 540.05.071.900 unless it is a GS, then the part number for the Silencer is 550.05.071.700. I don't have the part number for a 1978, so I can't tell you if they were the same or not, but I don't think so.

Thanks Donny, I've got the part number for a 78 here, it is 54.05.170.800. Is the full number stamped anywhere on the pipe itself as I can't find it anywhere, all I can find is KTM 54 and I'm sure it's a 1980 pipe I have and not a 78.

Thanks again Donny
Cheers

I believe the 78 & 79 are the same. They have a built in silencer about 2 1/2" in diameter that runs from under the seat to just past the side cover. In 80 or 81 they went to a bolt on silencer. Don't take that as set in stone but I have had some pipe troubles in the last year and that is what I have observed.

Thanks Dennis, Chances are it might fit O.K. and it's just the silencer that will be different.

I have an early 1980 that I do not have an original design exhaust pipe for, but I compared my 1978 MC5 pipe to one Phil Ketchums 1979 and his 1980 250's and they looked identical to the naked eye, however, when I put my 1978 MC5 stock pipe on the 1980 it was very hard to get all of the mounts to line up. I also put my brothers 1978 MC5 250 pipe on my 1978 MC5 250 and it was the same story, a very tight fit to get all the mounts in, so it seems that they may have varied slightly from bike to bike as far as fit.
I would really like to have a stock 1980 pipe for my bike, with the built in silencer. Mike
