In this picture the top panel fits the three '79's I have, but the bottom one does not. You can see in the 2nd picture the one in question has two mounting holes in front, but the 1979 MC80's and GS80's side panels I've seen have one mounting hole.

I'm pretty sure it's not for a '78, 80' or '81.
The pair in question for sale, are made from plastic. The LH side has never been used, and the RH side looks like it's only been used for a day or two, with no damage at all. Right side has an original KTM background in black.

The first one with the yellow number plate is a 1979 panel and the other three are all 1980 125 ONLY panels.
The 1980 175/250/420 panels have a longer narrow front section like the 1979 one you have.
In 1979 they only had one version which fit all 125/175/250/420 bikes. Mike

I could swear at one time I had a bike with side panels like those vented, three hole models pictured. But I know I've never had a '80 125.
Did some of the 1979 side panels come with vent slots, and some without. All the '79 panels I've seen have NO enlongated vent slots.

All of my 79 & 80 panels have had 2 holes only, like the one with the yellow number plate. In fact, my chassis parts manuals only show 2 holes on each panel, regardless of year or size. There are only 2 places that the panels are held on except that the top edge is held on by the seat. The chassis parts book shows the 79 not having any slots and the 80 with slots, but I have read from other POG members that late 79 bikes may have also used the slotted panels. Anything is possible. It is the "V" shape of the forward section that determines the panel is for a 125, not the slots. The 175/250/420 panels are interchangeable between years, but the 1980 125 panels are for one application only and I do not know if they will fit up to any other frame tab or bracket correctly. Mike

My brother and I own a 79 125 that had slotted side panels on it when we bought it at M-O a few years back. The bike seemed to be pretty stock.

Hi gang,
I've owned a few '79/'80 KTMs. Mike is correct about the 125 panels. If I remember correctly, my '79 came with Bilstein shocks (non reservior)and solid panels. I understood the panels were slotted to help cool the reserviors of the Ohlins or Bilsteins. I also believe the panels were a different shape because the frame was smaller than the 250 and 420. I hope this helps.

They look just like the side panels on my 1980 125 with the new style RV motor. I'm not sure that they will fit a '79 because the tube that the panel fits up against is different from '79 and '80. In '79 there was a separate tube welded in place and in '80 the tube extends all the way from the front with a bend in the middle ending up at a slightly different position & angle. So I believe that it's square shape front of panel for '79 and V shape for '80 & '81 ('82 GS too) for all sizes of bikes.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies and help. After further investigation this is what I think I've learned - The second hole towards the front means nothing, it was added for who knows what reason - and they are the style for some 1980 model.
But here's what's funny - on my 2nd post up the line I said I've never owned a '80 125. Guess what - I have a 1980 125 at my shop...that's a DUH ! on my part. [B)]
But they don't fit that bike....not even close. I'm going to guess now they're for some other '80 model. Well anyway, it's not a big deal.
Anyone care to buy a 1980 KTM 125 basket case ???
