I have been plagued with a hard starting 400 when hot, since I bought it new in 1977. Cold, it's a 2 kick start.....tickle the stock Bing until it overflows, open the choke and it starts right up. Hot is another story! It runs great but if I ever stall it out, it sometimes takes 20 minutes to restart....then it blubbers for a minute until then clears up.
Any ideas?
Are you shutting petcocks off between rides?Float setting sounds rich or ring worn in your float needle, check vent tubes?Remember two strokes like rich to start cold!Rich when hot means load up time!Does it ever back fire when you kick it?Jay:D
How often do you run it thru the gears and clean it out?Doe's it do this after you lug it around? How often do you put a new plug in it?Try a new plug when it stalls?first shut the fuel off before installing new plug, kick it a few times with the killbutton held in and with no plug in head?See if any fuel vapor shoots out?Put new plug in bike? Good plug NGK B8HS (medium heat range) and with the fuel shut off try starting? If it stalls first time, take the plug back out dry with a propane torch put it back in hott!hold throttle wide open with choke off and fuel still off!If ignitions good it should fire rite off and hold open throttle till it cleans out then turn petcocks back on!When it starts to lean out or pickup idle that means engine is leaning out definately have fuel turned on if it starts doing that fast! You don't want to hurt your motor! You could need some of Al B's petcock rebuild kits? They might not be shutting off completely?A slow drip after a few days with a bad float needle could cause a problem?Theres a small allenhead I believe it takes a 4mm wrench? Its in the bottom of the crank area, sometime after the fuels been shut off for awhile cold or hot when having trouble or not?Pull it out and see how much fuel runs out of it?Theres a nylon or a copper small gasket too so don't loose it before reinstalling?helps if you spray some brake parts cleaner around area before wrenching!Hope maybe this drill of confusion helps you and other Penton Riders? Most of you have done this too many times!LOL!Jay!Make sure you put crank allenhead back it tight before firing up!If not this can get exciting!LOL![:o)]
Steve watch leaving this new fuel in your tank?this new fuel has additives that eatup fiberglass penton tanks?Don't leave it in there and let it ruin your tank!We all should probally start coating them?Jay!:D
Thanks for the advice Jay....I'll try all of the above.
Steve have you figured your problem out yet?Jay:)
Well..sort'a...I spoke to Bobby Lucas and he gave me some advice...mostly float adjustments.
Thanks for remembering.......
New floats would be a great start and a rubber tipped float needle? If you have a dietary scale weigh the floats you have now?If they weigh more than 10grams there bad?New ones are around 6 grams I think? You may want to check?:)
