Title: alum/mag hub prep for paint?
Post by: imported_n/a on December 01, 2006, 07:19:20 PM
POG, just had my hubs blasted. i've had good luck with cast coat aluminum paint on perches, triple clamps, etc. and plan to use it for the hubs, it's very sturdy stuff. question - what, if any type of prep should i do before painting them? clean with mild solvent, etc. to remove dust, excess media or not? thanks,

Hi Chris, have used CC DE1650 Duplicolor on both clamps and TT's, and overcoated with Plasticoat #229 clear, have had no peeling effects, I wiped all parts down with laquer thinner and hit with a little air.
But as you know, there is always a gamble. Best in a mild temperature, when parts and paint are stabilized.

Chris,
go back about a dozen posts about "spray can CMF green". Ron has a post concerning prep. May help.

thanks guys, good stuff, especially on the weather conditions, it's super humid here in Florida right now. i'll have to wait a couple days 'til that cool front comes through and dries things out to paint. i'm gonna rinse them off first with some lacquer thinner.

Lew good point! PPG makes a wax/grease remover prep.
Thanks,
