Has anyone come up with a source for buying blocks of foam to make motorcycle seats from? Short of going to a junk yard and buying a larger seat to cut up, what has anyone found? Thanks Ted
Don Clarehout of DC Plastics told me that he knew of a source so we could have GS6 and MC5 seat foam made, but I haven't gotten the information yet. I will try to call him tomorrow and email you my findings. Mike

Ted, I was able to use some closed cell white polyethylene foam that was used as a packaging material at the lumber yard I work for. The foam was 1/4in thick and I used contact cement to laminate it to suit my needs. It was time consuming but fun and effective. After I got it close to how I wanted it to look I used a belt sander with as coarse a grit as I could find to shape it. It worked great and was cheap(free). I did have some shrinkage for about six months (it takes a long time for all that contact cement to fully dry), but was not really noticeable. I would think that if one was willing to pay for this stuff you could find a source for thicker foam to start with and that would make the job less time consuming. The nice part about using the thin sheets is that if I needed to build up the seat in some places and not others it only happened a quarter inch at a time. The other cool thing about this stuff is that it's light as air and it's very firm. I'd try to find a place that deals with packing supplies and see what they charge for a roll of this stuff. Gavin
There is a good topic with pictures and brand names for foam on the Vstrom forum. I am not sure about sources but you could Google it.

I spoke to Don today and although he didn't have the seat foam supplier information readily at hand, he promised to get it to me. I will post any information that I receive. Mike

Have fun and the day will take care of it's self.
Try Rick's Upholstery, 541-298-6936. He claims as long as you have a "good" seat pan, he can do the rest. I haven't used him yet, but I am going to. Nice guy.
I just got the seat foam information from Don Clarehout of DC Plastics earlier this week, but haven't contacted him about the specifics yet. His name is Ledon Smith. He can be reached at
