There's a 250 Sachs bike on ebay. It's rough, missing the tank and seat, and the engine is stuck. Looking at the frame I think that a CMF Penton tank would fit nicely.
I see people mention interest in these bikes from time to time. If it were in my neck of the woods I might make a bid on it. I've seen great bikes that started from less.

I believe the bike is a Hercules.

Any idea what year/model Herc this may be?
chris "cowhouse"
Just guessing on the year, probably 77-78-79??
Rocket
Any way to find out for sure??
Here is a pic of my 77 hercules 250GS. http://tinyurl.com/2r92au
You could ask the seller for the engine and frame numbers to find out the year and model.
Paul (s0cal)
Yep, It is a 1976 Hercules GS250/7a. It doesn't have the front engine mounts that the 1977 does. Pretty rough shape.
I noticed that Carl Cranke is bidding on this bike also.

Actually it's me, not the real carl cranke. Just a fan who used his moniker for my eBay username. I bid on a 250 Hare Scrambler last year and signed up for eBay at the spur of the moment. Seemed appropriate when I was bidding on that nice old Penton last year!
I noticed thrownchain didn't waste any time outbidding me on this Hercules![:p]
Sounds like you're a lot closer to this bike in Missouri than I am up here in Ohio. Good luck with the bike!

cowhouse, actually if I win I have to drive through Ohio to get there
as I am in upstate NY. [^]
As Homer Simpson would say, "Doh!"[:0]
If you win the Herc, you gonna resto or parts it?
cowhouse
If one of you guys get it I could probably help with picking it up. A friend of mine drives by there every day on his way to work.
Dennis Jones
If I get it, it will definately be a resto project.
Dennis [Dr.Wassel] you could bring it to M/O for me, like the Wassel for you? Keep watching, you never know. thx Dan

What are you talking about ? The Ebay bike has no silencer or spark arrestor on it.
We used the stock silencers back then and if we needed to add a spark arrestor we used the 3" Super Trapp with about 8 discs and the sound diffuser . Not hard to install. Just remove the silencer cap cone and use an extension nut to join the Super Trapp to the exhaust.

Does the 250 and 125 share the same tank? Any parts in common with other brands?[^]
Thanks Dwight

No real common parts. 1976 SWM uses the 7 speed. Gas tanks are the same. Wheels are the same on the 125 and 175. Same on the 250 and 350.
Bottom ends are the same on the 175, 250, and 350.
There are a LOT of missing parts on this bike. Does the engine even turn over ? Does it fire ?

According to the description, the motor doesn't turn over. The front end is in good shape, but overall the whole thing needs vast quanities of TLC. There's still seven days on it yet, so alot can happen in that time. Wish me luck. thx Dan
in case that anyone here wins the auction, i could supply new NOS seats and new NOS gas tanks, as a lot of other spares for the sachs/ hercules enduros from 1976 to 1978. i bought the stock from swiss importer recently.
regards Dr.2Stroke
Good to know, is it a big deal to import parts to the US?[^]
I was going through the pics of this bike and the rear brake backing plate has Sachs moulded into it. Does this change the diagnosis??
Any word yet on that "Sachs" molded onto the rear brake backing plate? Did the Hercs have that back in the day?

PS: Hey thrownchain, I noticed you've still got the winning bid.;)
PPS: Does anyone recall a posting (I think it was on the POG site) showing a step-by-step, photo-by-photo, top and bottom end resto of a 70-something Sachs motor on a Hercules???? It might have been Clasen who posted, but I've been checking and can't find it. Guess I should've bookmarked it ...
Yeah, I'm still winning the bid. I see your in there testing the waters too, wondering how deep they are?[}:)]
Do you know how long ago that post on the motor rebuild may have been?
I'll take a trip on the search engine and see if I can help you find it. Dan
You guys are funny. Sachs owned the Hercules Werkes that built 3 brands. Depending on when and where they were being shipped and sold changed the marque. They were sold in the USA by all 3 brands at some point. In 1966-67 the were sold here as HERCULES. 1968-70 as SACHS. 1971-73 as DKW . 1975-1978 as HERCULES (again). 1977-78 they sold a very few of the rare SACHS GP250 and GP200, engines based on the 7 speed Sachs engine but they were 5 & 6 speeds although they could be converted to 7 speeds. Frank Stacy raced one for a while. They were always sold in Germany as Hercules. I believe in Italy as DKW. The seven speeds were always sold in the USA as HERCULES.

If one of you guys wins the bike and needs help storing, arranging shipping, etc., I live fairly close to Lees Summit and could help out. Phast Phil Ketchum lives even closer and I'm sure between the two of us we could figure about anything out.
Jeff DeBell
Dwight, there's always someone out there that knows more a brand than others, but you are confirming that the bike is a Hercules?? That's basically what we were after. thx Dan[^]

Absolutely, it is a GS2501/7a Hercules of 1976 model year, in need of ALL body work, muffler and what ever that poor motor needs.

Thanks for the info, still a good starting point. [^]
Hey cowhouse!! How high are you willing to go?? [isn't a cowhouse a barn?] I just bumped the price again, but I'm at my limit.[:p]
Jeepers Creepers! If I spent that much on a project anything the Mrs would have me sleeping out in the garage next to my Husky. Which, I suppose, wouldn't be too bad considering how much I love the smell of Bel-Ray and WD-40:D
Thanks for the info Dwight. The closest I got to Hercs in my youth was when I saw you guys flying by me while I was a young lad watching you race them during the 2-Day Qualifier at Fort Hood, Texas.[8)]
Yes, thrownchain, a cowhouse I suppose is a barn. OK, OK, it obviously is a barn! But I'm actually referring to the Cowhouse Creek that runs through Fort Hood (my boyhood initiation into all things enduro/isdt/off road goodness). Our club there also put on an annual 100 mile Cowhouse Enduro. How's zat for obscure references?![:p]
Cowhouse don't want to be in no doghouse. So I say to you, "Good luck with the Herc purchase and post some pictures when you get the resto going." Oh ya, that photo-by-photo resto I was referring to earlier, I think I stumbled across it sometime around Christmas.
I can spend that much on a project, [no mrs.], long time single parent
. I went out and bought a digital camera so I can take photos of all the bikes, so I can track progress. I'll have a nice digital "album" of all the work.
I did a different type of "cowhouse enduro", milking cows. Twice a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year. For 30 yrs. How's that?
I looked high and low for the post you were looking for, no luck. sorry. thx Dan[^]
*&^%$, there's another bidder in the game, may have to lay low for a couple of days to keep the price reasonable, [maybe].[^]
I hope you get the bike. I'm looking forward to seeing how that restoration goes for you. Checked out a couple of very nice fully restored Hercs at the Mid-Ohio this year, and they were fantastic.
Milking cows, eh? That sounds like hard work. Being a big fan of the cow juice, I salute you! My coffee just wouldn't be the same without it:D
I'll try to find that resto I mentioned and, hopefully if I can find it, I'll send you the link. I remember that one of the final photos showed the completed bike along with a couple other Hercules resto projects. I'll keep looking.
Is this what you're looking for ->
http://www.mxbikes.com/bikes/ktm/restore1/
I think the step by step Herc restore you are looking for is Herr Speedy's,the Hercules Master. It's on the Vinduro website under the title ...Story of the 76 gs175 7a then and now, or something to that effect and its an excellent story/pictures.Maybe look for Speedy's files on the Vinduro site...........Ric
Went searching for it but it's gone and he's started another gs250-7a found-i think.Whenever Speedy posts something Hercules restoration wise i try and save it on my computer.I'll search my computer for it.Maybe go thru December posts of files downloaded to Vinduro by clasenca-or whoever gets the bike ask Speedy real nice, cause whoever ends up with that bike you are gonna need him!
ric emmal
Very nice site, thx for posting it. [^]
Dats the one, sixdazed. Thanks for finding it. I was starting to worry that maybe I was hallucinating. And thanks rob w for the ktm resto link. Man, you guys are way better than google:D
cowhouse
Did somebody on this site end up with this bike?? Just wondering.
Not me. I dropped out early. I take it you didn't get it either?
cowhouse
No, I quit at $350. I hope it finds a good home. It was good fun bantering with you. Dan[^]
Good find on that Sachs rebuild page. Nicely done.
