Title: broken petcock
Post by: Jay Saxon on October 11, 2001, 01:19:02 PM
when I replaced the pipe on my '73 125/6B recently, I broke the brass fitting that joins the petcock to the gas line on the left side. Is this replacable? I've seen alot of posts requesting petcocks. If I can't repair mine, any leads on a replacement?
Thanks All!

Jay

I think you and I are in the same boat. I still don't have a definite lead other than one person offering to PERHAPS sell me one of two that he has for a spare tank.

This petcock shortage seems to be the achilles heel of the Penton marque. I ride this bike so if there is a non-stock solution, I'm interested. I can live with the shame of being unoriginal if the gas gets from the tank to the Bing.
I also had another question. Last time out I threw my chain and noticed some serious play in the sprocket carrier. After disassembly, I confirmed that the inner bearing was shot. Apparently I didn't notice soon enough because the bad bearing ovaled out the carrier. Is there a way to fix this (boring the hole to fit a larger bearing O.D. with the same I.D.) One friend ( a working moto mechanic) suggested removing the bearing and setting the new one in an epoxy metal substitute. Any better ideas?

I don't believe the epoxy substitute will carry the thrust load. New cases for you, buddy.

I recently broke the brass fitting out of a petcock.  Actually, it appears that they are pressed into the petcock.  I cleaned it with carb spray and used JB Quick.  Works fine now.

Guys the incident with the case brought something to mind. We started getting case guards with our Pentons in the early 70's. Its just a piece of strap bent to take the blow of a thrown chain instead of the engine case. Maybe someone has some out their we can get a pattern from if they are not still available. They should be easy to make. I know I will have one one way or the other on my Six-days.
Doug , Larry any ideas?

Wow, you guys are scarey! I was talking about the sprocket carrier on the rear wheel.
With all the talk of new cases, I feel almost lucky to have the problem I do. I did chip a piece out of the case cover. but everything else up front seems OK. The strapping to protesct the case sounds good. I'd love to find some available.

Jay: sorry I was so goofy - I thought you were talking about the bearing in the case where the countershaft slips through - as Rosanna Rosanna-Danna would say - "never mind!"

Jay,
A new case is the best solution. you could use JB weld or some other epoxy. it might work . The case could have hairline cracks you cant see or just be worn oblong. To machine out the case for a bigger bearing would weaken the case . but that might work ok. the down side to the bigger bearing is the cost to do it if you cant do it yourself.
i think the case is magniesium.
Anyone else with another idea, or see some holes in the suggestions on here.
