Title: Greetings from Italy
Post by: mau10 on March 04, 2007, 03:00:07 PM
Hello,
I'm Maurizio and I live in Rome. My english isn't very good, excuse me. I'm 49 years old and when I was a boy I had
a ktm 250. But the genesis of Ktm  is Penton, so three years ago I bought a Penton six days 125 1970.
This is my Penton when I bought it:

And this is my penton after a conservative restoration:

I have a doubt about the taillight (Hella): is it original?

Today I talked with Paul Danik and I'm  happy to know now a driver of the Penton Trophy team at Camerino.
Greetings from Rome
Maurizio

Maurizio,
Welcome to the Penton Owners' Group board. I am one of John Penton's nephew's, and I was on the Penton Trophy Team in Camerino as well.

That tail light was used as an original light on the Pentons, but I can't tell you exactly what years.

Hi Dandk, are you Dane Leimbach?

Maurizio,

Welcome to the Penton Owners Group message board, I am sure I speak for many when I say we are really happy to have you be a part of this group.

Dane is in fact Dane Leimbach and you will see several others who rode the ISDT in Camerino on this message board.

Please tell us a little about your Penton and where you ride.  Are there groups who ride the vintage bikes in Italy?  Are there many Pentons?

Thanks
Paul

Maurizio:

Welcome to a great group of Penton Owners....you wouldn't happen to know the outfit in Italy which remanufactures the pipes and such...I am in need of a 73 250 Harescrambler original pipe and don't seem to have any luck getting in contact with them to see about a purchase.

Any assitance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Paul, I think there are about one hundred Penton bikes in Italy. There is a Vintage National Championship in Italy, it is named GR5. Our message boards are:

Hi Victor, don't warry, I'll help you. What's the number of the article you want in this link?

Hi Fosterboy, the Mr Dorino Pillon's Penton/KTM shop is in Vicenza:

Maurizio:

I am inquiring about the following exhaust pipe;

ARTICOLO 43  Marmitta COMPLETA con terminale per KTM 250 tipo "giallo"

It is for a 1973 KTM/Penton Harescrambler with a Gold/Yellow Tank and I need the complete pipe including the bracket which attaches to the end of the frame.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Cost to supply, delivery cost to Southern California and delivery schedule and time to supply schedule are questions I could use your help on.

Thanks.

Maurizio,
You may be of assistance as translator to members here in need of KTM stripes and decals, as made by Paolo "FrankZappa". Here are samples: http://rugginose.forumfree.net/?t=12666410 .

I've used Alta-BabelFish.com to translate, which worked fine, and Paolo's stripes and decals are priced right as well as good quality, he takes PayPal and is a very nice guy to boot. His e-mail is [email protected]

Hi Fosterboy,  Franzkappa hasn't a shop, but he is a vintage ktm fan like us (he is crazy for '70-'80 ktm, he has about one hundred old ktm).  If you need same  spare parts ('70-'80 years), you tell me and I'll say it to Franzkappa. I asked him for Victor's pipe too, he has that pipe but he doesn 't sell it. I bought from him many spare parts for my ktm 125 model year 1976.

Victor,
for the complete pipe (articolo 43) with the bracket (articolo 61) the price is 400 euro. The shipping cost  with insurance is about 150 euro for a 10 kg package (I don't know the exact weight of the pipe).
The pipe is ready.

Maurizio:  Hello and welcome to the POG.  I am in need of a set of front fork rubber boots for my 1969 Penton.  They are the Ceriani style that cover all of the fork tube from the leg to the stem.  Yours has the short cover but the ones I need are accordian style and about 8" long.  Do you know of a source?  Thank you, Ted Atkinson

I move that Al Buehner gets together with Paolo "FrankZappa" and maybe with Dorino Pillon and becomes distributor for all the KTM-branded and related stuff that Al doesn't carry.

Sure, it may be a sin to mix KTM-branded stuff with a Penton Parts supplier, but then again I think lots of us have late 70's/early 80's KTMs, as extensions of Penton interests, and it didn't seem to offend any Penton-KTM dealers back in the day to evolve with the brand.

Plus, it's easiest via Al and would rather support him to ensure he stays in business for years to come for all the good he does. Can I get a 2nd on that? Go Al.

Maurizio:

I appreciate your efforts and information.  I am considering the pipe purchase and wonder how we can go forward, if I choose to go with it.

I am meeting with my local welder to check about what fixing up my pipe will be...I calculate about $720 US or so if I buy ine from Italy.

I will do some thinking and budget review and get back to you.

I truely appreciate your effort and will decide shortly.

I would love to have Al able to purchase items from PILLON DORINO, but I suspect that the strength of the Euro plus freight, duties, etc. and then add a profit margin of X percent would put items beyond the prices most are willing to pay.

Given the prices Mau10 was quoted on a pipe at 400 Euros + freight comes to $722.  Add in duties, etc. & profit, puts you at $800+.  Now add in inventory costs & money tied up in parts for some extended time and the price goes higher.  Pipes for $800 - $900 are worth more than a lot of bikes that need them.

At those prices I would think we could interest a manufacturer in the US to produce these items.  I doubt that a manufacturer is willing to produce parts to be readily available. But, there are pipe fabricators in the US that do reproduce pipes only with a minimum quantity order.

No offense to anyone, just my manufacturing/engineering mind at work.

Hey Poggers,

We also need to look at the Continent East of California for parts. The exchange rate is currently in our favor, and the cfaftsmanship is second to non.

My employer has such a contact and is currently working on KTM 250 clutch plates and a couple of other items of interest for me. My problem is getting a good enough sample to reproduce in the first place. Items like MC5 pipe silencers and rear shrouds with tips would be easy to make and cheap after tooling costs, if there is a need. Mike

I was thinking more Buehner Supply stocking some of the array of KTM-branded decals and tank stick-ems, seat covers, etc needed for restorations. Costs about $7 a pop and 3 weeks waiting for mailing from Italy, after you get around the language barrier. Cost from Paolo is comparable (sometimes less) than similar stuff from the US. Would guess he'd sell a small suitcase-full to Al at wholesale to leave some retail profit in there.

Maurizio,

After the opening ceremony for the 1974 ISDT in Camerino, a number of us Team Penton riders were walking around and talking with other riders when an Italian rider came up to me and seemed interested in my Team USA outfit.  He had on a rather interesting jacket and we decided to trade.  I still have his jacket and it has a club name and logo on it.  It says, Costa Volpino Moto Club, have you ever heard of that club?

Thanks
Paul

Maurizio,

I am saddened to hear of the loss of Carlo. I would like to send you the jacket so you can do what is proper with it, maybe it will bring some cheer in a time of sadness.  Please send me your address at my email and I will ship the jacket to you.  [email protected]

I looked in my program from Camerino and see that Carlo rode an Ossa 250, he also rode an Ossa 250 in the 1973 USA event, he won a gold medal in the USA, do you know how he did in Camerino?

Hey Mau, benvenuto sul sito del POG (welcome on POG website)e complimenti per il successo ottenuto dalla moto e dai Tuoi scritti ( and best wishing for the success of your bike pics and your writing notes). Credo che Tu mi abbia letto anche su rugginose, Ti avevo risposto riferendomi al Falk giallo ( I believe you read my post also on the rugginose web, where I answered you about a question regarding a yellow Falk fender). Ciao.

Paolo,
ho sempre apprezzato i tuoi interventi su rugginose  (I have always appreciated your participations on "rugginose" message board), in particolare le tue foto dei raduni Penton (in particular your photos of the Penton meetings).
I'm restoring a Monark now, I need of the decalcs and the knee pads and the yellow monark color code too, but the vintagemonark message board's administrator, his bikes are on Vmx magazine, doesn't answer me) .

TO: MAU10...

My name is Mark Holloway and I see from you post, you're having a hard time reaching me. The reason is that my mail servers are set to reject all mail from Italy due to the high volume of SPAM that comes from there. What I will do next week is open up ITALY to enable my mail servers to receive messages from Italy. Send your message to [email protected]. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'm always fighting spam and currenly only allow mail from the US, Australia, England, Germany and of course, Sweden. :)

It is almost 35 years since we rode across that swamp on those pallets, but I sure do remember that section.  I rode on number 81 in that event, much earlier than Carlo.  Carlo overcame this situation and still won a Gold Medal, great job.
