Hi Guys,
I am interested in the '77 GS400 on eBay in Texas..but I wanted to know if anyone was bidding on it from here? I like the '79 KTM 420 that Jon has for sale, but I wanted to race in the Historic class ( as I have acouple of friends racing in that class) instead of the 1978-1982 Gran Prix class..Thanks, Buddy:D
Buddy- Jon, here I'm interested in the Penton 400. Do you know of any one who travel's to Minnesota. I hate to have to pay $600 for shipping.
Buddy,
You have email.

I'm either hi or 2nd hi bidder i haven't checked today but i'm really only after his frame, swingarm, and possibly tank-(the spare parts)so if someone gets it and wants to sell above stuff to offset cost of bike let me know please. The seller is real unclear on what he wants out of bike and if he will seperate these items-I emailed him with no response yet.......

I might put this one in my cross hair. She is a beauty!

Jon,
You have mail.

Buddy,
I hope that you were planning on using this GS6 enduro model for cross country, because you would be better off with the MC5 model for MX.
John J Slivka
I know for a fact that this bike is good for MX or cross country. The only difference is the loop for the rear fender and the cover over the frame back bone. I would put my GS6 up against any MX bike. The GS6 frame has two shock settings, one for Cross country and one for MX. The frames are the same other than the cover over the frame backbone. Later Gary
What's a fair price for this bike, high end and low end?
Here's where it gets sticky!!!! I know that we are all trying to be nice and considerate to each other, but it looks like there are a couple poggers that want this bike and if you guys weren't bidding on it, I would love to bid on it also. I would also be happy with just the frame and swingarm. The auction process will insure that the guy who is willing to pay the most will get it.
Teddy
If I could sell my 420,I'd give it a try. The reserve is $2000.00. I'm moving soon, so I don't really need another bike unless I can sell one of mine.Good luck guys,
Reserve at $2000 gets me out.
Teddy
Teddy I will build you a 400 GS6 if you want one.:D:D I have all the parts to put one together. Later Gary
Hi Guys,
I had the seller email me some close-up pics of the GS400..it's not in that great of shape once you see it close-up:(..I'd have been willing to go $1200.00 but not $2000.00 for it even with all of the extra's..but I don't know if you will even get the extra's for the reserve price..I could not nail down the seller as what it would take to get the extra's..I know Jon's '79 420 is in a different class but it's in alot better shape than this GS400..anyone want to see the close-up pics just email me an I'll send them to you..Good Luck & Happy Bidding..I'm out..Buddy
Maicobuddy- go over to mototalk and look under my post "get your vintage on." It has huge pics of both sides of my 420,old pics but still looks good.
So, Gary, You'd put your GS6 up against any MX bike? Well, I'd put you on a Moped and me on my 390 and you'd win! The bike doesn't mean nearly as much as the rider ;)Thanks for the parts, brother, talk to you soon :)
Can somebody out there please tell me the colour of the forks in the photo of the GS6.I think I want to try and make one up just like that. I presume the triple clamps are the same colour. As an extra has anybody bought the orange DC Plastics side covers for this bike. Are they a reasonable reproduction fit well etc.
Cheers Bill
Bill,
The fork legs appear to be natural in color, no paint,(they may be Marzocchi's), as does the triple clamps. My 77 GS 250 came with Ceriani's forks, which have black fork legs and unpainted triple trees. These are completely original from Penton.
Tony
Bill,
I test fitted three revisions for Don at DC Plastics personally to give him feedback on the GS-6 and MC-5 panels, and the last revision was very close to the originals that I sent him to copy. Plastic panels shrink when removed from the mold, thus the necessity of the revisions to enlarge the molds until the dimensions are correct on the finished product. I am confident that the panels fit correctly, as I fitted the GS-6 panels and the MC-5 panels on my GS-6 and MC-5 frames. Mike

I enjoy rebuilding and appreciating Pentons!
1974 250 HS Pentons-1980 KTM 175-400'S
A 77 Penton with Marzocchis would have gold colored fork legs with the triples painted silver. I just did a set and used PJ1 KTM gold epoxy and they look very nice. Instead of painting triple trees on my bikes I bead blast and polish them. I just can't make myself paint nice aluminum parts.
Dennis Jones
Hey Dennis, what's the difference between bead blasting and sand blasting? Can you achieve the same results with sand? Thanks, Mick.
Sand is more abrasive, beads work better for the "look" you want.
With a blast cabinet you can use different media that is less aggressive than sand on soft metal parts. We bought a pretty nice one from Harbor Frieght for around $200 and we use glass beads in it.
Dennis Jones
I've been doing my frames with play sand from places like Lowe's and Menard's. Where do I get bead material at, and is it more expensive?
Mick,
You don't want to use Play Sand. Lowes also has the stuff you should rather use.
No. 1962, Quikrete Commercial Grade, Medium Sand. (Washed, dried, screened) Silica-like sand. Has a green stripe on the bag.
Are you going to try to make it to Log Road this Monday ?
Bob
Hey Rob, thanks for the info. No, won't make it to Log Road. I actually start a 3rd job tomorrow night (in addition to teaching and eBay) and need to make money, not spend it! Thanks for asking, though, Log Road was one of my first races and you and Greg Troyan were the first POG members I ever met when I went there. Good luck!
I have 2gee's into my 1977 400gs 6, and its not brand new (30yo), but its trustworthy on a 60 mile Sunday trail ride!! Any weekend. Ya gotta love the big bores [}:)]

Thanks for the info guys. Orange might be the way to go. Cheers Bill
Mick: Glass bead and many other types of blasting media can be purchased thru Graingers if there is one in your area. It is more expensive. For real fine cleaning you can also use baking soda, but it does not remove paint near as quick but leaves a great brite finish on aluminum. Also totally bio-degradable.
Dennis,
Do you a photo of your 77 GS with the Gold fork legs? I have never seen that color on a Penton, I would love to see the photo.
Tony
Go to the photo below....This is original color of the stock fork legs....this is not my bike, but it's the same color the forks were on my 77 GS6 when I bought it new.

Thanks for the link Steve, thats the color I'm talking about. I think it was used on 76 and 77 MC5's and 77 GS6's. As the photo shows it didn't hold up to well. The PJ1 KTM gold epoxy looks real close and I think it will hold up good.
Tony I will try to post pictures of mine when I get it back together. It is my 77 250 GS6 I have used the last couple years in AHRMA cross countrys. It ate a crank seal at last years RR so while the motor was out I decided to do a full refurbish, ie blast and paint the frame, seat cover, cables, bark busters, stainless fasteners, DC Plastics fenders and side panels, ect, ect.
