Title: Seat Cover Adhesive
Post by: Marko on July 10, 2007, 12:40:22 PM
What adhesive is recommended to stick a new seat cover to the fiberglass seat base of a 1978 KTM 400? The old stuff on there was really stuck. Thanks. :)

I use Weldwood contact cement. Be sure to follow the instructions and get it right the first time.

I use 3M yellow trim adhesive. (NOT pop rivets like I've seen some use.)[:0]

I've used contact cement with good success.  It helps to have an extra set of hands to stretch the cover tight.  Also helps to heat the cover - do it on a sunny day.

The Yellow Super 3M is stronger and loger lasting than the black Super 3M, don't know why. Go-Jo or kerosene will get it off your hands!!>:)

The gentleman who made and installed the cover on my seat advised not to use contact cement because it will give out over time.  I have experienced this myself. He advised using nothing but vinyl top adhesive.  You can find it at a good auto parts or auto paint supplier.  I took his advice since he has a large boat and car re-upholstery business.

Hope this helps.
