Title: Clutch Covers
Post by: Chrisbo on September 05, 2007, 03:34:37 AM
Hi POG,

Can anyone tell me what a clutch cover with part number 51.30.001.510 will fit? and would it fit my 78 250 motor which has the clutch cover part number 51.30.001.610.
If not does anyone know what the difference between the two is?

Many thanks [8D]
Chris.

Chris,
I believe that the first set of numbers indicate that it is for a 125 or 175 engine (they both have the same 14mm kick starter shaft size, vs the 250-400 17mm). It is possible that the cover will work if it has a removeable bushing in the kickstarter boss, which may be why your cover starts with the number 51 also. I may be wrong, but I think you should be looking for one starting with the numbers 54. I have at least one extra newer style clutch cover. I'll check on their condition later this evening to be sure of the condition. Around 1977 or 78 the shape of the cover changed slightly with 2 round notches instead of one on the earlier version, on the lower portion, and the later version works up until early 1980. My computer is out for service, (toast), currently and I am emailing from my folks home, so I will get back to you as soon as I can. Mike

Chris,
I found that I have 3 of the 125/175 clutch covers 51.30.001.510, most of which need repairs except for one which I will be using. I have one good 250/400 cover which is 51.30.001.610 like yours. It does have a bronze bushing in the kickstart shaft hole, unlike the earlier versions which do not. Someone painted it black, but the only worn place that it has is a slight grove worn in the top flat where the clutch cable rubs on the cover. It is a very good usuable cover if you need one. All of the engine Parts Manuals that I have list the part # as starting with 54, (or 540 in the 1980 manual), for the 250/400 cover, but evidently the casting number on the actual cover is 51.30.001.610 for the 78-80 250/400 cover. Hi Mike,

Thanks for the replies. It looks like either KTM just used whatever parts were lying around and modified them to fit, or maybe over the years my motor has been modded.

I measured the kickstarter shaft and it is 17mm but the end portion that goes through the casing is 14mm [?] The motor number starts 7-5417*** which suggests a 77 250 motor but the frame is a 78 250 number [?]
I did notice that the kickstarter shaft seems to be just held in with a circlip so I guess it's easy enough to change them about.

Drop me an email Mike and let me know how much you are looking for the 250/400 cover when you get your computer up and running again, but don't fret, there's no immediate rush.
I still never heard anything from Jim re the clutch plates so I'm assuming that route is a lost cause.

Cheers
Chris.

OOPS! ignore what I said previously. It is a 17mm kickstarter shaft on my motor.
It helps if I pick up the right shaft to measure instead of rushing in and picking the first one I see with a spline on [:I] [:I]
I did of course measure the shift shaft instead of the kickstarter shaft DOH !!!!

Cheers
Chris.
