Title: KTM Flywheel Thread Die
Post by: 454MRW on October 14, 2007, 10:37:41 PM
Has anyone found a source for a left handed thread die for a KTM crank/flywheel end shaft. I am working away from home and can't find the thread size specs to see if I can locate one on the web. The thread size from the parts book and/or any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

Mike,

I do not have a source for a die, but I have saved a number of crank ends by only using a thread file.  It works on both right and left hand threads.

The file I have has 8 differnt thread sizes to choose from.

Good luck,

Tony

Does anyone have access to the engine parts book to see what the thread size is? I will get a thread file, but would like to have a die to clean up the threads afterward. Mike

Hi Mike,  I checked the KTM engine parts book and find the following thread size for the crank end nuts 250 and 400 as follow,
Mag side nut is 12 X 1 L/S, and opposite side is 18 X 1.5 Din 936.
My home phone if you care to call and discuss while I look at the book is 724-745-4231. I have used the supplier Merlin is referring to with good results, but the min order is $25 as I recall so you may wish to look over what they have and be prepared to meet the min.

Mike,   You did not indicate the engine size you were wanting, and so a word of clarification, I am looking at GS6 engine manual.
For the 125 and 175 engines the Mag nut is also M 12 X 1 L/S, but the opposite side is M 14 X 1.5.   My earlier post referred to 250 and 400 engines out of the GS6 manual.   I do NOT have a manual for reference later than the GS6 engines.   Nelson McCullough

Thank you Tony, Merlin and Nelson, I am working on a 78 250 KTM engine. I will be picking up a thread file and also ordering 2 12mm  X 1 LH dies to clean things up afterwards. One for me and another for Gary. Mike

Mike,

Every manual I have on KTM motors from 125's through the 495's (1972 to 1981) uses the 12 X 1 L/S nut on the magneto side.
