Title: AAAARRRRGH!!! EEEBBAAYYY and the INTERNET
Post by: Dennis Jones on December 29, 2007, 09:18:41 AM
I have been giving my garage a deep clean and TRYING to sell off some things I don't need on ebay with the stipulation I only ship to the USA but Italians keep winning the bids. Anyone know how to handle this?

Dennis,
There are settings within the auction listing where you can block bidders with low feedback, bidders outside the country and etc. I can't remember exactly where it's at right now but it looks like Ron C knows and has offered to help you out. Give him a call and I'm sure he'll point you in the correct direction. Good luck .

Dennis, you can also require that overseas buyers use PayPal, and also that they use Priority Mail International, which includes insurance.  At least that way YOU are protected!  Good luck,

Mick

Maybe Dennis just wants to keep the Penton parts and bikes here in the USA.  If it leaves the country , it will never be seen again.

Dwight is Right, It always bugs me to see the guys filling box trucks to the brim with bikes destined for overseas at Mid-Ohio

I know how to do it now. Under buyer requirments you can block bidders that are registered in countries you do not ship to.

Dennis , you are right. It really pisses me off to see someone selling away history where we in the USA will never see it again.  There are not enough of these oil bikes and parts to do that.  I can think of at least German bikes that there are no parts for left in europe and they are scarce here. Same with someone selling a 30 year old motorcycle to someone to teach their 12year old how to ride on and let him destroy it.  After all it is just an old bike. Right ?  I tell folks that if that is what they are looking for , find a 10 maybe 15 year old bike but one it is 20 years oil it is a antique / Vintage bike and deserves better treatment and parts are hard to come by.  But some folks will never understand.

Theres citizens right here in this Country sending every available Norton Commando out of the USA right now !!   It costs 50 bucks to put it in a container with 75 other rare and decrepit bikes and ship them outta here.  With the British pound and the Euro worth more than our dollar.   Non motorcycle types  are capitalizing on this at an alarming pace!!  :(

You better listen to Speedy.  I have had good luck dealing with the Italians and if anything they have exchanged favors with me.  Remember the dollar does fluctuate and USA may have a buying advantage in 5 years.  I have lived and watched the dollar go up and down.

I don't have anything against Italians, I just prefer to sell my parts here. What I don't like is that my auctions stated I only ship to the USA and some would bid or use the Buy It Now assuming I would ship anyway. Others were more polite and would ask if I would consider shipping overseas. One Gentleman and I had quite a nice chat and I told him I would ship something to him if he won. At least he ask first.
It's kinda like parting bikes out. While I have took advantage of getting hard to find parts I prefer not to do it.

I'm selling my MGA soon and I am considering shipping it to the UK for sale.  You get around a 50% premium doing so.  It's called capitalism.  Patriotism is a different thing.

Hi Dennis,
I don't understand your problem. If the italian bidder pays the higher shipping cost, the situation is always the same for you.
I met Ron Carbaugh on ebay (he sold me some monark parts) and we are friends now.
Italians are keen on penton bikes, there are a lot of penton parts in Italy and you might  needed of Italians tomorrow.

Hi Maurizio,

After hitting ENTER I am sure I will need parts from Italy tomorrow and I did not mean to offend. I applaud all KTM enthusiasts.
Other than I just prefer to sell in the USA the situation is not always the same. To sell in the USA all I have to do is take the item to work with me and ship it from there. To ship overseas I have to go to one of our city's post office's who's hours open are not the same as mine. I am always open to try to work with someone but to just assume I will (using buy it now or a snipe when the auction stated where I ship to) is just rude.
You are lucky as am I to have Uncle Ronny as a friend. I hope I can be your friend and help you out someday.
Best Regards,

Maurizio,
Thank you for the kind words, but you forgot to say that you have also helped me.  Dennis is in the same situation as a lot of people in the USA in that we must fill out Customs Forms and put up with the lines at the local shipping agent.  This has been a great discussion and I will tell anyone that Dennis has helped me so much and is one of the real stand up guys in the POG along with his Buddy Gary Ellis.

So, if I ever make to Italy, do you think he would let me race his Ancillotti?

I would be very careful shipping to Italy.  The postal system there is very unorganized.  I would only ship express and insure everything.  I have a person who filed a claim with Paypal although the tracking shows it was delivered.

My .02 cents

I had some trouble with shipping to the USA.
Will that keep me from doing so again???
Will I warn everybody not to ship to the US????
Certainly not.
It has absolutely nothing to do with the NATIONS.:(

Dennis, I understand that you might have additional trouble shipping to other countries. However the topic might might wasn't the best. It certainly had me "whattthheee...."
I can guarantee you all that the itaian postal system works just as good as our swedish. Hopefully it works equally good in the US and elsewhere.

The idea though that these old bikes is a question of nationalism just doesn't sink in here. Sounds like someone got stuck in the 70:s.

In my mind we are a bunch of individuals spread all over the globe that like these bikes. We should help each other with pieces and share experiences. To me there are no national borders involved whatsoever.

Just my point for what it's worth...

This will be my last post on this.

1st and formost no offense was meant!

2 I rarely sell anything on ebay as the whole process is a big
hassle for me but I have quit a few spare parts that I no longer
need and I would rather see them used to complete other bikes than
  keep them as garage art.

3 For me to ship in the USA all I have to do is take the package to
work with me and UPS will pick it up there. Very easy.
To ship out of the country requires a trip to the Post Office,
take a number, and stand in a long crowded line. To do this takes
at least an hour of my time. Big Hassle!
BTW the same thing applies to Hawaii or Canada. I'm sure
professional sellers know a better way but I'm just a guy cleaning
  out his garage.

4 To avoid the problems mentioned in #3 I stated in all my ebay
auctions that I only ship to the lower 48 United States and I only
ship UPS. Being niave I thought that would be enough to avoid the
dreaded trip to the Post Office. Silly me.

5 Here's the frustrating part. Even though I clearly mentioned what
I stated in #4 I had three auctions in a row that had people from
from Italy either use the (buy it now) or snipe the auction.
If you had your 1937 Webely Vickers on ebay and had it listed as
local pick up cash only and someone from BFE won the auction and
said the check is in the mail ship it right out how would you feel?

6 In closing, due to my post I did learn how to avoid this problem
and got to make friends and sell some parts to some very nice
Italians who were courtious enough to ask if there was a way to
get them some parts they needed.

Sorry for the ramble but this has been taken way out of context.

BTW I changed the topic header to more closely match this thread

Dennis, I'm sorry if it appeared as I threw it at you. I wrote that I perfectly understand that you have a lot of trouble shipping abroad. I always ask first since the seller have to ship to sweden. That is a good thing as you pointed out. Your buyers should too.

My lines about possible nationalism wasn't intended for you at all. Some of the other posts came uncomfortably close though.

Dennis, ol Dave here, I don't have a problem with the Italians or any other countries, come on over, sit awhile, have a cold one, bring your bike, ride awhile, have some wine, how about some of my wifes hot peppers. More beer, lets ride somemore. What was that part you wanted, Oh well, we'll get'er next time. You'all come back.

Dennis is on the money. For us who work all day and try to ride/race weekends, time and trouble are paramount to the small $'s generated from selling off some spares to support our habit.

I'll pretty much give parts away to any enthusiast who'll stop by my garage, especially if they have a beer. But I need a bit more incentive to hassle with digi-pics, the net, boxing, and filling out a simple UPS form for US shipment. Almost no $ amount is worth the precious time I don't have, to deal with outside-US shipping--and we simpleton anti-bureaucrats cringe over the US postal system, avoid it like the plague.

That being said, I've accommodated several friendly and cooperative Aussies, Canucks, French and Italians who asked first, and were considerate of the additional time involved, undertood inability to track shipping, slow delivery, currency conversion, etc, and likewise have received help and parts from overseas friends too. The easiest bike sale I've experienced was a Harescrambler sold in to Italy (no one in US would step up)...buyer wired funds to my bank, had a trucking firm pick up from my house, and used a US intermediary to deal with crating, shipping and customs.
