Title: Mag side seal?
Post by: vitaminT on January 12, 2008, 05:01:33 PM
Can someone tell if and how an original magneto side crank seal be changed without splitting the engine. I thought I would ask before destroying the metal cover over it.
Thanks in Advance

When you referenced the metal cover, my guess is you're working on a KTM motor.  If so, remove flywheel, stator, and stator base plate.  Remove seal retainer screws.  Pry off seal retainer (the gasket may hold in in place really tight).  Dig out seal from back side.  Press in new seal, install new gasket, and reassemble.

I have never replaced seals in a Sachs motor that I didn't already have apart but I don't see why you couldn't just puncture the seal and pry it out and replace it.

Hope this helps.

Best regards, Richard

I have often used a couple of wooden screws,(or similar for metal sorry dont know the name for them in English), with washers to get a good grip for pullin the old seals out.

I just realised I gave you guys a good laugh :D with my "swinglish", but we all need that too along with some practical advice. Can you teach me the words for a "selfthread" screw for wood and a "similar" screw for metal[?]

We simply call the screws for wood, wood screws. The smaller variety metal screws are usually called self tapping screws. Mike
