i met with some of the mid-ohio, ahrma and ama people on thurs and everything seems to be on track. we will have to police the roadway through the camping area to allow for traffic during the races to be able to access from one side to another in the area where we will enter and exit the woods to the mx track. not that big a deal though. we'll have to have some type or snow fence or something similar to line that portion of the course. other than that, i don't see any other issues developing. i went out there this morning for about three hours (kinda rough hobbling around with a ruptered acl in my knee) along with pvcc competitor jim kuhns. we cleared some more brush and clarified the trail a little better and remileaged it and we are up to about 3.4 miles not including the MX track which will add another 1 mile. i'm proud to say that the course should be one of the better ones that we ride, with elevation changes, some tighter sections but also some places to pass and the spectators will be able to catch some of the action on the mx course where we will be avoiding most of the jumps, kinda like an old school gran-prix course. hopefully we will see a good turn-out of novices too. the uphills have been situated so as to allow a good straight shot at them with some run-up room. hopefully, everyone will enjoy the ride and it will be a success for years to come. see everyone out there, i will be camping out in the southwest corner of the mx pits close to diamond don. please make it a point to stop over and say hi.

Thnaks, Jerry. It must be a real effort for you getting around. I hope you get better soon. Hopefully, if all goes well, Mid-O will be my first race back in action. I'm keepin' my fingers crossed.

Hey there Chicago Jerry-
Sure hope the knee is starting to feel better. I am really excited about the x-country event at Mid Ohio. It will be my first vintage CC race. We were hoping to get to some other vint races this year before this one, but it just didn't happen. Can you tell me if I will need #'s on my CC bike, and if yes, do I just use the same # that I use on my AHRMA MX bike? I wasn't sure how it was being scored..old or new school makes no difference to me, I am just excited that it was added to the already awesome Mid Ohio Vintage Days line up. I really appreciate all you have done and are doing to make this happen. See you there.
Toni[:X]
hi toni, just run the same #'s on your bike that you run in vmx. at some point in time, probably when you renew your ahrma membership, have them add cross-country to your card with your #. better get signed up asap. they are going to limit the entries to 70 and i think that it will fill up. chi jer [8D]
Toni, just use 33B on your bike. That way, I can get some credit for more laps.
On second thought, don't do that. Teddy would move me up to expert.[:0]
Lew Mayer
Thanks guys. I pre-entered weeks ago... CAN'T WAIT!!!
I really like that the novice will run at a seperate time, I was concerned about getting in the way of a fast or serious racer's way. Plus this way I can watch hubby in his race, rather then getting roosted by him every time he would have lapped me,LOL. Seriously think it is a good move for the sport, adds some comfort and appeal to a new cross-county rider. So thanks again, and Lew, trust me, I don't think you would want me to ride with your #, rumor is that "I ride like a girl!" You wouldn't want that said about you.[:0]
See you in the woods at Mid Ohio.
Toni[:X]
Jerry,
Thanks for the additonal info and hope you are doing well after the knee surgery. I sent my entry in several weeks ago but haven't gotten any reply. I also applied for an AHRMA membership at the same time since I needed to get a number. I'm sure they must have gotten the envelope with both items enclosed because they charged my credit card for the membership but not the entry fee. How can I be sure that I got entered ?? Do they usually post a rider list after the pre-entries close to see what # I'll need on my bike ?? Any idea how many entries they have to date ?? Let me know. Thanks !!
Dave McCullough
Also sent in all of my fees, have not heard anything. Tried to call the # for memberships but nobody answers, goes to a voicemail. Really looking forward to racing, first since 1976, hopefully won't get in any bodies way. Take Care,Rich

Jerry,
I recieved my conformation letter today for the P/V Cross Country race.Could you explain if we need to take this letter to the entry gate on Thursday when we arrive? Does the entry cover the facility entry/pass for the whole weekend?
Also Jerry and everyone else involved, many thanks for all you have done to get the Cross Country Series some needed attention at the priemere vintage ride in the country at Mid Ohio.
Bojo Stults
you should bring that letter with you just to be on the safe side. the gate that you should come in is on the road that borders the western edge of the property, the name of the road is ross rd and it is on the southwest corner of the property.your entry entitles you to a facility pass for yourself and one other for the weekend. off road folks have to get their credentials at this entrance only or they will have to pay anywhere else. and you can camp in the off-road participants pit area, see you there. chi jer

hi again speedy, ahrma membership is 40$ i know that for anyone over 70 that the entry fee is waived for mx, but i'm not quite certain if that is the case for C-C races but i think it is. you would ride that machine in the +70 expert post-vintage race. tomorrow, i will try to track down with certainty if the entry fee is waived for +70's in the CC races. they will issue you a race # with your card, but even if they don't get back with you with that info right away, as long as there is no conflicting rider with the same # that day you can usually ride with whatever number you have on your bike, again, thats assuming that the rightful owner is not there using the same #. good luck, looking forward to meeting you, i have owned and raced one of those sachs seven speeds in the past, seeing yours will bring back some memories. jerry

Toni-
first off how is the leg? last time i saw you, you were on crutches in a golf cart! but i was talking with my dad, and gary ellis, and said i wanted to try a cross country race. my dad said he didnt want to put me in the way of faster riders. and i didnt want to find a real troubling spot to get stuck in. so we found out through gary ellis that novice riders are in a sperate race. and my dad and i are going to walk the novice track, and see if it looks like i could still handle it. well see how things work out. but it would be a HUGE privilege if I got to ride in the same race as huge. see you and 'your' gary, in a few weeks!

Ambr, I am sure "Chicago" Jerry did a good job with the CC course. He knows what a good course should have and what it should not have and it should be challenging but not so tough that Novices cant make it. Teddy Landers came up with the separate Novice race idea for exactly the reasons you mention, so you will not have to worry about faster riders. You will also find that most CC riders will stop you if you are stuck and need some help.
Brian
Well, a big thank you goes to Chicago Jerry, and Teddy Landers. I didnt know who's idea it was for the seperate track. now i do. so thank as well brian. see you all at the penton tent, if not on the track.

If not,I could enter a Canadian Hare Scramble onn that weekend.

and toni, i am totally excited that you will be riding. and i am not going to be racing in the x-country. but i am going to be there to cheer you one... and i suppose your husband also.:)i am, however, going to walk the track and see if i think i would like it. i am still happy to ride with you in the mx too! and my dad actually gave me a suggestion and said that we should ask Scott Brogan(Penton Shirt Designer) to make us a couple of shirts that say something along that involves 'pentons and girls'. i thought this was a cute idea!

Speedy, only 7 hrs? That's practically next door! I have exactly 14 hrs drive non-stop from Wichita, KS.
I called Cindy Cowell from AHRMA today to straighten out my pre-entry for the CC race on Friday and my 100cc race on Saturday and she said, "oops" but "I'll take care of it personally!"

here's the lastest, greatest and probably last pre-race report. i had kevin outland, a pretty accomplished off -road guy, ride the woods portion (3.43 miles) of the course yesterday on his modern bike to time it out. first lap, 15 minutes. second lap, 14 minutes.
add the mx portion and factor in older bikes and more riders and we may be doing three laps but possibly four for the leader. also, i rode the course today with corky root, with the exception of the one significant uphill. he's 71 and was on a xr 80 and i was on a xr 100 but i can't stand up on the bike because of the knee injury. we both got thru it and he loved it. i believe that you will all enjoy it. see everyone there. [8D] chi jer
Jerry, Thanks for all your efforts in making the CC race at Mid-O possible. Thanks also to all those who helped Jerry make this a reality. It's going to be great ... and JP & Jack and POG members will be there too -EPIC! See you at the races -EP

Jerry and all the other AHRMA people, thanks for the first of hopefully many more CC events at Mid-Ohio. It was GREAT. I rode the first race and track was nice. Thanks for all the hard work everyone did.
Ted Atkinson (74 Honda CR250)
Thank you all for coming and riding our CC at Mid Ohio. Jerry and Jim Kuhns did a yeoman, incredible, job of laying it out for everybody to enjoy - including low pipe Elsinores. Jerry was still cutting logs out on the trail on Thursday afternoon to make the Premier bike and low pipe bike folks happy. It was awesome - if you didn't enter it, you missed it!!!!! We had a few guys get lost in the Post Vintage race after a kid (vandal) started taking down the ribbons that helped us see turns coming up. Most of us saw the arrows and stayed on track. Next year we will put up "X" signs on the path behind these places where there are ribbons to help riders if the ribbons are vandalized again.
It was super wonderful to have Jack and John blessing us with their presence for the rider's meeting and the awards ceremony. Over 180 riders with a separate Novice class race, biggest AHRMA CC race so far this year.
You could help our CC series grow and improve if you would write (email) to Cindy Cowell, AHRMA Executive Director (
[email protected] ), Alex Moroz, AHRMA Off Road Director (
[email protected] ), Dave Janiec, AHRMA Board President (
[email protected] ), Corky Root (
[email protected] ), Dave Lamberth (
[email protected] ) and James Smith (
[email protected] ), AHRMA CC Rules Committee members and tell them how much you appreciated the separate novice race. The novice riders love not having to look over their shoulders all the time and the Intermediate and Expert riders love to not to have to wait to pass novice riders all the time. I have been having a hard time getting the separate novice race accepted by some of the folks above. When we mix them together, some of the Experts lap the Novices 4 times per race!!!!
Thanks for your help with this, see you at Barber and the Reunion ride????
Teddy
