Title: 100cc Cross Country class
Post by: [email protected] on August 01, 2008, 06:58:43 AM

Hey guys,
First I would like to congratulate Tom Flores on his great 1st place win at Mid-Ohio in the 100cc MX class ! Tom great race and you are a first class guy also. I hope we can hook up again maybe at Barber for one more race. It was fun being on the track with you.

Brian Kirby has put in for a rules change to allow a 100cc class for next years Cross country. The submission was received but not yet totally embraced by the AHRMA rules committee. Brian we are close but need a push maybe to show support for the class. I had a great talk with Ernie and Christopher Phillips at my booth at Mid-Ohio about this exact thing. But I have a plan and an idea to maybe push this over the top. Some of the AHRMA rules committee guys want to see a 100cc cross country "support class" at maybe three events next year to see if there is a demand for this class. If you are chasing national or regional points on let's say your Jackpiner you will not forgo racing that bike for the 100cc Berkshire at an event. You can only race one class in cross country so why give up racing the class you are in even if it meant  proving a point for the 100's ?

Does not make a great deal of sense to me at least but... After talking last night to Alex Moroz from AHRMA who is for this class I had an idea. I know that we have a lot of riders from the Hodaka group that just like to ride the ISDTR and are not concerned for cross country points. If there are any of our Penton brothers who do the same thing what if we have a 100cc Class at this years ISDTR ??
No national points will be awarded but you can still medal. From my perspective this might be the perfect venue to do this. Although time is short before Tulsa.

I would drop a 100cc motor into the chassis of the bike that I normally ride at the ISDTR which is a 125cc Combat Wombat. From a Hodaka's point of view it is hard enough to chase you guys on 175cc Jackpiner's while on a 125cc Combat so this 100cc class from a Hodaka and Penton perspective seems natural.
I will be out of town until Monday but if you guys get a chance please let me know your thoughts , suggestions and ideas. I need to get back to AHRMA and Alex as soon as possible if this is to happen in time for the ISDTR in November.
Thanks as always for the space.
Paul

Paul,

Thanks for the congrats!  It's been a true joy to be able to compete in the 100cc class on my Berkshire and I thank you for your efforts and the support of the Hodaka family to help make it possible. Ernie and Wendell big thanks to you as well for your support.

I'm planning on making the Barber race and hopefully your bike will run better for the event, I know your bike was a little off at Mid Ohio and the outcome may have been different had it not been for that!

Take Care,
Tom Flores

I am building a Honda SL100 racer right now, that I plan on riding at Barbers.
I also have my 1972 Hercules K100GS which is a hoot to ride if I can get the front fork to stop bottoming out.
I also have several Hodaka 100cc bikes.  I have a Dirt Squirt, Ace 100B+ , and a 1972 Super Rat.
I have a Kawasaki G5 / KE100 too.
I have a project Penton Berkshire 100cc steel tanker also that I am building.
OK, I like FunHundreds !

I have been on the fence about riding my 72 Berkshire 100XC at this years reunion ride , or my newly aquired 83 Husky 250XC.

A 100cc class would probably push me over the edge....

Tom thanks for the kind words but you had me beat easily. It will be fun to race you again though maybe in Barber. It was nice speaking to you on the line !!

Hey guys I thought to throw this out there one more time. If there is going to be a 100cc class at this years ISDTR in Tulsa I have to know how many guys MAY run this . We have a few Hodaka guys willing to ride 100's in Tulsa.
Hodaka Dave is in as well as myself. Anyone else please ???

If there is not enough of a demand then I fear that the possibility of a national 100cc cross country class may end right here. I have six days to get back to AHRMA and let them know if we can pull this off or not. If there was ever a time to pull this off now is that time. So spread the word please. I hope this will work out.
Thank you.

Paul,

If I can build one or borrow one by then I will do it.  It is 2 weeks before leaving to go to the Baja 1000 but if I am careful...  I will try to make it happen.

Thank you guys !!!!! I have been given until next Tuesday to talk with my buddy Alex Moroz with AHRMA about the 100cc class possible numbers. I think we might be able to pull it off. Brian thank you for riding the class . I did not mean to jump in from what you started with the rules change submission but the opportunity seems to have fallen in our lap. I really feel that if we can put on a good showing in the 100cc class at the ISDTR in Tulsa we stand a good chance to have that national 100cc cross country class next year. I really appreciate everyones help and support.
As soon as I know which way we are going I will be sure to post again.
Thanks
Paul

I'm looking forward to it Paul. We need to make a statement, not only should we try to get a good showing, we should try to have the 100s as the largest class at the Reunion Ride.

If I did it would be on a Herc, Hodie or Honda probably. My Penton isn't ready.  I can't promise I will be there as Debbie must be at AMA, SERA meetings that weekend at the Gobbler Getter Enduro at Maplesville, AL.
I had thought about riding my Jackpiner.  What a rocketship !
Greg Holder and I had talked about a Penton Team with a Jackpiner, Six Day and a  Berkshire on the team.
But like I said , right now it really doesn't look possible for me.

Paul,  Christopher and/or I may be on Berkshires at Zink.  Decision on who rides what sorta depends on which bikes can be made race ready that late in the season.  Riding these 100s in VMX is one thing.  Keeping everything together for 2 days, climbing hills, slugging your way through trees, rocks and swamps, with clutches smoking and riders huffing ... and then going at it in the final Grass Track MX is ... something for the record books.  We'll be there!

Brian, Any question about the Grass Track hole shot [8D]?

How about doing it for 6 days?....It never ceases to amaze me! I'm sure Dane has some great stories about trail side repairs with duct tape and bailing wire.

Dependability is merely one of the many attributes that make Pentons the great bikes they are!

I figure a 100 Sachs should be more reliable than a 125, afterall its the same bottom end with less HP, although it might get revved harder to keep it in the power. I dont slip the clutch so that should not be a problem. I am not too worried about top end speed so I'll have it geared so I start in 2nd and only use 1st as a bail-out gear. Time will tell I suppose.

Thanks Tom this is great. I will get some numbers off to Alex on Tuesday but it looks like we have sixteen or maybe eighteen 100cc class riders for the ISDTR in Tulsa. We  just made reservations yesterday for the " Post Oak Lodge". See you guys there and maybe in Barber too. Thanks Tom can't wait.

Thank you to everyone that has called or written us about the possibility of a 100cc class for this years ISDTR in Tulsa. I feel very lucky to have such great friends who have thrown their support into this full throttle. We do have a new 100cc cross country "support" class for the Tulsa ISDTR !!! Thank you to Dave McCullough for giving us the thumbs up to do it . A huge thank you to Brian Kirby for being the person to originally submit for a new 100cc class in cross country. Sometimes Brian when you dream it comes true.

What we have is a 100cc "support" or "exhibition" class for the event in Tulsa. This means that you will be in the medal chase for the event but will not receive national points for the event.

We are keeping it simple and following the 100cc vintage MX rules as listed below with some exceptions.

11.1.4 100cc MOTOCROSS: 88-100cc two-stroke and 88-120cc four-stroke production motorcycles

manufactured as up to 1974-model-year machines, and like-design. All motorcycles

in this class must have been manufactured 100cc or smaller-displacement bikes.

Eligible machines include:

Bridgestone

Bultaco Lobito or Sherpa S

DKW

Hodaka 90 or 100

Honda CT90 or CB/CL/SL/XL100

Indian

Kawasaki 90 or 100

Moto Beta

Penton

Rickman-Hodaka

Sachs

Suzuki TC/TS90 or TS/TM100

Van Tech frames with any eligible engine

Yamaha YL1E, HT1, LT2 or DT/MX100

Zundapp

a) Engine displacement can be increased to class limit, plus allowable overbore.

c) Electronic ignitions and reed-valves are allowed.

d) Maximum carburetor size is 28mm.

e) Aftermarket frames are limited to those listed, pending approval of the Rules &

Eligibility Committee.

f) Engine/frame combinations must be as manufactured; no mixing-and-matching of

engines and chassis into "specials."

g) Honda four-strokes are limited to the one-piece cylinder head. No major engine

components from 125cc engines are allowed.

Ineligible 100cc Motocross machines are:

Any machine or major component manufactured as/for a 125cc motorcycle.

Rickman frames originally manufactured for Zundapp engines.

Monarch frames.

Seeing this is a test and only a support class and time is of the essence you can put a vintage 100cc motor into a vintage 125cc chassis for this event. Next year when this class may be permanent rules may change but for now this is what we have and I hope it is positive for everyone.

There is not time to post the new class on the ISDTR application form so when you send it in write in " 100cc Class". Right now it looks like we have well over 20 riders for the class with more to maybe join us. See you in Tulsa.
Thanks
Paul

UPDATE

My rule proposal for a 100cc Cross Country class was voted NO by the CC Rules committee and voted NO 12-0 by the Board. There is now a period for Member input before they make a final decision at the board meeting after Barber on Oct 20th. If you want a 100cc Cross Country class it is CRUCIAL that we write a letter and let them know. Send it to the main office in North Carolina, and it must be in by Friday Oct. 3rd. Time is of the essence and you can make your views known!

Ron,

Any current AHRMA member can submit input, you dont have to actively race but you would have to be a member. Anyone wanting to send Member input on your desire to see a 100cc CC class should send it to the Executive Director before October 3rd.

Last minute Member input was critical in getting the 100 MX class changed last year to allow 6 speed transmissions, so dont think "I wont send a letter, they wont listen anyway", your input is needed. A big turnout for the 100 class at the ISDT Reunion Ride and Member input could make all the difference.

Brian it was really great to talk to you last night. Just to let everyone know the gist of the conversation I expect thirty or so 100cc bikes to show up at the ISDTR in Tulsa. We are counting on Brian not being the only Berkshire there. So please if you nailed down your cross country points please consider riding the 100cc class. How can anyone possibly deny this class when they see thirty or so 100cc bikes on the line ????? We all have one chance to make a statement and this is it.
Otherwise there was a mention of running a 100cc support class at three CC events next year.
That will NOT work. How can anyone expect a guy riding for let's say 200 sportsman points in June to run a 100cc bike instead of his or her Jackpiner ? Does not make sense at least to me.
Brian was the one who submitted the rules change for a 100cc class and I for one and many of the Hodaka riders also will show support at the ISDTR. We only have a few weeks to go. Brian you have our support !!
Thanks guys

Paul also made a good point last night, he is helping folks that would like to ride a 100 but need a part or two. I think anyone that has a spare 100 Sachs cylinder and would be willing to loan or sell it to someone with a Six Day and is interested in riding the 100 class at the ISDT-RR would be great. All it would take is a top end and some minor jetting to change a Six Day into a Berkshire for the weekend.

Hello everyone,
It seems that some of the "powers to be" have felt that the 100cc cross country class is not a valid class for Ahrma. I for one have felt that once the class participation for this years 100cc MX class has been counted that it will be one of the most raced classes.
I also know of many many of you that have joined Ahrma so to race in this new exciting class.
Can I please impose on any of you that have joined Ahrma this year to race the class to email me so I can add your name onto the list. Sorry I am getting old and the memory thing is just not working out that well.

We have aproximately thirty 100cc class riders at this years ISDTR in Tulsa. It still is not to late if you care to join us !!

After a lengthy discussion with Teddy Landers this past weekend we need help !! Anyone who cares to see this new class ( 100cc cross country) in Ahrma next year can you please send a letter via email to myself p a u l @ s t r i c t l y h o d a k a . c o m   or to Teddy who needs to present it to the board at Barber in a few short weeks. Teddy's email address is t e d d y @ t l a n d e r s . c o m

Thank you to all who believe and can help us by taking the time to see this come to reality. Brian Kirby and I need your help please !
Thank you
Paul

I started out on a 100cc Super Rat when I was about 12-13 years old.  When I got back into vintage bikes I bought 3 Hodaka 100's, one a Rickman Hodaka (garage queen) and two chrome tanked Super Rat's, one race-ready.

I've sent my email to Cindy Cowell last week thanks to Brian Kirby's post and also immediately sent a letter to AHRMA thru Paul Stannard.  I encourage all of my vintage friends to do the same.  Let our combined voice be heard.   Besides, someone has to catch "Baby Brian" on his Berkshire 100!  We can't let him have all the glory can we?

To AHRMA:

The purpose of this email is to state our support for the 100cc class in Cross Country.  We built a 100cc bike to race VMX this year and will also race at the Reunion Ride at Zink this year.  Everyone associated with this new class is having a blast.  Even those that are racing other classes have voiced their strong support for the 100s.  It is a huge success.  The same thing will occur in Cross Country if this historically significant class becomes part of AHRMA.

My son and I have really enjoyed ourselves participating in AHRMA events in both VMX and CC.  I hope the Board will carefully consider the views and desires of the membership, especially those of us who show up and race.  I would suggest that the Board delay any final decision until after the Reunion Ride at Zink.  Zink can be used as a measure of participation in the 100cc Cross Country class.  Please forward our views to the Board.

Best regards,

Ernest & Christopher Phillips
