I am trying to ID a clutch assembly I have on the shelf. I would have sworn it was from a 1980 125RV, but it has 8 sintered plates and 1 fiber plate along with 9 steel plates, very similar to a big bore 390-495 clutch only smaller in diameter. The plates are the same thickness as the big bore clutch. The parts book I have for the 125RV engine show fiber plates instead of sintered plates. My first guess was that I somehow ended up with a 250 clutch (I never had a 250), but the cast numbers on the hub and basket start out with 50, so I assume this is a type 50 engine, but I've not heard of a KTM type 50 engine. The parts books I have for smaller engines (1978 125-400) do not show this type of clutch. Anyone have any ideas what this would fit?
I did a little more digging and actually read the part numbers in my 125RV parts book and found that the hub and pressure plate numbers match those that are cast on the parts. So, what I have must be 1 of 3 possibilies: 1) It is an early version of the 125RV clutch before they went to fiber/aluminum plates or 2) it is a heavy duty replacement clutch from KTM since it uses sintered/steel plates or 3) the sintered/steel plates were used in the 175 and someone put them into this 125 to have a longer lasting clutch or ???
I am still researching this as these plates, especially the sintered ones, are in great shape and I hate to just toss the clutch away. The entire clutch looks very robust for a 125 and shows no signs of slipping.
Never toss any thing away, if you can't use it, someone else might.
