I actually rode my 100% complete 1973 Jackpiner this evening for the first time. It runs, not perfect, but it runs and looks almost new. Even my neighbor was impressed! This has been a five + year project that has gained momentum after my trip to VMD this year and the up coming the 40th celebration. I cannot post pictures but it will be in Ohio Saturday.
Boy my 77 GS 6 looks kind-a shabby beside the Jackpiner .. I guess it is next on the list.
I wanted to thank all of the POG members hat have helped me with this project, answering all of the questions and helping source parts over the years. Special thanks to Kip Kern, Doug Wilford, Rocket, Alan Buehner, and Dane Leimbach.
Look forward to seeing everyone and all of the Pentons this weekend.

Big congrats, Mike. Sure great to hear about your Jackpiner being up and running. Also, you're right about the kudos due to the above mentioned people. If it weren't for them I surely would not have gotten my bike completed.
Some pictures of the my 1973 Jackpiner project for those who did not see it a the 40th.
It was really cool to get to ride this bike again and being able to do at the 40th with a bunch of our heros and fellow POG'rs made it priceless!

Mike, that is really nice! I hope you don't mind a few questions since I am putting together a moderately well used '72 JP:
1. Where did you get headlight and tail light (or maybe you bought it with them). They look almost new.
2. How about tail light flap -- did you make it or source it?
3. Same for fenders -- did you source them somewhere?
Best regards, John
Really nice bike! One question, werent the '73s supposed to have plastic fenders?

Brian,
Early '73 bikes had alloy and later had plastic.

Ah, OK I didnt know when they changed over to plastic. I actually like the look of the aluminum fenders better, they just look really cool. I'm not sure I would want to be hit with one during a race, but they look awsome on a restored bike like Mike's.

Brian,
Great point that you wouldn't want to be hit by one. That is the main reason we changed to plastic was to not have a fellow rider have a cut from going down mainly in the first turn. Great observation.
Ron Carbaugh
On a bike like Mike has, it really looks nice with those alloy fenders, plastic just would not look right at all. My Berkshire is a July '72 so its a first month '73 model, it should have come with alloy fenders right? Its got original Preston Petty fenders on it right now, but I might throw some alloys on it if I ever do a real restoration.

Thanks for the feedback,

Headlight came from Al Buehner, ( on the supplier page), as a used unit, and I got it 4 or5 years ago. The headlight lens and chrome ring are NOS from Al, just got those. The bucket was re-painted along with everything else. My bike came with the headlight ears folded in behind the number plate.
Taillight came from a fellow POG member who had one left, still in the brown Penton brown paper. He was kind enough to part with it just a couple of weeks ago, so I could finish the bike. I am looking for side marker lights that may be a close "in the spirit of the original" light.
The flap I made looking at pictures and getting some rough dimensions from Doug Wilford. I made a pattern and I bought the rubber from McMaster Carr (on line). I have enough rubber to make several more if anyone is interested. I can leave out the holes for the tail light out so you can add them for whatever light you find.
Pro Motion makes a rubber flap light that actually meets the current requirements and is similar but bigger.
Fenders came from Royal Enfield parts on-line. They come raw aluminum and require polishing, which I do myself. They also require trimming to length for both the rear and front.
Brian
You are correct a bunch of 1973 came with plastic. I just like the look of aluminum and my parts book shows aluminum. I had originally planned to put white plastic on it until I found the source for aluminum. Plus no really knows which bike came with which type ... go with what you like.
I also just posted some of the few pictures of my original Penton from back in the mid 70's .... Boy was I skinny and I had a lot of hair!!
