Title: Original seat
Post by: Jerry Chafton on October 01, 2008, 08:12:03 PM
Did the original seat for a '74 Harescrambler have the Penton name or Penton KTM on the back in white letters or was it a solid black seat. I see many with the lettering but out of the four new Pentons I owned in that era I have no pictures taken from the rear. I am sure some of you guys will know.
Thanks

Hey Jerry, welcome to the Penton Owners Group  Website.  My jackpiner seats from 73 never had that KTM  across them, just the Penton. I think it was added on in later years.

Thanks Rainman, I think I have found a place to get some answers.
It is a bit embarrasing to ask some questions that I feel I should know the answers to but after 34 years I have forgotten so much. I will be in New England area next week picking up a 74' Harescrambler and a 75' Mint 400. I can't wait to get back on a Penton and hopefully some day soon compete in some vintage events.
If anyone has an original 74' Hare Scrambler please check your seat and let me know what is on the back, also where I can get a seat cover.

I just looked at my JackPiner #30160829 and the seat does have both Penton and KTM on the back. I bought the bike new in '73 and the cover is original. I will look at my Harescrambler later to see.

I have a 12/73 Harescrambler (ie, an early '74). It has the thinner seat. I think seats got thicker that month and the seat shape changed a bit. Anyway, my seat cover has both KTM and Penton. I have learned that categorical rules do not accurately capture Penton design, particularly in the realm of cosmetic features. So, I'm suggesting that an xample such as my seat does not rule out the chance of a '74 with Penton only. I'll post pics if possible. Regards, John

Thanks for taking the time to look. My seat is solid black with no lettering and was told it was Original. Just wondering....

Seems plausible. I have two 11/72 Jackpiners, one of which has no writing on the seat cover and the other of which has "KTM/Penton". Both seem to be original but only the second one is confirmed as original. Go figure.
