Penton riders did well in CC. "Kid" Christopher Phillips won Classic Int on his Six Day, Ernie Phillips won Sportsman 200 Int, Wendell Phillips won 50+ Novice and Arthur Hart won Historic 200 Novice. There were many others like Bill Ryburn, Teddy Landers, Spencer Balentine, Chuck Rueben, Lew Mayer and Glenn Berry but I didnt see how they did. Dwight Rudder absolutely dominated the PV race, easily winning it overall on his XR200R. Those tight woods were made to order for Dwight and his choice of bike. I wont mention any names, but at least one Can-Am rider did not fair well in super tight SE woods.

In MX Penton was well represented in the 100 class an Classic 125. I know Teddy Landers and Spencer Balentine rode MX but I missed how they did.

The 100 class was one of the largest of the day. "Kid" Christopher Phillips won a three way tie in 100 Int scoring 3-1 motos with Penton rider Tom Flores taking second with 2-2 and Suzuki rider Jay Wilson third with 1-3. I won 100 Expert 1-1 and Penton rider Mike Parker was second. I heard from spectators the the 100 class was the best racing of the day.

In Classic 125 Int, Ernie Phillips won the first moto but got knocked down the second moto and ended up second overall. He did win 50+ Int on the large Maigo. Christopher got third in Classic 125 Int I won Classic 125 Exp 1-1 on my Berkshire 100 and actually pulled the holeshot on the second moto against 125s.

Even with a very wet arrival on Friday, Barber 2008 turned out to be a Fantastic event.   The rain tapered off and skies began to clear by about 4PM.  We awoke to a cool clear day on Saturday.  Sunday was the same.  As Brian pointed out, Penton riders fared well in CC.  I know that Chuck Ruben took 2nd place in Classic int. and Lew Mayer took 2nd in Sportsman 200.  Interesting thing about ol' "stiff neck" Mayer, he got faster each lap.  Watch out when he and Speedy successfully lobby AHRMA for extending CC to 2 hour events.  In VMX "Bad" Bobby Lucas had a wrestling match with his Mint.  Not sure who won but Bobby did beat the Maico.  Fly'n Brian and the 100's put on the best show of the day.  (Brian let me take a spin on his "SoCal, Hollywood Carwash, PVC Berkie - the rig is quick!)  Brain also received the "Good Guy" award.  Bug Hart's '75 Kero-Piner got Cool Bike Award

Prior to Sunday's VMX, I heard several comments about the MX track as being UNSUITABLE.  In fact, someone even suggested that Barber should have CANCELLED the event.  If you just looked at the dirt, it was in fact, pancake flat and not too scenic.  There were no rolling hills, nor green grass fields to churn up.  There was no Union Jack flapping in the breeze.  However, there were some old War Birds circling in the air with the Red, White and Blue streaming down.  If you put on your thinking cap and traced with your eyes the serpentine layout you would realize that it was in fact a masterful layout with thigh turns, switchbacks, a fast back section with a few tame but challenging jumps.  All I can say is ask anyone of the 200+ racers who actually raced.  The track was safe, fun, and spectators had a full view of the WHOLE track from any one of several elevated vantage points.  And, the track presented a true test of rider skill.  What more could you ask for?

You're welcome John. Its guys like you, Ron C., Doug Wilford and all the other folks that provide the knowledge for newcomers to Pentons like me to keep our bikes running at the level Mr Penton intended. I appreciate all the help folks from the POG have given out, even when I ask a dumb question.

Thanks Brian and Ernie for the photos of the cross country and mx events. I was set up in the swap meet with my parts display and I also set up a POG display with the POG e-z up and Penton photos. Bill Ryburn (GA) came by on Saturday after his cross country ride to drop off his 1970 Penton Six Days bike to display. It still had Mr. Barber's mud on it and the people walking by enjoyed seeing a real "dirt" bike on display.  There were POG items for sale during the event which included the 40th anniversary Hats, T-shirts, coffe cups, change holders, and decals. Activity in the swap meet area was light compared to last year and there tended to be more lookers than buyers. Overall, it was a beautiful week end with nice weather and freindly people. Thanks goes to Lew Mayer, Bobbie Lucas, and all the other POG members that stopped by to say hi. I wish that I could have been at the race tracks to watch all you Penton riders, but someone had to mind the "store".

Al, sorry I forgot you when thanking folks that enable us to race these bikes. Without you it would be a heck of a lot harder to get parts for these bikes. Thank you for enabling us to play on our Pentons.
