Title: 1977 MC5 Clutch actuating mechanism - Repairable?
Post by: Lloyd Boland on October 24, 2008, 04:03:05 PM
I was having trouble with a very tight clutch a few weeks back and disassembled the clutch actuating mechanism.  It is the newer mechanism that has a single rod with the ball beairing cage at the end.  It was all gunked up, I cleaned it real good and everything seemed to be working much better.  Went racing this weekend, lost the master link and the chain came off, bent the chain protective piece in front of the clutch actuating mechanism, sheared off the front screw and broke the mechanism housing right at where the top bolt of the mechanism bolts into the side case.  I am going to tear it apart this weekend and see if there is any internal damage to the internal parts, rod, etc.  Is the outer casing of the mechanism repairable? Does anyone know what it is made of?  Does anyone have parts?  Thanks for any input.

In my experience this is one of the most difficult Penton parts to get (about as scarce as hen's teeth, very rarely if ever seen on ebay - of course watch one pop up and make a liar out of me).
Anyway, I would take a good hard look at repairing the part that you have if possible. JB Weld makes incredible claims and may be an option. An opinion from a good welder might be another option - the piece is an aluminium casting as far as I can tell.

Lloyd I can repair your clutch actuator. I have some extra actuators. You probably have no damage inside. Is the roller bears ok in the actuator? The actuator is made of magnesium. Give me a call 217 260 0237 Hope this will help. Gary Ellis

Thanks guys.  At least I know I have a solution.  I will take it apart this weekend and check to see if there is any internal damage.  I will then know what parts will need replacing.  The POG guys are the best.
Lloyd.
