Title: MC5 seat height
Post by: Mick Milakovic on May 06, 2009, 09:30:31 AM
Hi All,
Does anyone know the typical seat height of a 76 MC5 vs. a 78 MC5 and a 78 GS6?  After riding Gary's GS6 at Combs, Ambr thinks she likes those models more than her high breather bike.  I want her to be able to touch both feet (at least toes), and I like the weight savings of the MC5 over the high breather, so we're thinking a switch might be in order for New York.  Thanks,

Mick

Mick,

The 78 MC5 had about an inch more travel than a 76-77 so I believe that is the most it could be taller.  If that.  They were very identical with a tiny bit of shock placement difference and blunt porting in the cylinder.

Thanks Larry.  Could a different seat be installed?  Was there such a thing as a low, long seat?  I've heard of people cutting the seat foam down.  What do you think of that?  Also, what is "Blunt" porting?  thanks,

Mick

Mick,

I am vertically challenged:D and have shaved seatfoam on a lot of modern bikes.  It is easy to do.  In most instances you can use a plane or electric knife.  Then just tighten the cover up.  You could also run a tiny bit shorter shock and run the Zokes up in the triple clamp the same amount and not change geometry.

The 78 cylinders had what I call blunt porting.  The transfer area at the base of the cylinder was broad and flat at the split where it was before thinner.  We used to knife them to get more transfer.  I do not know how it actually effected the power to be blunt like that.  Mike Lenz could probably shed some light on that.

I saw in a search topic that stock Zokes in the day were 13.75". Ambr's shocks are 13.5, so we'll stay with that.  I was thinking about dropping (raising) the forks in the triple clamps a little already, so with those suspension settings and a shaved seat she might be ready for lift-off!

Mick,
I have very short rounded seats on my 78MC5 and my 77MC5 drag bike project. Both are fairly soft and a lot shorter than the seat on my  76 MC5 400. I would trade seats with you if you have another good MC5 seat. I also have several project 76, 77 and 78 MC5 chassis and various components to help you if you want to build one. Mike

Thanks Mike, I have your number and will call tonight.  By the way, the Motoplat worked perfectly; thanks so much and I'll even up on that one, too.
