Title: Barn Find Qualifier marks MC5 /Mint400 mtr
Post by: ktmkirk on May 10, 2009, 09:42:51 AM
I need verification of frame and motors numbers. I found a person who has a bike that was last ridden in the 1980 Michigan 2 day Qualifier with the original Qualifer marks on the bike . The current owner is telling me that it is a 250 MC5 frame that the Racer had put in a 74 mint400 motor in to run the Qualifiers "back in the day"  The bike is in great shape, but has not been started. The only real damage I see is that a fertilizer bag was resting against the fork tube and there is some weird corrorsion at the bottom of the fork leg that I do not know if it will clean up or not. The bike turns over with good compression and has a super trap silincer on it. He wants 800.00 for the bike.  If someone could identify the frame and motors numbers I would apreciate it . I can post some pictures later as well. If I end up not getting the bike and someone else wants it Please let me know.

Frame# 550 02 320
Engine# 54 30 003 010

Kirk,

What you have listed as the motor number is actually the case part number.  The motor number will be between cylinder and case just above the ignition.

Be careful using that engine in a MC-5 frame.  I had a 76 MC-5 first production bike (frame no 00013) back in 76 and the engine case broke on the left side going up to the frame (old style 74 type mount).  Of course that was at Gatorback in FL in a pro winter AMA series race. So without severe MX riding maybe it would be ok.  I remember seeing a Bultaco and an RM that broke in half that same day...so...probebly ok for anywhere but severe FL MX riding.  Keep those engine mounts tight though!

Thanks Mike. I did not even think to check the engine mounts. I am hoping that since the bike was raced mostly off road that it should hold up.
