Penton Talk / AHRMA out at VMD
April 21, 2009, 08:30:24 AM
BTW, just who is going to go to VMD anyway?

I'll be there. Will be riding my '71 steeltanker in the AMA museum's parade of vintage bike's and from what I understand, the bikes in the parade will be on display over the weekend. Got my pole-climber boots laced up, polished the old Bell 500TX helmet and joffa mouthguard, but unfortunately, my Penton Jersey seems to have shrunk several sizes over the last couple of decades.:(;)

Penton Talk / AHRMA out at VMD

I most certianly would not say the AMA has the high ground on this. In fact I would say just the opposite. It would appear to me that they have willingly allowed themselves to become a party to extortion. From statemetns released, they have said they have no horse in this race anymore, so to speak, yet they appear to have allowed themselves to be used as a tool by RI in his never ending quest to destroy AHRMA. The AHRMA/RI case was settled with prejudice in Tenn., so he side-steps that settlement by using the AMA agreemetn to accomplish the same thing, by forcing the AMA to do his bidding for him by getting them to agree to cease AHRMA sanctioning unless AHRMA settles with him...which was already done in the Tenn settlement.

Personally, as a dues paying member, I find the AMA's statemetns in several places concering their disgust of making the issues surrounding this public to be disturbing.

I find nothing in the AMA's behavior being of the "high-ground".

Penton Talk / ISDT Reunion Ride
October 18, 2006, 10:24:27 AM
Gol durn it!! Finally got the "boss" Ok to go, was going to order the tires today and came into work and went to request the time off. There are two of us that cover about 75 inpatients here on this unit at this VA. We cover for each other as far as taking time off and only one of us can be off at a time. Guess what......I had forgotten my partner is off duty at the end of the month...including two of the three days I would need to be off to make this event. Oh well.

At Park Hills you won't have to have all that stuff.  Bolt any headlight and tailight on and enter.  You will be good to go and will have the ride and time of your life.

Was looking at the supplemental rules and it says must have license plate..........so what you are saying is that if I just pulled the plate off my old GoldWing and bolted that on the Penton, it would be good to go?

Long story, kind of....

We had bought a Cannondale from Team Highland a few yrs back. Besides Cannondale they were a Kaw dealer. When C'dale went belly-up, they ended up picking up KTM as their 2nd line. Dennis, one of the owners knew I had the old steel-tanker, so when they were getting ready for their KTM "Grand-Opening", he asked if he could borrow the Penton. He set up a KTM racing pit Canopy with a new KTM 125 under it with my Penton sitting there beside it.

Got a lot of attention, so much that he asked if I would mind leaving it there, as it was a great conversation piece and people going into the stor were always checking it out. Since it never got ridden much, I just figured, why not, let others see it and enjoy it and learn about the Pentons..... Plus it was in a dry temp controlled environ, too. Well that was over two yrs ago!

Telll me more about this ISDTRR. What's the riding like? Been to some enduros and ran a hare scramble up here not long ago and don't really want to put this bike thru that kind of potential abuse. Have also discovered a few issues with the Penton. Seems some of the original rubber items are showing their age. One of the grips fell apart when we were loading it, already got some, just have to put them on. The front tire, the orginal Metzler, no has a small crack in the side wall, too.

Worst is it ain't running at the moment. Somehow, over the last two years, looks like someone caught something on the wiring harness and pulled it apart. Tried briefly hooking it back up, but only got it as far as getting power to the coil and nothing more. Didn't have a lot of time to paly around with it. Am busy putting the finishing touches on this one as its supposed to be in a bike show this coming weekend:

Is there anyone from this neck of the woods going down to the ISDTRR?? I'm just outside Kalamazoo, MI. Either someone to travel with, or if I do go down, between the truck and the bike trailer, I can easily haul 4 bikes.

Penton Talk / penton

Quite popular....even amongst old bike racers. A couple of years ago, racing out at Laguna Seca, my son got to do something I only ever dreamed of doing on a bike years ago. He was running 1st in class (single cylinder) and 3rd overall to a couple of guys in the twin-cylinder class (Yamaha TZ250's)....you might have heard of them, their names were Lawson and Rainey.

FOlks have been mixing matching engines/chassis for many decades, though It does eem to have been much more common back n the old days. My first attempt at it was back in the brakeless days.....I put a Triumph TigerCub 200cc engine in a Harley 165 Hummer frame. I suppose you could call it a Triley, but I think a Harumph sounds more appropriate. Seems like a lot of the conversions I come across these days involve folks putting a Honda 4-stroke into chassis such as the CR80, either on their own or like with BBR.

Did a Variation of that myself. Had a CRF450R chassis sitting around and a couple of old XR200s. SO what the heck.....pulled one of the XR200 motors out and stuck it in the CRF450 chassis:

Honda motor, Honda chassis...hmmm, I guess yo'd call it a Honda:D[?]
Actually, we call it our CRF200R!! I gues having been racing karts for years, got used to putting together a wide variety of engine/chassis combo's. Here's were the motor out of the CRF450R ended up:

Ron. have you checked out this site yet:

http://www.vintagekarts.com/

Another possibility is try posting in the general forum on this site:

//www.ekartingnews.com

Predominately a current karting site, but a lot of old timers, er, I mean Expereinced karters are still around. Had a Dart A-bone, but sold it last year. ALso sold off my last West Bend 820, too. Nothing too much vintage left here, I'm afraid.

Ron Carbaugh

Just hi-jacking the thread here!!  Hey Ron what kind of karts you into? was around them in the '60's and then again for the last 16-17yrs. Stopped racing myself in the early '90's, just crew for my son. This is him a Grattan in one of our karts:

Has a CR250 on it in that pic. Have also run the same chassis with a CRF450 and currently have a TZ250 I'm working on getting mounted up.

CHi jer

Nice meeting you. I had to leave early, like about 11-1130, so I didn't get to meet many others. Was supposed to have beenover at my son's all day painting his house, so couldn't have really stuck around any longer. But it was fun to watch.

BobW.....you here in Michigan??

Penton Talk / Wanna drag???
August 25, 2006, 12:58:11 PM
Ok , nuthin to do with the drag race, but sounds as though at least two folks from this site will be at Portland. Contemplating running up there in the morning to "observe", since it ain't far from here in Kalamazoo.

Any notable distinctions which may aid me in locating anyone? You know...blue Mohawk haircut, nose rings, wearing a pink carnation in the lapel of your tuxedo.......

I'd probably ride up on my "post-Vintage" '78 GoldWing or my Valkyrie. Could try squeezing into my old Penton Jersey, but the darn thing has really shrunk over the last 30+yrs!:(
