I am looking for a set of NOS or pristine used aluminum fenders for 71 steel tank Six Day project.  Anyone holding a set they can part with?  Thanks!

Rob,

I know for engines 54 designates 250, 55 for 400, 52 for 175, and 51 for 125, but I don't believe that is true for the frames.  If you take a look at the frame list for CMF bikes it lists this prefix as a production code and there are bikes of every displacement with the 54 production code.
Heres the frame list - https://www.pentonusa.org/penton-motorcycles/production-years/frame-number-lists/cmf-frame-numbers/

Rob,

Thanks for posting the photos.  The Berkshire, looks pretty correct other than the magnesium hubs and Akronts.  These originally had aluminum hubs and steel Radielli rims.  As for the 175, the frame looks more like a 74/75 with the positions for the lay down shocks and the triples and forks are from a later bike.  Take a closer look on at the serial number on that one to see if its actually 506XXXXX.

Thanks,

Kevin

Rob,

On the Berkshire, does the side stand mount under the swing arm or on the side of the swingarm?  If its under, I would call it a 72 vs. if its on the side its a 73.

As for your Piner - It's a 76, the 54 is just a prefix to the serial number that is on some frames, but not all.

Thanks,

Kevin

Wanted / For Sale / Re: WTB footpeg springs

Carl,

I purchased a few sets from Andre Horvath last year and they work great.  I have since added them to most of my CMF bikes.  Depending on the frame of bike you may need to trim or bend the end of the spring slightly otherwise they are a bear to install.  Below are links to the left and right side springs.

Dave,

Super helpful - this is exactly what I was looking for!  I will trim the sides of one of the CMF skid plates I have here to fit inside the down tubes on this bike.  Thanks so much for the info and photos!

Penton Talk / 71 Six Day Skid Plate Photo Needed.
March 24, 2025, 07:24:33 AM
I am in the process of refreshing a 71 Steel Tank Six Day and I am looking for a good photo of what other owners are using for a skid plate.  This particular bike did not have one when it arrived here, and I thought they may have used the same as the CMF bikes, but according to the parts manual (002) it's a 2 piece unit. I attempted to fit a later CMF skid plate, but it doesn't line up as the down tubes are more narrowly spaced than the CMF bikes.  Anyone got a good picture of what is supposed to be on there?

Thanks,

Kevin

Great looking build!  What did you use for a spigot adaptor for the Mikuni?  I can't quite see it in the picture.

Carl,

Based on the bikes that come through my shop, my best guess the aluminum pans showed up in mid to late 75 and the ones I have seen had a larger raduis over the back fender area.

Thanks Kevin.
