Penton Racing Talk / Early Enduroing on a Penton
January 16, 2005, 12:24:08 PM
I just discovered this group and forum this morning and read some posts. It is nice to see the interest here.
I moved from a used DKW 125 to a new Penton 125 around 1974, riding in 30 or more Northern California (District 36) enduros.  I made Expert (A) on the Penton and got first in class a couple of times. One of the best chances I had for an Overall was in a CERA enduro when I got to the gas stop zeroed.  The Motoplat had sparked its last, however.
I got a Husky 250 soon after, but never had quite the fun I did on the Penton and rode my last enduro around 1981 at the age of 40.
Successful enduro riding in the early days was a combination of being
able to keep time in your head and maintaining your bike for durability.  Electronic timing and tougher motorcycles led to faster events at just about the time one's body began to feel its age.
Happy trails.
