Penton Talk / 1973 250cc Hare Scramler - Enduro

It is a late 73 built but most likely sold as an early 74 bike.  It would have probably had the larger kick shaft like the 74 and later had.  Is the tank yellow or red?

Larry:
Thank you. It has an Orange colored tank. Could you also recommend where to purchase a set of rear shocks...that are meant for riding enduros, dual sport, etc.

I now have the engine number for the 250cc Hare Scrambler I was discussing with you. It is - 3-5400812. Does that help nail down the manufacturing date? Thank you again, Dataplace

The number you have listed as the engine number is a part number.  The engine number is on the cylinder down low just above the ignition.  According to the frame it is a early 74 model because of the September 73 date on the frame.  The motor number would be better to confirm this with.  It would have had white plastic fenders and originally would have had Metzler tires.  It would have had a fiberglass pipe side numberplate.  It probably has the Hipoint chrome enduro bars on it as they were very popular and had no crossbar.  The best shocks for the money if you are going to ride it are Progressives.  If you want it to look like the Girlings then go with Falcon but they are lame performance wise.

Penton Talk / 1973 Penton Restoration
January 23, 2005, 01:37:54 PM
I currently live in Huntsville, Alabama.
I was born and grew up in Alabama and had my motorcycle dealership here and did all of my car and motorcycle racing in the southeast.  I lived around the country (Atlanta/Albany Ga, Dallas/Elpaso TX, Detroit MI, Gulf Coast FL/MS, Baltimore MD & DC area) over the years but always come back to "My Home's in Alabama".

Paul,
I did a little riding in the Bradford, PA area (beautiful country) and several years back spent a lot of on-business time at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh.

Paul,
Thanks for the encouragement. My son is now 23, all grown up. I rode him a lot on scenic trails when was very young and have been promising him we would ride together since he was about 13.
He has never ridden but has always wanted to, he recently bought a home in the country and there are a lot of leasure riders and areas near his new home and he really wants to give it a try.
I am too old to ride hard but can still putts around OK on my Honda XR500R I bought for leasure riding and want be too many years till my grandson could ride.
Feeling younger already,
Rodger

Ron,
Thanks so much for your help, sorry for the dumb question, I should have looked around more before posting.
I owned a dealership and raced several other enduro brands before I bought this one but never wanted anything else afterwards.
Just before I bought the Penton I raced against John or Jack, not sure which, and another Penton team rider and they blew me away so effortless I had to have one.
I just hope my son has 1/2 the fun I did on this bike.
PS: This is an absolutely GREAT site I am finding everything I need!

Thanks Again, Rodger

Penton Talk / 1974 Hare Scrambler Wheel Spoke Lacing
March 19, 2010, 11:28:34 AM
Greetings:
I am confirming the spoke lacing of the front 21" wheel on a 250cc Hare  Scrambler. There are two (2) types of spokes for the front wheel although they are the same length. One has more of a bend where it goes through the hub than the other. Can someone confirm which type goes on which side please - does the spoke closer to a 90deg right angle bend (i.e.with the most bend) go on the brake side or non-brake side? Thank you...

Penton Talk / 1974 250cc Hare Scrambler - Hub & Shocks
January 24, 2010, 04:19:38 PM
Front wheel hub - I found cracks in the magnesium on the front wheel hub. These run axially (approx 2"); start at the top (where the brake drum seal runs) where the steel sleeve and magnesium join. They appear to be from possible torque on the bearing sleeve that has been pressed in by the manufacturer. I would not assume this is typical..? If not, where can I find a replacement hub please?

As a second topic where can I find rear shocks (brand?)that are suitable for competitive riding and/or dual sport?

Thank you, DataPlace

My father-in-law and I are working on his 250cc Hare Scrambler. The ID nos. are as follows:  Engine – 54 30 003 010; Frame – 5430967853. I've read other messages about the engine color - this has black cases with the unpainted top end.

I am trying to understand what front fender it had on it originally - aluminum or white plastic and the size/type of the rear and front tires.  Was the exhaust side - side plate plastic or fiberglass?

Also the Handles bars are chrome with no crossbar. Was this original?

Also what are the best rear shocks to use that are original and for 200 lbs rider?

Thank you

I still have my 1973 Penton 250 Hare Scrambler that I bought new.  My son & I have decided to see if parts are available to restore it. Does anyone know where I may find parts and/or information for restoration of the following: A 1973 Penton 250cc Hare Scrambler with KTM engine (i.e. Shop Manual, Air Filter, KTM MotoPlat/or repair, carb kit, replacement seat cover, etc.)?
