Penton Talk / Sachs and Your Left Foot 101

I'll second Matthew's thanks to Doug! My father's '73 Rickman/Zundapp 125 shifts the same way, as I precariously found out this past fall on a ride with a few hill climbs. Not fun to miss an upshift on an intimidating grade! Can't wait to get my '72 SixDays back together from a frame up restoration to try out Doug's shifting tips (and go head to head with Dad's Rickman! ;)) Thanks again Doug, and keep the Tech Tips coming! Penton Talk / False Neutrals

Matt,

I'm in the process of rebuilding my '72 SixDay and can tell you the transmission is probably the trickiest part of this project.  Depending on your mechanical experience, you may want tackle this yourself.  First off, get ahold of an owner's manual for your bike, this is invaluable.  It lays out in fairly clear steps the process of engine/tranmission dismantle and rebuild.  As Dane said, the transmission must be properly adjusted to eliminate the false neutrals. This article
http://new.photos.yahoo.com/sachs175/album/576460762364397382  was recommended by the POG and it really helped make the proper adjustments. Also, you'll need the "Shift Adjustment Tool", and shims available from Al Buehner.  (//www.pentonpartsusa.com) Take your time and have patience with this project (if you choose to attempt it), also be sure to check back at the POG forums for any advice along the way.  Good luck! ;)

Penton Talk / Tech support column

Thanks Bill. I emailed Paul Danik last night with the idea. I will work on an outline and also see how well those articles scan. I am planning on working on it a bit this weekend, maybe use Photoshop to touch up the scanned images. I'll get something to you soon and we can go from there. Thanks for considering my plan and we'll be in touch! :)

Bob and Dan, if you want to collaborate on this send me an email.

Penton Talk / Tech support column

I like Bob and Mike's idea to have a seperate link off the homepage. John Durrill sent me a link this week to an old "Let's Do It Right" article on transmission adjustment. It was scanned in as a .pdf file on a website. This article was exactly what I was looking for, but I would not have found it if not for John's post.
So, my idea was to put these articles and other tech tips on the POG website. I know it would take considerable effort and time (and probably server space) to put this in place, but I think it would be invaluable to have.
With that said, I am willing to put some time into this. I have some old "Keeping Track" issues and thought a good start would be to scan the "Let's Do it Right" sections and forward them to POG. I beleive the "Still Keeping Track" issues have a tech section as well, and this could possibly be scanned and uploaded. Would anyone know who in POG I should contact to float this by? Any other thoughts on this ambitious plan?

Great idea for a restoration page. Is there anyone from POG Admin with thoughts on this ?

Thanks for the link John! With it and all the advice from this thread, I should be able to get the transmission in order. Hopefully the Sachs Transmission Gods will be merciful!

Penton Talk / Sachs 125 Transmission Adjustment

Thanks for all the advice! Ron, I may take you up on your offer for "tech support". Dane, I'll try your steps and see if that does it. Seems I really do need that jig from Al to hold the shift mechanism in place (been using the case as a "jig"). Should have some time this weekend to look at it again, I'll post the outcome after that! ;)
Thrownchain, I'm in the Capital District, so I hope to have the bike up and running soon before the snow starts to fly!

After all the great advice and help I got from the forum this week, I had an idea to have a "Tech" section on the main POG page. The forums are a great source, but a section devoted to technical articles and tips would be great. (An electronic version of the "Let's Do It Right" column.) I have a few original "Keeping Track" issues and thought maybe a start would be to scan in the tech articles. Any ideas on this ? Is it feasible ?

Penton Talk / Sachs 125 Transmission Adjustment
November 13, 2006, 03:26:46 PM
Hi,

I am in the process of rebuilding my 72 Six Day 125 and need some advice on adjusting the Sachs six speed transmission. (The shoddy shifting of the bike was the reason I began the rebuild in the first place![xx(]) I've disassembled the transmission and made all the adjustments per the OEM manual. At this point, the case is back together and I am attempting to adjust the shift mechanism, but so far have not made much progress...
Searching the forums I found references to two articles specifically on this topic, "POG Newsletter c.2002" and "Keeping Track June '73, 'How to make the 100 / 125 Pentons shift like a dream' by John Cobb." Does anyone have these articles in print or electronic form? They would be IMMENSELY helpful! Short of that any tips for this adjustment would be welcome.
 Thanks!
