When was the last time that your local KTM dealership had a Penton sale? I could not hold myself back. The six days will remain in southside Virginia. A big thanks to Rob and I was glad to help.

Wanted / For Sale / KTM 175 or 250 engine
February 17, 2008, 08:47:54 PM
Ozzie,

A MC5 550 serial number with a 5303 sequence may push it up to a 1977 model. If you are looking for the correct year engine, then you need to find one with an engine serial starting with a 6- or a 7-. If not, then any 250 engine should work. Your choice between a 175 or 250 boils down to what pipe you have. If you don't have a pipe, you can find 250 pipes around for a price, but finding a 175 pipe could be difficult.

Penton Racing Talk / 100cc Tech Inspection
January 02, 2008, 06:13:47 PM
From my interpretation of the posts on the Yahoo Hodaka group, they have agreed that placing a 100cc motor in 125 model 97 Super Combat is allowed. This was based on the fact that the 125 model 97 Super Combat is basically the same as the 100 model 98 Super Rat except for the top end. With this known we would all have to agree that the same exchange is allowed on a Penton.

Penton Racing Talk / new 100 cc Class
December 05, 2007, 07:22:55 PM
What's up with rules for this new class?

100cc Motocross: 88-100cc two-stroke and 88-120cc four-stroke production motorcycles manufactured as up to 1974-model-year machines, and like-design.

a) Engine displacement can be increased to class limit, plus allowable overbore.
b) Engines must have no more than five gear-box ratios.
c) Electronic ignitions and reed-valves are allowed.
d) Maximum carburetor size is 28mm.
e) Aftermarket frames are limited to those listed, pending approval of the Rules and Eligibility Committee.
f) Engine/frame combinations must be as manufactured; no mixing-and-matching of engine and chassis into "specials."

This makes mid 72 and up Pentons ineligible, but a 74 Super Rat is allowed??? Why don't they just make it easy and make all Pentons ineligible?

I still may to give it go since the year guide shows that early 72's still came 5 speeds. I have Nov 01 produced CMF Berkshire with a missing motor ID plate, so I should be able to get it through. Anybody ever put a reed valve on a Sachs motor?

Buddy,
I hope that you were planning on using this GS6 enduro model for cross country, because you would be better off with the MC5 model for MX.

Penton Talk / KTM I.D. Help
March 30, 2007, 09:39:57 AM
Tom,

I am sure that you have an '84 built in late '83 based on the 8311 frame serial and the 3- year on the motor serial. The other clue is upside down forks, air cooled motor and drum brakes, because '83's used regular forks with disc brakes and I'm almost sure that they did not make the 420 in '85. I also have one myself and think that one great example of post vintage KTM.

I have seen these go for between 600-800 for a runner that needs TLC, to 1000 to 1200 for a complete kick and go rider and maybe a little more race ready. It's hard to say what a well cared for example with nice orignal unfaded plastic or a decent restoration would go for, the 495's bring more, but still no where near the same price league as some of the big bore post vintage Maico's that I have seen.

Penton Talk / 1976 KTM 125 on Ebay
March 10, 2007, 02:38:33 PM
Dennis & Mike

I have an original '76 125 GS just like the one on ebay with serial date of 511. One difference with mine is that has a swingarm just like Mike describes on his 250. The only other diffrence is that mine has a PP front number plate/headlight, I'm not quite sure about that headlight on the ebay bike.

I'm not so sure they were using left over '74's, I believe they were trying to make a lighter GS model for the 125. I conclude this after looking at the the first 125 KTM MX models (Pre MC5 with the CMF frames). Those frames are really cool. Non-high breather top tube, single top shock mount with round frame tubes in the back, '74 type swingarm without the oil access bolts, unique airbox with a unique air scoop on top and a down sized pipe that looks 1/2 CMF and 1/2 MC5.

Bob,

They look just like the side panels on my 1980 125 with the new style RV motor. I'm not sure that they will fit a '79 because the tube that the panel fits up against is different from '79 and '80. In '79 there was a separate tube welded in place and in '80 the tube extends all the way from the front with a bend in the middle ending up at a slightly different position & angle. So I believe that it's square shape front of panel for '79 and V shape for '80 & '81 ('82 GS too) for all sizes of bikes.

Penton Talk / Clarke tanks
August 03, 2006, 08:17:14 PM
Chris,

The Winsdsor 3.5 gal tanks that Al shows in his June 30, 2006 parts issue no. 11 will fit the 77 GS-6 frames.

Penton Talk / Shock length?
August 03, 2006, 08:09:11 PM
Dave,

I just measured my 77 250 GS6 and came up with 13.5" on the rear Marzocchi shocks and 32.90" on the grey Marzocchi forks measured from the axle center to the top of the fork nut.
