Penton Talk / Early Frames & Engines
May 22, 2008, 11:53:00 AM
Thanks for the good advice guys.  You have helped me greatly in my decision.  I was considering reinforcing the frame and getting a thicker swing arm, but now, I am thinking that it may be a better decision to just restore it back as close to original as I can get it.

I recently read an article about restoring old bikes and it brought up a consideration that I had never thought of; that it may be best to leave the bike in "as is" condition.  That the wear and tear and degradation of the bike could be part of the historical significance of the bike.  I don't feel like my 68 Six day has any sort of significance that would put it in this category, but your thoughts have given me pause.

Thank You,

Penton Talk / Rusted rings removal-Help
April 14, 2008, 08:07:59 PM
I had the same problem with my 1968 Six Day; the piston rings were seized up in the cylinder.  I tried knocking it loose with a wooden block and a mallet.  I tried soaking it in kerosene.  I tried heating the cylinder and coolong the piston.  I was about to just take it to a machine shop to have it pressed or melted out.  However, a friend told me to try muriatic acid to eat the piston out.  It worked pretty good; just took awhile to get it done.  And you have to be super careful not to let the acid get into the engine casing.  It would eat a hole clean through it.  Of course, this is only advisable if you're going to have to replace the piston and have the cylinder bored anyway.  The acid will eat the aluminum, but will not harm the cylinder wall in the amount of time that it will be there.  Make sure that you keep some baking soda close by to deactivate the acid.  Make sure that you work in a well ventilated area.

Wanted / For Sale / Wanted: 1968 Six-Day Seat
February 28, 2008, 08:53:54 PM
I appreciate all of the help guys.  That's one of the great things about POG; everyone is so willing to offer help and advice.  My bike is frame number V716 and had the short seat on it.  Or I should say, the remnants of what used to be a short seat.

Thanks again!

Penton Talk / Bad News

"One man's trash is another man's treasure"

I came into ownership of my 68 Six-Day from a co-worker who wanted to get rid of it because he needed to clean out his barn.  He thought it was just another worn out dirtbike that was only good for the scrap heap.  It's sad to think of all of the vintage bikes that have ended up in junk yards and land fills because no one knew what they were.

Penton Talk / Penton play
April 05, 2007, 04:03:08 PM
I've been playing some with my 68 Penton Six-Day.  I won't say it has all been fun though.  The piston is seized in the cylinder, the main drive rotor seems to be seized as well.  When I drained the engine casing, the first substance that came out was about a quart of water followed by a greenish slime substance that used to be motor oil. I may just fill the engine case with marvel mystery oil and let it set while I restore the chassis.

I also have an 85 Kawasaki 250 Enduro that is in pieces.

Penton Talk / Early Frames & Engines

I have a 1968 Penton Six Day 125 and I am having a dilemma in my decision making process concerning how best to rebuild/restore the bike.  I know that the model is an example of an early MXer, but everytime I look at the bike sitting in my garage, I see a flat tracker.  I've even done some preliminary work in CAD refitting the bike as a flat tracker.  The frame would work perfectly, but naturally the 125 Sachs engine will not provide enough power.

My question is whether or not some of the larger Sachs or KTM engines (400 or 450cc) will fit this early frame without much refabrication.
