Penton Talk / Malcom Smith tank problem
June 19, 2008, 08:55:41 PM
Plastic tank.  Approximately 9/16 inch hole on petcock side, I am missing the threaded insert that was to be wire guided to the hole with an o ring inside the tank.  There are no mounting holes (as with a Clarke) on either side of the hole.

Do you know what day the XC will be?  I wouldn't miss it .  Do you have any idea who some of the legends will be?

Would that bike be considered a carbon offset for two stroke owners?

Is the book Jp is signing the John Penton and the off road revolution book or something new?  If it is, is it a second edition with more pictures, color, etc?  How do you get one?

Penton Talk / Mid-Ohio--what about enduro riders?
August 02, 2007, 08:36:40 PM
Ted has hit the nail on the head.  What we need on Vintage weekend is something that the average dirt rider can enjoy.  When I arrived at vintage days this year, I struck up a conversation with two guys who had just arrived, one with a 75 250 CZ enduro and one with an Ossa Pioneer.  They were unloading and starting up their bikes, and after I  talked with them for awhile, they started up and rode off.  To where, or to what, I wondered.  I realize that the staff and volunteers that weekend have all they can handle putting on the event, and they do a great job. That said, it would be great to have an event like Ted described, something that would attract riders and bikes common and uncommon.  Remember the old saying--if you build it, they will come.

Ted, do you know the name of the sponsoring club?  I don't think I can get away that weekend, but I'd like to contact them for information on location, rules, ect.

Penton Talk / Mid-Ohio--what about enduro riders?

I'm not saying it has to be a full on staged event with AHRMA points or AMA sanctions (I don't belong to either organization), or that it has to be racing machines either.  A guy with a DT Yamaha, or a SL Honda would be included as well, not just Pentons, Huskys, Ossa's, et al.  There has to be a viable option other than plonking around the swap meet.

Penton Talk / BMW acquires Husky
July 29, 2007, 08:46:24 PM
Hooray for BMW.  All of us husky freaks who were left high  and dry with few parts and plummeting resale values back in '88 wish nothing but bad luck to the Cagiva folks.  I had heard that Husqvarna AB had acqired a minority part of Cagiva group, and it would have been sweet justice if they would have bought majority stock, closed the Italian operation, and shipped everything back to Sweden.  I know that never would have happened, darn it.  They could have offered the Italian design staff the same deal they offered the Swedish engineers back in 1987--positions mowing the factory lawn.  You know, they guys who told them to stuff it and founded Husaberg. Having a Husky made in Italy is like having a Harley made in Taiwan--not the most desirable thing in the world.

Penton Talk / Mid OhioXC
July 27, 2008, 08:24:06 PM
Last year at this time, I complained that ther was nothing for enduro riders at Mid Ohio.  Well, I'd like to tip my hat to anyone that had anything to do with the cross country event this year.  Even though I couldn't ride the event, wandering through the woods watching the riders was the highlight of the weekend for me.  Seeing Speedy Clausen ride his  250 Sachs was a special highlight.  Big kudos to Chicago jerry for the course layout.  I didn't see all of it, but what I did was super.  Even though the expert race was good, I took special enjoyment watching the novices.  That's what riding is all about--riding for the pure enjoyment--no matter what the skill or equipment.

Penton Talk / Malcom Smith tank problem
June 18, 2008, 08:18:55 PM
Just bought a 4 gallon Malcom Smith off  Ebay and found the threaded insert for the petcock was missing.  It was the KTM/Husky 4 gallon  tank and I wonder if any of you would have a suggestion on how I could rig up an insert/petcock.  Those tanks were to use a stock Husky or KTM petcockbut as long as it works, I don't care.

Penton Talk / AMA Museum before VMD?
June 17, 2008, 10:48:18 PM
Does anyone know if the AMA Museum is planning to do anything special before VMD this year?  I know last year was really great with the Malcom Smith display and the get together with Malcom, Mert Lawill, Lackey, Tripes, etc.  I'm sure there won't be anything on that scale, but it would be nice to have at least a group of riders there outside signing autographs, bench racing, and the like. I hope they do something at the VMD XC race with all the legends there.

Penton Talk / XC at VMD 2008

Does anyone have any information on the status of an XC race/trailride at Mid Ohio this year?  There was conversation about it last fall when I complained that there was no outlet for enduro riders at VMD and I wonder if anything had come of it for this year.

Penton Talk / Dalesman/Wassell/Mudlark
March 30, 2008, 11:40:49 PM
I was thumbing through an old issue of Dirt Rider this weekend and I came across an article entitled "Living with a Dalesman".  This bike was a Sachs powered 125 trials bike that was a dead ringer for a Penton Trials.  In fact the article claimed that the Dalesman was a "second cousin" to the Wassel and the Mudlark.  Does anyone in the POG know anything more about this bike?  The author stated that he had #19 of the production run.  The article was in the May 1976 issue and gave a detailed account of the performance good and bad of the machine, but no details about the manufacturer, history, etc. of the bike.

Penton Talk / Michelin Knobbys
March 27, 2008, 08:54:54 PM
I have an opportunity to purchase a pair of Michelin M-12 knobbies at a good price. I've never used Michelins before but I remember a few years back KTM used them as OEM tires.  I'll just be using them for trail riding and would like to replace my existing tires with something long lasting and with good all around performance.  Would these tires be a good choice?  Thanks.  By the way, even if I don't have a Penton, I'll be in Amherst in September!

Penton Talk / KTM September Celebration

Has anyone any new information about the KTM celebration in September up in Amherst?  It sounded like a real great get together.
