Wanted / For Sale / 1977 Swing Arm / Marz fork leg
February 14, 2011, 09:25:45 AM
Here are before and after of swing arm bearing replacement. After the local "Fabricator" torched and mangled the bearing and nearly melted the orifice thru to the outer surface of one side. I brought it home and soaked in liquid wrench for a week and everything came out rather easy. The reason I took it to him in the first place was to remove bearing sleeve. Which was frozen to the bearings.
Here also is a photo of the Marz fork leg (without pinch bolts) that I am looking for.

Well, I actually saved the swing arm after torching out old needle bearings. Cleaned out area by Dremel sanding and new bearings pressed right in place. Bearing sleeve slid right in snug as a bug!

Big Mac, Appreciate photos of forks, unfortunatly they are not what I need. Already have a set 35's with pinch bolts on both legs. Looking for a leg without. Which originaly came on my '77 MC5.

Thanx Mike, I did see that one also. The problem I have with it is that there are no brackets for the upper chain rub block. Was hoping to avoid any chop, cut and rebuiding. Waiting for Larry to get back with what he has.
Big Mac, If the left slider (leg) is without pinch bolts, I am definitely interested. Can you e-mail me a photo and let me know where you would be shipping from?

Thanx, MG

Yes, This a West Coast bike. All the way from Alaska. Have original title with issue date of 9/78 to some guy stationed at Eielson Air Force Base. I assume some fly boy with a need for speed? Frame and engine #'s match title.
It was purchased from a dealer Called "THE TRICK SHOP" Fairbanks Alaska. According to the dealer decal on the tank.
Tooclose, KTM did have a small effort in open class with Jaak Van Velthoven in mid to late '70's. Malherbe Also went to open in '78 on KTM and stayed there for a couple of years before going to Honda.
Still looking for Bearing Cover. Anybody?

If you will notice I have the original '77 Marz 35mm forks in the bake ground on the bench. Which will stay with me and the bike. I have just been experimenting with these ,78 38mm for ride and handling according to my style and weight(250). I also have the original triples for this bike and a set with the sweepback bar mount in 35mm. As you can see on the bench. Looking for a Bearing cover complete (cluth actuator). Just missed out on a nice one in ebay last night. If any of you guys have one in excellent condition, would appreciate a line. The one on the bike now is fuctional, just broke on top from a misguided chain. I think one of last two previous owners had trouble here. I,ve ridden the machine quite often without any problems. Just would like to have a complete piece since everything else here is in nice shape.

A couple more shots from the 1979 Spanish 250 GP. They look pretty agressive to me!

Thanx baxter,
He was one of the toughest in the World 250. The Racer X photo is from the 1979 Spanish 250 Grand Prix, which is the series opener so to speak for the '79 season starting in April. Considering he just finished the '78 season with his 3rd World 250 Championship & the Motocross Des Nations (500cc) win with Russian Team comrades Kavinov, Korneev & Khoudyakov, I think he was pegged to do more damage in the World 250. They also finished a respectable 6th (out of 15 countries)in the Trophee Des Nations (250cc ) of '78, right behind the US team of Hannah, Sun, Staten, & Croft.
This Russian team of KTM riders went on to win the 1979 Trophee Des Nations while Kavinov and Moiseev finishing 3rd & 4th in the World 250 for '79.
So all in all these Russian racers and KTM made some impressive runs in the 1970's European motocross scene. Making KTM/PENTON motorcycles famous for reliability and championships.
For those of you who don't know this, the PENTON logo with the bike and rider is actually taken from a photo of Moiseev at the 1972 Swiss Grand Prix. Where he took a 3rd overall with a 6-1 placing in this final round for the year. Pavel Rulev & Moiseev finished 10th & 11th in the championship for the year with a mid season jump from CZ to KTM.
If any of you KTM/PENTON entusiasts are interested, I do have several posters for sale on ebay. They are of Moiseev and Kavinov at the 1977 British 250 GP at Hawkstone Park, Where they clinched the '77 World championship 1st & 2nd for the season. Andre Malherbe also on KTM took 3rd for the year. KTM with a 1 2 3 punch.  This popular photo shot has been used in sales brochures of the day and as reference for many articles on the team KTM Russian riders.

I just got to this today, been busy with my real job, kids, wife, life and the rest.
I have removed the tubes from the legs using prior recommondations, worked out rather well. Now I can order new seals and bushings from Al Buehner and reassemble then paint.
Britt if you can tell me what all this trickery on the caps and dampers does it would be greatly appriciated. If not maybe Mike Lenz might know wether this is KTM tech or some after market item from the 80's?

Thanx again guys, MG

Big Mac, Not familiar with the lug style plate stays? I have never seen them on Marz or KTM. Britt I will grab a couple of photo's today while I have these disassembled and get them on here. Went to my local K dealer and they never saw anything like it and guessed that it has something to do with adjusting rebound and compression? They also advised to remove the retaining clip with pointed scribe or punch tool, heat up leg area at seal with a propane torch and simply yank apart. Bushings will slap against seal and tube should pop right out with the seal.
Al Buehner Suggested same.

Thnx, MG

Hey Leo,
Those 76/77 MC5 250 parts were supposed to come to me. After you did say you would send them to me this past spring after I purchased the KTM from you last winter.
   How's about it?
